I own a beautiful 4-bedroom brick Victorian... the only thing that sucks is that it's 150 years old (no insulation) and has a dirt floor in the basement...

Herb Kornfield 03-25-2007 04:58 PM

2nd house that I have owned.

Totally worth the investment :)

themonk 03-25-2007 05:01 PM

renting ...

Can't you pour some concrete over the dirt floor? It's not that expensive to do.

As you get older you start downsizing. My current house is almost 1/2 the size of my last one. SO much easier to take care of (not that I do, lol).

heres some pics of my house right while i was moving in, i finished a lot of stuff since there but its almost done. i did 75% of the work myself and redid pretty much everything in the house.

edit: and heres the outside, i got all the bushes tore out and put in landscaping blocks since then though.

I'm a renter for 2 reasons:

1. I always move; I don't know where I'll be in 3 months. I have yet to spend more than 18months in the same house.

2. Real estate in Japan loses value over time, it doesn't appreciate. So if I buy a $400k condo, in 10 years it's likely it'll be worth $200k... if I'm lucky.

stickyfingerz 03-25-2007 06:46 PM

Own for over 2 years now. Love my house. :thumbsup

Renting, I'm 18 and haven't got enough money saved up for a down-payment.

LittleSassy 03-25-2007 08:23 PM

renting at the moment....i keep moving out, and havent decided where i will settle,.

sniperwolf 03-25-2007 08:28 PM

i live with my parents, brother and my child and we own our house..

Nodtveidt 03-25-2007 08:32 PM

Sorta both. At the moment, my wife and I are renting the house we picked up a couple of months ago, but under the premise that we'd buy it in six months, which we plan to do. It's a quaint little 3 bedroom house in the suburbs of Isabela, PR with a small 1 bedroom apartment attached to it, which we rented out for four months. I have a picture of it on my cellphone but I haven't taken any with my digital yet; we're still doing lots of work to the place. We eventually plan on buying up cheap properties in Isabela and Camuy, fixing them up, then reselling for 2x-3x the original buying price.

Rochard 03-25-2007 08:59 PM

I own my own house......

Everyone always told me I needed to buy a house instead of renting and I never understood why. Now I do. When you suddenly discover your house is worth twice what you owe on it, well, it's party time.

GAMEFINEST 03-25-2007 09:04 PM

"We" meaning your parents. Correct?

MediumPimpin 03-25-2007 09:11 PM

I own a few :)

rowan 03-25-2007 10:28 PM

We were looking to buy about 3 years ago and ended up building instead. By paying about 20% more than the existing places we looked at we were able to get a larger house with exactly what we wanted.

The cycle will start over shortly, we've purchased a larger block and will be building a house roughly twice the size of our existing one. I can't say that all of the "appreciation work" that has happened with this house will be for nothing, because it gets us a leg up, but once we move we'll be back to square one as if it was our first home, first mortgage payment......

topbucksdarlene 03-25-2007 11:14 PM

I own! 4 years now. I hated renting!

calibra 03-25-2007 11:17 PM

I rent an apartment.

Glad I done it tho. Better than pissing my money up against a wall.

Like 10 years ago my parents bought a small cottage in a suburban beach area (30 mins away from town). Now that piece of land costs around $200k. I've demolished pretty much everything there was there and now am building a big house from scratch. And to believe they've bought it for $4k or something, damn.

The house itself is on a small hill which used to be the shore of a river. Now the lake is something around 200m away from the hill which results in an amazing view. Just incredible.

It will be funny though if the river comes back to the hill where I'm currently setting up a sauna-house.

Some Guy 03-26-2007 12:55 AM

I'm an owner and love it. I can't get enough of my pool and jacuzzi.

:)

Renting does have its advantages, though. Like getting shit fixed for free.

SleazyDream 03-26-2007 01:20 AM

i'd like to say owner but the bank technically owns most of it when i think about it.

That was actually something I ment to say in my original post.. I don't consider owning anything until *I* own it.

Until something is fully paid, you don't own it. :)

Gabriel Night 03-26-2007 02:20 AM

i buy a flat inside the middle of the city of Budapest.

I'm selling early next year too. Want something bigger and another investment. Gonna buy a new build house. Its the best way to make instant profit over here as they sell them at the lowest possble price. 1 year later you sell it for minimum of 20% more.

Hahah. Cool :)

We went to a place in British Columbia called "Old Country Market" where they have a bunch of buildings and there's grass growing on the roofs and goats walk around all day munching away at the roofs. Neat little shops and a cool place also!

in my area builder sells them for the same price (or even higher) as used houses go for :/ (caz there's not much land left here)... but ya, i got my first house, in one year it appreciated 30k (sold it), moved into the second one and already see people sell exact same house on my street for 50k more... once i pay it off I want to get another one... I was also thinking once I pay it off, to sell it and to buy something smaller, and with money left to buy a condo closer to the city, not sure what Im ganna do

NaughtyAce 03-26-2007 10:38 AM

I'm a home owner as well. Bought my condo when I was 23 in December. Have money on another one that will be built by the end of 2008, early 2009. A nice high rise in downtown San Diego.

shoeaholicanon 03-26-2007 10:40 AM

Ben.Z 03-26-2007 11:50 AM

Homeowner here.:thumbsup

pornguy 03-26-2007 11:53 AM

we are renting. We have to have CASH to build, so we are saving the money. Looking at 35K just from start to foundation.

then it gets expensive.

Sharky 03-26-2007 02:06 PM

I'm currently renting.
I sold my house of 7 years last year. I'm not sure if I am going to move north or stay in Florida, so I'll be renting for at least a year.

My house was a good investment. Sold for exactly twice what I bought it for originally;-)

zibril 03-26-2007 02:42 PM

ChopperBoy 03-26-2007 02:44 PM
