Yeah, I could see them requiring NDAs because they might have existing clients that are currently paying way more than what they are about to offer you, and they don't want their current clients to know that they can get the same bandwidth for cheaper.

payrollpete 04-28-2002 10:31 PM

exactly

pimpshost 04-28-2002 10:41 PM

It is not a deal for everybody, therefore I cant publish the name of the provider. You'll probably figure out who it is when we launch the service. And, btw, no it is not Level 3, Verio, Global Crossing, or Exodus.

FATPad 04-28-2002 10:47 PM

Cogent's not dying.

You think Cicso pumped all that money into them and didn't realize there would a few year's delay in Cogent becoming a profitable company?

Cicso is not a stupid, and they are extremely well funded. They did not just jump into this whole Cogent business without knowing what to expect.

I'm a little confused. Your on one provider now, Cogent, and you have plans to bring in 2 more providers which you can not disclose because you claim both of them made you sign NDA's...

You say it is not level3 but yet you have a level3 button on your webpage?

bash

they use level3 as a backup, incase cogent ever goes down, his customers never do.

:)

Ok... Thanks. That makes more sense now... So, 100% of his network traffic is carried on Cogent... but he has a big old level3 pipe stashed away that carries no bandwidth because it is only there just incase Cogent goes down?

Yes

payrollpete 04-29-2002 12:26 AM

i think it carries pipe as well

just not as much

i can't remember, he was telling me about it a month or 2 ago

but it's all good

we have a box with him for traffic stuff, hasn't been down yet

payrollpete 04-29-2002 12:26 AM

another perk they offer is remote booters

so if your server ever locks up or goes down, you can just login to a web based panel and reboot your server by pressing a button

very nice

pimpshost 04-29-2002 12:46 AM

Level3 is used as backup and Cogent is primary. Suprisingly, Cogent has been one of the most reliable providers I have had.

VeriSexy 04-29-2002 12:47 AM

All the telecoms are dieing and they are not making any money. There are only about 3 that make money. They rest will die and get bought cheap buy Sprint, Worldcom and AT&T.

I really like what Cogent has done. Without companys like Cogent pricing would never have come down like this. It only benefits us. Just like what AMD has done to Intel. Without AMD we would all be paying tripple and still be at sub 1Ghz levels.

We need more companys like Cogent to pop up. You can bash Cogent all you want but they are not as bad as you think. Due is right, people have more problems with their servers and software than with Cogent.

If there are only a few companys left we will be paying the roof for bandwidth. They spent billions on equipment and need to make the money back. They will have more power to raise prices.

vidsweb 04-29-2002 01:04 AM

Yipes and Telseon do the same thing as Cogent, but nobody ever talks about them.

payrollpete 04-29-2002 01:11 AM

they probably don't have a big of network as cogent does :)

VeriSexy 04-29-2002 01:17 AM

Yipes is like $3000 for 10Mbps and Telseon I am not sure about. Yipes has far better peering than Cogent and from what I heard it's awesome but the prices are not even close to Cogent. Good to BGP them both though but you need 1000 IPs in order to apply for BGP and most carriers won't give you that many IPs unless you can prove usage.

Without knowing much about this situation.. From what's been presented in this thread, i'd have to go with Jason from cologroup. I'm hoping to get a server with you guys in a few months once i feel my site is in need of it's own server. (currently sharing a server with a friend on rackshack)

Good choice. Get a dedicated server now. Its worth it.

chodadog 04-29-2002 02:35 AM

I'd be inclined to agree. But right now, i don't need it. And i'm not a big fan of spending money unless i have to.

Pimpshost,

You are not in a position to provide any objective views on Cogent.

Previously someone mentioned people only talk about how cheap Cogent is, no one mentions any other positive features.

I wonder if there are any?

True, he is biased because he is somewhat dependent on Cogent, but his post was the best and most informative post in this whole thread. Why are you gettin all nasty towards him?

Nasty? Obviously you don't know what that word means ;-)

I said you're getting nasty because you accuse him of claiming he was making an objective opinion. Can you show me where he ever said his opinion was objective?

Read carefully.
He is not in a position to provide any objective views on Cogent as he uses them intensively himself.

Thank you for asking.

Pimpshost never said his view was objective. So why are you accusing him of it?

I know I'm bumping a really really old thread here, but I was searching for something else and came across this.

I find it hilarious how most of the "smart guys" in the hosting biz predicted that cogent would go out of business and bandwidth prices would go back up.

5 years later and cogent is still here and bandwidth is cheaper than it's ever been.

mattz 06-15-2007 04:21 PM

I'm guessing really cheap, I currently have 100mbps for 999 a month, so about 10 bucks per mbit

That's a pretty sick price, never seen one that low.

Who's it with? Managed or unmanaged? What are you paying for server rent etc?
