she is a gorgeous little girl, congratulations! Mandy, our client service director, rescued a german 2 months ago and named her Faith. it has been a labor of love to bring her out of her shell and get her over her anxiety after being abused. there is a long way to go but it will happen for both Faith and Coty. my neighbor also just rescued a dog from death row at the pound and Sadie is the most adorable, scruffy looking thing you ever saw. she is the sweetest, most loving dog and i can't imagine why someone abused her (she arrived at the pound very badly beaten and all bloody) and dumped her off or why no one wanted to rescue her at the pound. i get to keep her at my house when my neighbor is at work and i just love her. good luck with Coty and remain patient, changes will still be occuring for up to 2 years with her. you did a wonderful thing taking her home :thumbsup

Coty has shown NO aggression to me, hasn't bit me once and I have tested the waters, she is very very scared of water though, so I haven't literally tested the waters haha, anyway when I turn on the hose she bails, so in about a week I am going to try to bath her and that is where, I guess, I will see if she bites. I WILL NOT HANDLE BITING. That is a no no and I will be aggressive towards her if she does. That is the one thing I will never tolerate from a dog is to bite me. My Daddy raised me that way and I firmly believe it. I wasn't there when she bite the girl so I couldn't really do anything about it, you know I am sure, to discipline a dog a while after the incident won't do any good. I took the girls word that Coty bit her because she was scared not because she was trying to kick her ass or anything. Coty didn't bit her until the girl put the water on her, up to that point she was very nice to the girl and even gave her kisses. Coty has doggie training school on Thursday so I am going to probably learn as much as I can about her actions from him. The trainer is one of the number one trainers on the west coast for German Shepard?s and has worked with abused dogs as well. I am a positive reinforcement training person so I will not tolerate negative training, that is old school and we have learned a lot by watching wolves in packs how to truly train a dog and it is not by beating or being negative. You want to get the dog to want to do good by tuning into the dog's instincts. I will for sure let you guys know what happens and how she grows. I hope she was never abused, but I can't rule it out either. |

When I massage her, her muscles are very little and very loose, they are not tight or big/full like they should be so I am sure with daily exercise and the right food and added ingredients she will get her muscles and body into the shape it should be. :) I just picked up a large bag of Royal Canine for German Shepard?s. I will see how that works for her. It is soft and she hasn't eaten it yet so I am sure with some beef boullion on it that will help. |
Awe.. that's a cute dog!! I had one years ago.. but she died when I was 11.. :(.

Re: excercise
Once you've walked her over the course of a few months and she's getting her muscle tone and her cardio health back, one thing that really got my dog in shape (when he was the age Coty is) was to take him into a park, get on my mountain bike, and have him chase me around the trails. You can slowly ride faster and faster, and over time your dog will get in superior shape. In fact it eventually became hard for me to keep ahead of my dog back then, and he became known as the fastest pooch in the nieghborhood. It was funny when one day after years of doing this with him we were up at a cabin and a bigger meaner dog started chasing him. All Sully did was play with that dog by running around the cabin... there was zero chance that dog could catch him, he was that fast. When I get my next dog (and I will at some point) I'm definitely going to run it with the mountain bike once it gets big enough to do that. |
loryn, i adopted 2 dogs back in November a 3 yo Dachshunds (also known as the wiener dog) and an 8 months old schnauzer . I named then Sa-Chi and T-mi. They r my life :)

