I would argue that you've never seen the best strikers competing in any MMA. For a BJJ trained fighter, Pride and UFC etc are excellent professional opportunities. For a really talented striker, this just isn't true. Why would anybody compete in any MMA event when they have the option of Million Dollar prize fights in Vegas?

For example, a young Royce Gracie might be able to tap out a 19 year old Mike Tyson 9 out of 10 times. Being hit with an uppercut from Tyson in bag gloves that 1 time would probably remove Gracie's head from his shoulders, however. :winkwink:

Royce Gracie has challenged Tyson to fight during his prime.

Never accepted.

His father chalenged the Brown Bomber, Louis, again, never accepted.

Have you ever watched any of the Gracie In Action Tapes or DVD's? Pretty interesting to see what happens to strikers. Hell UFC 1 to 5, LOL.

Might as well bring up Shilt's wins as the best in K1, who gets owned in MMA.

I'm just saying, the best boxers of their time never competed in UFC 1 to anything. There's no reason to compete risking more for a payday that's not even on the radar for them.

That was fun watching

More like, a lose/lose situation.

If there were any marketable heavyweights out there I'd bet they could get a big payday against a "name" MMA fighter. But I see your point, it's definetly a lose-lose as they will lose ... the match, a few teeth, etc. ;)

Seriously, a guy like Fedor strikes so fast I'd think he wouldn't be outclassed against a boxer in his weight class with pure boxing rules. Maybe I'm out to lunch but don't some of these guys work on sparring about as much as pro boxers?

What are your picks for tomorrow? So many great fights

MikeyFingaz 12-31-2005 12:28 PM

nice well informed posts by most i must say...

as far as who is the best fighters... that is a hard one to truly get to the bottom of... there are those who are in the top elite category... but it depends on whos' day it is more often than not when it comes to fighters this good... either can win, at anytime...

i for one have lost to guys that i should not have lost to... it happens... things like being overtrained too close to fight time can drain you on fight day...

ever watch a fighter who is known for his conditioning and stamina get winded early on into a fight?

things like the wrong foods at the wrong time, overtraining, dehydration, not getting the proper rest before a fight... they all can add up to having a very bad day in the cage/ring... so it can be anyones game when ya got two guys as good as most of the ones mentioned in this thread...

You also have to take into account the fact that boxing gloves changes EVERYTHING. You can't just parry and block punches all night long with MMA gloves, they're small and they punch right thru your high guard and you go to sleep a lot easier with the MMA gloves. Plus you can't bend at the waist to slip punches because you'll immediately eat a knee, and you can't clinch because you'll get taken down.

Boxing is very nearly a seperate science altogether from punching in MMA, as several pro boxers have already found out. A prime Mike Tyson is a potent offensive force no matter how big the gloves are, but his defense would be non-existent and if he gets taken down he's done, and he WOULD get taken down super super quick.

Boxing is more fun to watch, I'm a HUGE boxing fan, and the best boxers have an insanely high level of skill, handspeed and punching power, but it's a different skillset altogether from MMA style striking.

What about Matt Hughes? He hasn't even come close to losing in the last several years. Best MMA fighter hands down.
