You seem to be implying that islamism and nationalism in Turkey are somehow linked.

In fact, however, modern-day Turkey was founded upon a combination of nationalism and secularism. The military, which has long held an exceedingly important political position in Turkey, has always tried to defend these two things - often by questionable means. Only recently, Turkey has become more democratic, which has ironically increased the power of Turkish Islamists. Many Turkish nationalists, including the military, still vehemently oppose the Islamisation of the state. And make no mistake about it - the Turkish nationalist/secular faction is quite radical in its rejection of Islamism. For example, to this day, women are banned from wearing headscarves as a symbol of Islam in public office and in universities.

Just recently, the Dutch Queen visited Turkey, and extended an invitation for a concert to the (secular/nationalist) Turkish president. He declined, most likely because there would be women wearing headscarves attending the event as well - like the (islamist) prime minister's wife.

These are hardcore views and ideologies that is threatening to engulf Turkey into deeper extreemism. Yes, there are some radical nationalists who plan to take over the world. There are many more who would like to do so, but realize that it's not going to happen. Most of those, however, do intend to keep Turkey a strongly nationalist state, and will gladly imprison, kill or torture those who attack (their idea of) Turkey.

Likewise, there are some radical Islamists in Turkey, who plan to turn it into a purely Islamic state. There are many more who will settle for as much Islamism as they can get. Some of those are non-nationalist Turkish Islamists, some are nationalist Turks as well as Islamists.

While the law you are referring to is relatively new, Turkish nationalism is not. Likewise, the case of Hrant Dink is clearly not isolated. Just look at the many human rights activists who have been threatened, imprisoned and even murdered for (peacefully) raising the issue of Kurdish rights.

The point I am making is that Turkey is not moving in a single, clear way. There are several factions within Turkey with radically different and incompatible goals, and just lumping them all together is deeply misleading at best.

This penal code is not new, it basically replaced the old code, 159 with more restrictions and was signed by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer on 1 June, 2005.
It, basically will put you in jail if you insult Turkey, Turkishness (a word invented by nationalists) or insult Turkey's founder, Ataturk.

The whole secular thing is just a front, a front for EU, so Europeans can see how Turkey has changed, but it is all on the surface. Maybe Istambul is secular and liberal, but most of the country is brainwashed by nationalistic ideas, like "Pan-Turanism". The whole legal system is very biased and prohibits any anti-Turkish ideas.

Actually the EU influence may have a good, calming effect on the country. Getting them out of Northern Cyprus as a power would also be a desireable (if unlikely) effect.

Looking at the Turks I have seen in Scandinavia, they overall make pretty good migrants. They usually work hard and integrate a lot better than some nationalities.

I think EU membership for Turley is desireable for a lot of people, as it would have effects on the balance of power in that part of the world.