Coty doesn't feel like this is her house yet, but if she only knew how much this house has changed all for her, even me. It's only been 48 hours and every minute of every day she is there with me. We went for a car ride today, because I had a doctor’s appointment and I didn't want to leave her in the house or backyard by herself. I brought her into the doctor’s office, she had to stay in the waiting room but she loved everyone and wasn't shyin' away at all. So she is growing already. I could see it in her little eyes when she walked around the room, she had the, "Yes I know I am beautiful and everyone loves me" look. I was a proud Mama. It was funny too, well not funny GREAT, no one believed that I had only had her for two days. When I went back to talk to the Doc they said she had a constant look of worry or wonder of where I was. That made me so happy, sad, but happy. I don't want her to add to her worry list like that but I guess after everything she has been through and then having someone who loves her like I do she is going to feel that way. Nothing I can do about that. I weighed her today and she weighs 65.7 pounds and I can feel her bones (ribs and spine) and lose muscles etc... so hopefully she will put on about 10 pounds with the good food and lots of exercise, which I think would be a great weight for her frame. Her frame is pretty big for a female Shepard, IMO. Thank you Mr. Smith again! I’m going to Craigslist to look for a bike. I really don't have the money for a bike but I gotta do what I gotta do. She needs it and it will be good for me too! |

Those names are great, and it's good to know that there are others out there adopting dogs like Coty. I don't think I will ever get a young puppy again, unless of course it is abused or abandon. After Coty I just understand even more than I ever did before just how important it is to do this. I am not saying in anyway that if someone goes out and gets a puppy from a breeder that it's bad, not at all it's great. It's just this is now me. I have saved so many animals in my life, including dogs, but only kept one, a kitty. Rescuing a dog like this is one of the best thing I have ever felt. |

I wish I could do that with Coty but she doesn't look fast enough. Maybe after she gains some muscle strength she will surprise me, plus the bike rides! |
once you know she is ok take her to the dog park maybe the first time leaver her on a leash and walk around the park if she fine take her in. both of those pics were taken at he dog park they love it they get to play with other dogs and just run and run. both of them now run out to the car anytime the garage gets open because they want to go to the park and they have their special dog friends there too

Congrats on the adoption! We got one of our family's Lhasa Apsos from the pound many moons ago. Like your baby, her old owner seemed to have beat/kicked her, and she is VERY scared of feet to this day.
However, she's about 16 years old now and still loving life! Enjoy your new baby and always remember to treat her like a queen! :thumbsup http://a941.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...13c2478e64.jpg Our 16 year old Lhasa Apso http://a690.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...300fb18711.jpg Her with our lil' 3 year old. :thumbsup |
Could you post some pics of the dog's asshole and genitals? If the price is right then I might be interested in hiring your dog for a day or half day, she is a fine looking animal...

Good for you Loryn. My wife and I recently saw a show on Oprah about puppy mills. It was heartbreaking. We ending up donating to a bunch of the rescue organizations that were mentioned on the show.
We will only be adopting dogs in the future. No more pet stores or random breeders. |

Joe eventually quit and went to lay down for a snooze, all tuckered out. Sully took a walk with us down to the lake. lol Btw I hear you on the bad back and the no running thing. With my back I can't run for shit either, just short spurts and that's it.... certainly nothing that would give a good-sized dog any workout. I used to have my first dog (25 years ago) chase me while I rode my motorcycle around the bay, and he got so fast it was scary, from that. So the mountain bike thing just seemed to be the way to go with Sully and sure enough, he took to it and used to go crazy with excitement whenever I'd take the bike out with us. Quote:

And thank YOU. I'm still getting over the passing of my dog and am not yet ready to get another one (although the urge is there), so I'm living a bit vicariously through you right now. :thumbsup |

I hope you get a new dog soon. I read a book a few months ago called Rescuing Sprite. It was a great book, read it in one day about a man who didn't want to get another dog after his dog passed away. They had a dog named Pepsi already and he didn't think Pepsi would like a new dog and adjust fast since his other dog had just passed. His wife ended up going out and getting a dog his kids ended up calling Sprite. He kept saying he wasn't ready but once he got Sprite in the house it was all over. He ended up having to put Sprite dog from old age later on and of course I balled reading what he went through that day, but he soon went out and got another dog again because of what Sprite taught him. The whole point of the book was showing how much an older rescue dog can change your life and your thoughts. How much they brighten your life etc? you know how it is. There are so many of them out there ready to bring brightness and love to you. Of course you can live vicariously through Coty and I for as long as you like! :thumbsup |

Oh I can't even think about puppy mills I will lose sleep and cry. I seriously have done it before. I can't handle it. I signed up on the Best Friends Animal Society website, they got a bunch of Michael *asshole* Vicks dogs, and I am a volunteer for anything they need me for and my first request was editing videos for YouTube about Puppy Mills. I of course couldn't do it but I got a friend to do it for me/them. I can't watch that stuff because I will get in my truck right now and go take care of each one and I know I can't do that because it won't help. It will just put me in jail and away from Coty, my animals, and life. What good am I behind bars? But I helped in the best way I could by helping the videos get out which helped spread the word. :thumbsup If anyone wants to sign up on the website I linked it to the words above. Fill out the forms and check out all the little things you can do to help. There is so much you can do during your spare time, from data entry, mailing stuff out, editing videos, I can't even begin to mention all the duties they need help with. Check it out! It is really worth it and it does really help them. They take animals from all over the country. I plan on physically going to the ranch this summer and volunteering to clean animals and houses etc... It's in Utah about 2 hours from where I use to live and about 4 hours from Vegas. It is fun and they have a message board. You can sign your pets up and talk with other pet owners with your same pet. Share photos and stories. It's a lot like a MySpace for your pet but it's an animal shelter, that helps a lot of abused animals. I haven't put Coty up yet. I just signed her up to Home Again and took care of her training school. Anyway, if you are an animal lover, like me, check out the site. You will thank me later, I promise! :winkwink: |

I didn't know you lived in Vegas. We should get together sometime for some drinks or whatever! Maybe Coty can play with your babies. She is really good with other dogs. I can't treat Coty any other way than a Queen because that is what she is, a Queen! :thumbsup |
I miss my german shephard. The ex-wife has her, I get to see her when I drop my kid off but its not the same as having her here all the time.
She is very well trained, knows all the german commands and has an awesome personality. Looks alot like yours but much darker. |

I know it was 6 months ago but it was like losing a son for me, and taking him in for his final needles was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Of course non dog lovers simply won't get that but that's pretty much their tough shit. One day I'll be ready and I'll go pick out another dog. |

Yup..I'm born and raised in Vegas! I'd def want to get the dogs together but our old lil girl is pretty grumpy with others and if I separate Kahlua from Pudgie, she gets bad separation anxiety! Are you new to Vegas? I'm one of the few natives and I doubt I'll ever leave! If you ever want to get together for drinks or whatever, drop me a line! There are several of us Vegas people and it's always fun when we get together. :thumbsup |
She is beautiful..... and bravo to you for rescuing her. I rescue dogs too and they make some of the best pets I've ever had. Where I live, people dump them off so often. Especially if they have babies, it's so sad.
A few months ago, someone dumped off a Lab and her two babies, she was all but dead but she was taking such good care of her babies that they were fat and healthy. She was a good mom, she all but died taking care of them. |

My newest problem with Coty is her paws. I noticed she walked funny when we went for a walk and I assumed it was all due to her just being out of shape and not fed well, but I noticed her paw pads hurt her. So I think that is also adding in her walking a little funny. I grabbed one paw pad and got some bag balm on it, she totally yelped like it hurt her, but now I can touch the one paw bad that I quickly got the stuff on. The other paw pads she just pulls away from me and kinda sits on. Her paw pads are tearing up my comforter because they are so rough. I don't really care about those as much as I do about her pain. I can tell they hurt her. I read on a site that I could put antibiotic cream on them, put a gauze pads on the paw pads and then a doggie boot. Also to stand her in 2 inches of water that has Epson salt in it. The site said in about 10 days her feet should be healed up.
Anyone have any other suggestions? I am going to have to wrestler her down to get the stuff on her feet or trick her and just do one foot at a time, real fast, and get it on her paw and let her go. She whimpers when I touch them and she runs and hides too, poor girl, just another thing to add to her misery. |
