1. Why did you pick the salon you went/go to?
Close to my place

2. If you left a salon, why? Would a coupon bring you back in to give it another try?
If I left it was for a good reason, so probably not.

3. Do you take advantage of any of their specials (like free lotion for a 6 month contract)?
Nope

4. How often do you go?
once a week pretty much all year

5. Which months do you tan the most (I've heard JASON is a killer - July, August, September, October, November)?
see above, might go twice a week for a couple weeks before a vacation though.

6. What non-tanning product would bring you to the salon when you didn't want a tan? Massage? Nails? Home Spa Packages (lotion, scrub, etc. in a gift box)?
As someone else said, if the girls that work the counter gave massages.... lol

7. If you owned your own tanning salon and you were the only customer, what would be perfection?
Well if I was the only customer I would be sad over losing so much money.

8. Do the workers talk to you about the lotions and what they can and cannot do or do you have to approach them?
Most of them know me, so don't say anything about the lotions unless I dont have mine with me, and even then they normally just give me one of those little samples to try.

9. What kind of beds do YOU personally use - the 20 minute, 15 minute, 12 minute or stand up?
I dont understand the minutes... I figured the time you spent in the bed was determined by how dark you currently are, how easy you burn and how dark you want to get. I generally only tan for 10 minutes at a time, but sometimes as little as 6 when they get new bulbs.
Having one stand up would be nice, I use one every 4th time or so just to get rid of the white spots laying down leaves.

10. Do you use any of the "extras" like the sun tattoos, teeth whiteners?
Teeth whiteners in the tanning bed? please explain.

11. Do you buy the minutes or weekly/monthly packages?
I buy minutes

if you decide to go for it, best of luck. I have no doubt if its yours it will be very successful.

Peaches 06-15-2008 07:21 PM

Thanks everyone :) I've been having a blast researching everything. Now if the owners and I can just come to terms with a sale price ;)

One of the main things I've found is the bulbs. You can get an old bed with good bulbs with great results and an awesome new bed with shitty bulbs that sucks. This is the nicest one in town by far - nothing fancy at all like you see in the "big city" so getting the right bulbs in there is going to be very important. I know I've laid in 4 different beds that were the same model and had 4 different results.

It's SO hidden that one of the first things I'm going to do (besides sending out post cards to old customer who haven't been in the past few months) is get some business cards printed up with "Free Tan or Free Aqua Massage" printed on them. This town is small enough where I can give them to damn everyone I run into and if I can get 5% to come in and SEE the place, I've at least accomplished them knowing where it is :)

Honez - will look for that lotion - which means you have to come in for a free tan. You know you have a bedroom here at my house! (I may need to pick up a little..........)

Teeth whiteners in the tanning bed? please explain.

Different beds have different strengths. For instance, you can't lay longer in a 12 minute bed than 12 minutes. It's a stronger bed than a 20 minute bed. I used to use the 20 minute beds to start then go to the 15. Personally I don't like the 12 minute at this particular salon and like I mentioned above, it may be the lamps. Now I start in the 15 minute but only at about 3 minutes and work up.

There are teeth whiteners that supposedly work with the UV rays. Don't know if they do.

Also they had a special offer of unlimited tanning, all five levels of beds, plus unlimited spray tans, (versa Spa) for $49.99 a month, no contract, no init. fees etc.

Although I got a good price, that was not the main reason for joining... Location & its brand new, they are a franchise, and have the latest beds and 30 to 50 beds per location...

Pookie, a place like that in my little town wouldn't get the biz to keep something that big running :thumbsup This one is the largest in town and has 6 beds, lol.

I have looked at the Versa Spa though. LMK what you think about it - what it does to your hair, clothes (if you wear any) palms, nails, etc.. I'd have to get a repo'd or used one as they are SUPER expensive. This one has an airspray tanner and there aren't that many requests for it. In fact, the owners haven't even trained anyone on it in a couple of years (they are pretty absentee owners, which is why they are selling).

maybe a juice bar, or even a cooler with bottles of some healthy drink choice (cold herbal iced teas or juices or mineral waters)

9. What kind of beds do YOU personally use - the 20 minute, 15 minute, 12 minute or stand up?

love the cyclone vortex type new technology super high intensity ones, second the stand up, bulbs must be new and strong though

I've thought about selling bottle juices and such. Apparently if you make your own you're under the Restaurant Gestapo Inspection rule because I just saw that Gold's Gym here in town was inspected.

They DON'T have a stand up and the more I read, the more I think that's the next thing I'll be putting in.

1. Why did you pick the salon you went/go to?
---Only one choice in small town.

2. If you left a salon, why? Would a coupon bring you back in to give it another try?
---free tans would bring me anywhere, but if I left a salon that was conveniently located it would have to be for a good reason and I doubt I'd go back for anything BUT freebies.

3. Do you take advantage of any of their specials (like free lotion for a 6 month contract)?
--I prefer places that sell minutes, and yeah -- if there's a special deal for more minutes I almost always buy a package if my time's up and I need to buy more minutes anyway.

4. How often do you go?
---twice a week if I can

5. Which months do you tan the most (I've heard JASON is a killer - July, August, September, October, November)?
---makes no difference

6. What non-tanning product would bring you to the salon when you didn't want a tan? Massage? Nails? Home Spa Packages (lotion, scrub, etc. in a gift box)?
---waxing, massage, and nails too if they are in a quiet relaxing room.

7. If you owned your own tanning salon and you were the only customer, what would be perfection?
---Ummm, being the only customer would be the perfection-maker; I cannot stand noise in tanning salons and a bunch of obnoxious teenagers hanging around playing loud music and generally acting useless. Other than that, mirrors in the rooms, peace and quiet, cleanliness, no florescent lights. A mature spa-like atmosphere not a chaotic, noisy, teenager place. I also like having plenty of room to sit if the beds are full plus good reading material and not have to make an appointment. It kind of grosses me out when people working there are tanning freaks and look nastily overbronze/leathery. Those people are not good advertisements.

8. Do the workers talk to you about the lotions and what they can and cannot do or do you have to approach them?
---I prefer them to be approachable but let me initiate with questions instead of making me stand there listening to some unnecessary spiel.

9. What kind of beds do YOU personally use - the 20 minute, 15 minute, 12 minute or stand up?
---I've never heard them broken down that way, but I like to use a mid-range bed usually then every so often do the standup or the super-fancy bed.

10. Do you use any of the "extras" like the sun tattoos, teeth whiteners?
---errrr, no.

11. Do you buy the minutes or weekly/monthly packages?
---Minutessssssssss!

Good luck! I do fantasize about the perfect tanning place.

AaliyahLove 06-15-2008 08:57 PM

1. Why did you pick the salon you went/go to?
close to my house, best beds

2. If you left a salon, why? Would a coupon bring you back in to give it another try?
bad beds, bad service

3. Do you take advantage of any of their specials (like free lotion for a 6 month contract)?

4. How often do you go?
4-5 days a week.. yeah, im fn tanorexic

5. Which months do you tan the most (I've heard JASON is a killer - July, August, September, October, November)?
All

6. What non-tanning product would bring you to the salon when you didn't want a tan? Massage? Nails? Home Spa Packages (lotion, scrub, etc. in a gift box)?
The massage bed, the hydration station is the shit, the parafin hand thing

7. If you owned your own tanning salon and you were the only customer, what would be perfection?
Those pimp ass beds that mist and play ipods, a massage therapist on site, friendly service no annoying HS girls, and make sure the employees are TAN theyre all pale at my salon, makes me suspicious

8. Do the workers talk to you about the lotions and what they can and cannot do or do you have to approach them?
They push that shit on me, I think they get paid a commission..

9. What kind of beds do YOU personally use - the 20 minute, 15 minute, 12 minute or stand up?
The best beds they have, the kind that cost $20 a session if u dont have a pkg.. hydration station, mystic tan rt b4 photoshoots, the massage bed

10. Do you use any of the "extras" like the sun tattoos, teeth whiteners?
nah but I bought one of those caps that protect ur hair.. its very sexy lol

11. Do you buy the minutes or weekly/monthly packages?
Year long pkg.. $132 a month unlimited, $132 to cancel :(

Many thanks - I'm thinking of buying a salon and really want to market the hell out of it. It's been run by friends who have several other companies and they just don't have the time to run this place. They don't advertise, don't follow up with customers who stop coming, none of their employees upsell - and it's STILL making a profit. It's just waiting for someone to "work it" to bring it to it's full potential. It's completely turn key for me but I'll have to actually get out of my PJs to work so I'm still deciding

And no, there will be no cams or peepholes
Good luck!

They hooked me with the tag line "It has the same stuff in it as red wine which helps with aging skin". It could have had elephant piss in it and I would have tried it but, to my surprise it actually smelled nice, worked well and did leave me feeling more hydrated.

Maybe we can spend our honeymoon at casa del Peaches? Wedding is in August which means the honeymoon will be sometime next year. That should give you time to pick up a little. Then again, as long as I have room in the bed, I ain't picky :)

stand ups are great, but I don't know if it is because bulbs are expensive and they have so many of them, but I find 2 out of 3 places I go to the stand up tanner feels weak like old bulbs

someone else mentioned it in this thread, and I kind of agree, if I ran a place I would get one of those newfangled machines (think they are called vortex or something like that)...... they are space age looking and have more bulbs and are more angled and they are very strong, they usually recommend under 10 minutes, and places that have them usually charge double minutes on them but customers that like a strong bed or need to fill in hard to reach places will pay the extra and are happy for it because the beds rock... look into it instead of a stand up

It's funny, it's been proven time and time again how shitty tanning is for your skin but people around here are straight up ADDICTED... I'm the only girl I know who has never been to a tanning salon, and I plan to never go. I want to look decent when I'm older.

Well, I was never a "mighty", and while I doubt I'll make the $$ I've made in the last few years in real estate, quite honestly I think owning this is going to be a blast :) I took medical coding classes and realized it was going to take several years before I could work for myself and I HATED the tediousness of it. I'm at the point in my life where I can do what I want - why not do it? This place was never even on the market - just happened to hit at the right place at the right time :winkwink:

And yes, if you read my first post you'll see that I've thought about putting a nail salon in there, lol. I need to work on ventilation issues though I might wait and buy another salon I have my eye on and put a few nail stations there.

Just because I can do what I want, don't hate :thumbsup

My uncle sent me an article about skin cancer due to sun and as I pointed out to him, if I make money off other people's vices, so be it. I did with porn for 13 years, I'd sell cigarettes, booze, lottery tickets, open a pawn shop, pay day loan and a check cashing place. It's not my business to tell people what to do which is one of the reasons I believe in less, not more, government. Plus, as someone who's played golf for 50 of his 68 years I'm betting he's had a LOT more exposure to the sun than any of my clients will. Tanning beds are controlled whereas the sun is not. I still use SPF lotions in tanning beds and after spending months in tanning beds and then going on 2 different beach vacations 3 weeks apart, I got a LOT more sun damage at the beach than the tanning salon.

But again, I'm not here to make the world a healthier place - I have a brother, mother, and 2 sisters in the healthcare biz - I'll leave that to them - I'm here to make money :upsidedow

You're probably talking about this:

http://www.sunitalia.com/magicmanual.pdf

There have been some discussions about these - some good, most "This thing costs WAY too much for what it does". I might get one if I can get a good deal on a repo, but a stand up (with good bulbs, natch) I think would NOW bring in more customers and make them happy with the results. That could always change in a year or so.

Off to the dentist who will make more on me today than I'll make in a month in the tanning biz. :disgust

I'm sorry, I didn't read the whole thread,

BUT only idiots would go to a tanning salon (REGULARLY)

But since I smoke cigarettes I am really no better, we are about equally as stupid.

