A perfect example is CSI. A fairly smart show, it has always been top 10 material. However, when Grey's Anatomy moved into the same timeslot last season, ratings dropped. People prefered the almost mental soap opera to the procedural drama of CSI. The reply? CSI started a huge story arc about a personal relationship between two of the members of the cast and spun it hard as hell, pure soap. The end result? Ratings to start this season are above those of Grey's.

People prefered the soapy aspects of the show over the intelligent parts of the show, apparently.

You will never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public. The networks know it.

Calling CSI intelligent? Please. When they start up the funky rock music to make forensics seem interesting and cool, you know you're in for a long ride. I would call the original Law & Order intelligent and interesting and challenging with great story arcs and solid episodes. But CSI is just pretty people getting killed. The viewer doesn't even get to guess at the crime because often they show the killer in the first minutes of the show!

Angie77 10-10-2007 09:36 AM

I'm really tired of reality shows.

Bryan G 10-10-2007 09:58 AM

The Office-UK version
only lasted two seasons, by far the funniest show Ive ever seen!

TV continues to head down the shitter. Probably replace Journeyman with another fucking reality show.

Ok, there are lots of dumb shows for the masses...I'll give you that. You're right, those shows are great and should have survived...BUT

TV is better than ever. As well as having some real shit to deal with on TV(some of which I enjoy) there way too many really good shows to keep track of. I can't remember a time when there was so much scripted TV programming that rivaled a good movie. My DVR works overtime.

Lately when I hear a show is really good, I just ignore because I can't add anything else to my TV watching schedule. I'd love to watch Friday Night Lights, but I just can't fit another show in.

Current favorites are:

Lost (last season finale was just fucking amazing)

24 (has slipped in the last season, but it's overall awesomeness can't be disputed)

Brotherhood

Dexter

Weeds (has really grown on me...pun not intended)

The Shield

House

The Office

Battlestar Galactica (the best show nobody knows about)

Some great ones I miss:

Rome

Freaks and geeks

Firefly

Compared with Survivor or Deal or No Deal, CSI is fucking Einstein work. It actually requires people to pay attention for more than 10 seconds, which is beyond most stuff out there. If you drew a line with "get me out of here I am a celebrity" at one end and 'law and order" at the other, CSI would be almost on top of L&O.

Why would something like Grey's Anatomy be more popular?

It's not like that at all. I spent 4 yrs in TV advertising.

Ad agencies don't give a shit what the show is. The only things that matter are GRP's (gross Rating Points) and CPR (cost per rating)

These shows are getting cancelled because the cost of production is greater than the ad revenue.

Let's talk ratings for a second. You can't compare ratings of CSI to Grey's unless you are looking at demos.

(it's been a few years since I pulled numbers)

On the Adults 25-54 demo, yes CSI does better

But...

on the W 25-54 demo Grey's does better and on W 18-34 it blows CSI out of the water

Many major advertisers target Women over everyone else because they have more purchasing power.

Varius 10-10-2007 11:37 AM

Luckily what i currently watch hasn't been cancelled yet:

House
Dexter
Californication
Burn Notice
Adult Swim

Point taken. But saying CSI is more challenging/interesting/intellectual than L&O is still inaccurate.

Regarding the soap aspect of things, nobody mentioned NYPD Blue or ER? I loved the first few seasons of ER. I can't believe it's still going.

There's more to it than just gross ratings point though, there are also demographic factors to consider.

For instance The West Wing wasn't as highly rated as alot of other shows, but the top demographic for that show was people who made over 80K per year. That's a coveted demographic.

Same thing with CNBC, their ratings aren't that high, but the ads are expensive, because it's such a targeted and affluent audience. :2 cents:

On Rome, it was never meant to be more then one season. They only made the second season because of how well the first one did and the out cry from fans. There really isn't much more to tell in that story line.

Actually there's alot more to Roman history than what was shown on that show....BUT, they would need a new cast literally every year (if not more often) because you couldn't have Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus living through 300 years of Roman history.

Maybe they figured the cast/characters were a bigger part of the draw than the storyline?

Thomas N 10-10-2007 01:41 PM

First thing I said when i saw a preview for Journeyman is that it looked great and would never make it half a season. I no longer bother trying, all the intriguing shows are doomed to cancellation within 12 episodes.

Nismo 10-10-2007 01:44 PM

The only show that I can't miss these days is "its always sunny in Philadelphia". Those guys are comedic geniuses.

Thats not even the worst part of CSI. Well, the worst part is the acting. Especially CSI New York, I've never seen worse acting anywhere. But besides that, it is so unrealistic it is just unintentional comedy. At every hostage scene, theres a full swat team ready to storm the building, but they hang back a little and let the CSI LAB TECH lead the assault! hahaha yea right. And the CSI lab techs are all fluent skydivers, deep sea divers, able to rapel the statue of liberty, etc etc... its so absurd its actually funny.

So true :) And everyone on the show is so unbelievably beautiful with soft hair lights on everywhere, it's distracting! I mean, I know Miami is a pretty place with pretty people, but even the scientists and cops are model material? Come on! Gimme Lenny Brisco or Adam Schiff any day :)

The target audience is part of the calculation of your rating point.

Every station prices each show on the demo that perfoms the best.

Well they said nothing is final yet.

Would suck though, tonight's episode was the best one yet.

Also sucks that they don't care about DVR viewers or online viewers. If they're gonna be like that they shouldn't offer the show for free online, then people would find a way to watch it on TV.

Heroes really sucked this year up until about 2 episodes ago...then it seemed like the story line finally got traction.

What's pissing me off though is that they're saying there's only 2 episodes left. That would be a grand total of 11 episodes.
That's what they're calling a season now?

I thought that Lost was giving us the shaft by only having 18 episodes, but that's generous compared to Heroes apparently.

Look at the size of the trailer parks on the fringes of most large N American cities.

There's your answer.

Wife swap? Give me a fucking break. That survives, yet so many actually great series get cancelled after a handful of episodes.

As with everything in life, mindless idiots are the ones empowered as the decision makers. :disgust

Yeah that was the best show of all time IMO.

They even had some suprisingly good episodes/storylines after Sorkin left....although Sorkin's writing was still the best.

They could have milked that show for a few more seasons with Jimmy Smits and Alan Alda as the new principle characters.

Oh well.
