Correct. Neesh is proper english.

escorpio 12-04-2006 04:03 AM

I prounce it "nitch" like a good American, by gawd. Let them Europeans and fags say "neesh".

Why 12-04-2006 04:04 AM

here we go again. both annunciations are correct however...

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/niche

Dictionary.com declares only one way 'NITCH'
American Heritage and Merriam-Webster both claim both methods are acceptable. however MW, long considered the authority on the matter of the 3 above mentioned sources... claims that 'nEsh' or 'neesh' is a "sometimes" used alternative. thus making people using 'nEsh' the minority.

Logical reasoning would thus lead me to conclude(in a black/white world) that if only one party can be correct it would be those saying 'NITCH'! Based on the fact that they are the majority.

so ha, fucking ha ha ha you dirty Canadians, sucks to be out numbered.

Jace 12-04-2006 04:09 AM

holy crap, i am way too drunk

I just spelled it nitch

hahahahahahhaa

Neesh-a, I pronounce it with the last e. Before reading this thread it wouldn't have crossed my mind that someone would pronounce it "nitch". But then again I learnt most of my English from text books.

Wiggles 12-04-2006 04:57 AM

its neesh, americans fuck up every word it seems and claim they invented it.

harry discher 12-04-2006 05:11 AM

how bout neeshtch :1orglaugh

Jace 12-04-2006 05:14 AM

now that I am a little more sober I can say that I say it "nitch"

i try and say words like that exactly as I see them

kind of like Versailles....people say it "Verseye" because it is french, but we are in america, not france

honestly, if someone said "neesh" when I talked to them I would think there was something wrong with them

kind of like my buddy, he asked me once where a good place to find "war-ez" was.....i was like huh? OH, you meant "wears" (warez)

REßEL 12-04-2006 07:23 AM

I guess all you ignoramuses would

call quiche - quitch

1: it's french.
2: it has an e on the end which softens the ch.

The friggin American dictionaries are just trying to justify butchering yet another word by telling you it's ok to say it nitch. If it was nich then yes, then you'd be right. But you're not, get over it. All you do is prove you're just another stupid ignorant american when you pronounce it nitch. It does you no favours.

Jesus, now you're calling the people who write American dictionaries idiots because they don't agree with you.

And we wonder why Americans think Europeans are snotty little pricks.

I don't want to hear his answer to this one. Which brings up another word I would hate to hear him say .... "ans - wer" .....

it's neesh for the love of all that is unholy!!!

munki 12-04-2006 07:55 AM

I'm stubbornly sticking with Nicky... despite all of your great evidences

might as well, at least noone is arguing with you about it :)

volante 12-04-2006 08:00 AM

I remember the first time I heard a Californian say "croissant". I wondered what the hell they were talking about :)

Barefootsies 12-04-2006 08:23 AM

It depends on, if you are French, and say it in between your wee-wee's with your pinky in the air.

:winkwink:

SCORE Ralph 12-04-2006 08:37 AM

considering Im in the U.S. Im going to say we use "niche". Id use "neesh" if I was in the UK.

SCORE Ralph 12-04-2006 08:42 AM

correction: niche as in "nitch".

alexg 12-04-2006 08:52 AM

neesh is probably more correct... since it sounds like a word that came from french...

I am one of *they* but I never got saying 'We will use the word from another language but screw pronouncing it correctly' thing. If you are going to say it differently than make up your own word.

s9ann0 12-04-2006 09:32 AM

stupid people say nitch and for non-stupid people its neesh

rogueteens 12-04-2006 09:34 AM

neesh obviously :)

I did mean they as in those that pronounce it nitch, and argue that it's not french anymore ;)

I also accept that those saying nitch may not be ignorant and stupid. But first impessions count. And anyone that says nitch to me will automatically give the impression of being ignorant and/or uneducated.

reynold 12-04-2006 09:41 AM

It should be pronounced as "NITCH"

Ah, I thought they was American..fair enough.

Nitch makes me cringe much like those people back home that say "ruff" for "roof".

cosis 12-04-2006 09:45 AM

"NITCH" - I've only heard Canadians say "NEESH"

Manowar 12-04-2006 09:47 AM

neesh...

Magalie 12-04-2006 09:59 AM

Well...considering its a french word, it should be Neesh. There are many french words used in english, we don't change the pronunciation !

But both are accepted it seems.

E$_manager 12-04-2006 10:04 AM

Neesh. :1orglaugh (eyes half closed)

Webby 12-04-2006 10:09 AM

Is this thread still going on? Jeez... it's not a debate on "opinions" - learn how to pronounce words or get back to school :winkwink:
