I am going to have to respectfully disagree however, about 16x9 SD being any kind of better option for web content unless you are just talking about the producer's convenience factor. If one actually takes the time to skillfully light the set of either an hdv or HD shoot really well, the apparent detail that remains in the finished encoded files (like a high bitrate wmv or qt file) is much nicer than SD. Details like the texture of the models hair and eyes really "pop" and if you have some depth in the shot between the foreground and background there is much more of a 3D effect to the image even when viewed on a standard CRT or LCD monitor like most surfers use.

Right Jim .. Muy argument isn't about the quality byt more about the final product .. I ve seen too many programs have horrible Bite rates for HD content ... Hense why my suggestion to go SD 16:9 .. . i remember a conversation early on with a progam owner, when they're first HD clip was ready and they needed to buy the codec to just to watch the clip I cut ... The codec was 300$ .. this was outragious to them and quickly changed they're mind about going HD .. of course today you no longer need special codecs to cut or view HD work.

HD is here to stay - embrace it. It's not a buzz word or a gimmick and ignoring it will only cause undue headaches in trying to play catch-up with technology in the very near future. Owners must realize the added expense incurred by producers in creating and distributing the content, and I think this is where Vid's concern lies.

He wants to get in bed with HD, but it's difficult when clients want the increased quality without paying more. You don't get to drive a Ferrari for the price of a Hyundai.

damn vid, your one of the few people in this biz that actually understands HD and shit.

i really don't understand why they are forcing it on the public, some internet routes are already very loaded, to add that much more bandwidth is going to be a huge problem IMHO.

So very true ! . most people thing of HD as a new technology ...it's not .. I was learning HD when I was in Broadcast school back in 89-90 ... at that time the only HD in use was for Baseball in Japan. a few years later around 91, the skydome got delivery of the first HD Close curcuit television in Canada .. I think it was some where around 96 or 97 when SOny Canada transmitted the first HD signal form Ottawa to Toronto .. it's was just digital bit stream at the time and the BVW 700 had just come out, quickly followed by the BVW900 24p the first hd camera to take Prime lenses and the camera that was used for the last three Star Wars movies...

Awesome thread Vid !!!

if HD or HDV is the new formats for video, higher quality i guess.

What woul dbe the equivalant for photography? if there is one

Just as in video, you would use a D-slr with a higher Mega Pixel rating.. For example the nikon's D200 or D80 .. with a Optical stabilizer lens .. this will give more defention to the image and in turn give a feeling of High def. Even those webusers only see a 72 dpi image. the compressed image will have more info in it because the original image was in 10 or higher Mega pixels

compare an Image from a D100 to that of a D200 with a better lens and you
ll see exactly what I mean

glad to have been helpful Eli :)

When broadcast starts accepting TS movies, I will start shooting in HD. There is ONE outlet as of now, but until there are more, not worth it for me. :-(

great thread, vidvicious. i'm bookmarking it to re-read later.

Are you talking about those type of cameras?

Excellent and very informative thread Vid!

Unfortunately, as it's been touched on in this thread, I think that we're dealing with the paradox of progress!

Umm not exactly .. I mean yes those are HDCams ..look like 900's how ever those cameras run roughly about 80 000 to 120 000 depending on where in the world you are. Not exactly your average Porn use camera.

but your on the right track ... keep on it :thumbsup

i thought I'd bring this thread back to life .. this is a serious issue and the changes will happen faster then you think ..

anyone have any experience with Canon HD or HDNV products .. I'm looking for a canon camera that can shoot 16:9 SD as well as HDV.. and if it can do HD on HHD that would be awesom .. I'm pretty sure that the Canon 1H can do all that, but I've haven't had the oppertunity to find a rental one to test it .. anyone have experience with it ?

HS-Trixxxia 10-02-2007 04:48 PM

Vid - that's a lot - this is a fantastic thread topic and I learned a lot from it.

rock-reed 11-05-2007 02:15 AM

Good thread.
I've been shooting in HDV since December of 2004.

I've been telling alot of people to start shooting in HD/hdv asap...

Bottom line is that surfers will want better quality videos.
More res, more bit rate.

sweetpurple04 11-05-2007 05:29 AM

My computer is crying every time I work with HD files. Great thread. I am shooting in only HD now. I just keep the stuff on tons of hard drives and deal with it. I do this to prepare for the future.

Get an JVC HD200... all problems solved, from shooting Concerts on the jumbotron to filming Miami CSI.

Body $10,000 +/- $100
Lens $7,000 +/1 $100

Have 1, it's nice piece of work.

HVX200 PIECE OF CRAP, soft images. Have 1, it's a "throw away camera"

100DVX? pffft hahahaha.

Lotta "big players" here :lol

No adult site needs "real" hd, simply put, it's a great marketing scam, but at TRUE 1080i, NO ONES monitor is large enough to even watch it in HD.
720p is "HD" in a sense, but by the time it is compressed and watchable on the internet, it has knocked its resolution so far below 720p, it's actualy on the lines of SD.

Your pixel resolution would have to be 2300X4200 just to see half of the image.

1080i doesn't mean 1080 pixels as in a computer screen, at least I hope you don't think that...

Argue with me so I can put you to shame.... please...

What kind of moron stacks the Endura 7s?

Real HD comes to its best performance when the 180dv is rendered in SKS6700, best playable when the ternobyte particles are diffused in SX T-50 instead of the SS100.

bronco67 11-05-2007 08:05 AM

I can definitely say that working with HD is a pain in the ass. I'm a 3D animator, and just as computers have become fast enough to rip through 720 by 480, now HD comes along.

When I get an HD job, I can't really chrage that much more, but the rendering time is tripled, or quadrupled in some cases....file sizes are way bigger. Now the computer is back to 1999 standards. Unless the CPUs make a HUGE jump in the next couple of years, HD can kiss my black ass.

Could you post your system specs for a curious type? Mac/Intel/AMD, etc?
