Post the e-mail/letter that was sent to you. There is no crime in that (in fact there is no crime in anything you've done).

i think that you, more than anyone has the unique talent to rally support. don't let anyone influence your decision where you alone will pay the price or bear the burdens, but remember that you won't be alone either... and plenty of people will stand behind you.

That is some majorly shady shit, and I would be inclined to think far worse of someone for pressuring you in these circumstances than for anything you said in the first place. One more circumstance of "damage control" causing more damage than what was to be controlled in the first place.