I spend a lot of time in the sun. (on a boat) It's even worse. I still get tanned wearing a long sleeve shirt and hat and sun block.

Don't think it's safe. It's not.

Well, I'm almost 47 and while I don't look 30, I certainly don't think I look 60 either :winkwink:

Just like anything else you can do things in excess that harm you.

Peaches 06-16-2008 04:17 PM

We both do, lol. Hell, I've been "tanning" since I was an infant - where ever we lived we had a vacation house on the water. If we weren't there, we were at the pool. All day, every day. Living in the south and 5 years in FL, that was A LOT. There are pictures of me where I'm darned black!

I love the sun - even the fake sun makes me feel better.

I went to the beach with 9 of my HS girlfriends - we've been going to the beach together for 30+ years now. Every time some saggy 80 year old woman (though she could have been 25, based on some the comments here) walked by we'd say "That'll be us!!" Who cares?? :)

BV 06-17-2008 06:27 PM

Oh well I was a little harsh, sorry, but it is true, the less sun the better off you will be.

Take it from someone born and raised in fla and have seen people with out any more noses or ears and shit like that.

Even growing up here I remember my step dad (who worked outside) would always be getting little skin cancers burned off his arms and nose all the time. A few have to be cut out sometimes.

If you didn't get checked out regularly and were to let them go you might lose an ear or nose or even spread into your whole body and could KILL you.

potter 06-17-2008 06:38 PM

guys who go tanning = retards

Trixie 06-17-2008 07:00 PM

Good lord -- it *IS* possible to tan without doing it to excess. It's annoying when everyone acts like it's *damaging* your skin; building muscle means "damaging" muscle, too. You get a lot of health benefits out of tanning; living in WA state we have a way higher rate of cancer than people in sunnier locations and there's evidence it's partly BECAUSE of having less sun exposure. Also, tanning in moderation is good for your bones because the vitamin d helps you absorb calcium.

There are plenty of people who tan who you wouldn't even guess do it because THEY DON'T GO CRAZY WITH IT. Sheesh.

Anyway, I hope it works for you, Peaches -- it sounds like fun! Our local lady retired and I wish we could have bought the biz; I would have sold high-end sex toys to the ladies. Sigh.

LOL, had NOT thought of that :thumbsup This is a small town - I bet if done discretely, I could make a fortune from those not wanting to risk the mail, hehehe.

Still working on $$$ amounts with the current owners. As with anything you own, they think it's worth more than it is.

ExtremeBank_Adam 07-24-2008 01:35 PM

Did you ever buy the tanning salon?

Alysha and I actually own a tanning salon as well as a few other non-adult businesses. We aren't hands on with it, and I only stop by there every once in a while (Alysha stops by to print the paychecks once a week), but it's a fairly profitable business for us, considering we don't have to babysit it too much.

If you're still looking for advice, let me know and I'll pass along the info to her.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Why did you pick the salon you went/go to? it's close to my office

2. If you left a salon, why? Would a coupon bring you back in to give it another try? depends on the coupon

3. Do you take advantage of any of their specials (like free lotion for a 6 month contract)? not really

4. How often do you go? 2 o3 times a month

5. Which months do you tan the most (I've heard JASON is a killer - July, August, September, October, November)?

6. What non-tanning product would bring you to the salon when you didn't want a tan? Massage? Nails? Home Spa Packages (lotion, scrub, etc. in a gift box)? why would i bring anything?

7. If you owned your own tanning salon and you were the only customer, what would be perfection? if i told u that then I'd have to kill u lol

8. Do the workers talk to you about the lotions and what they can and cannot do or do you have to approach them? sometimes but i have my own

9. What kind of beds do YOU personally use - the 20 minute, 15 minute, 12 minute or stand up? stand up 8-12 min

10. Do you use any of the "extras" like the sun tattoos, teeth whiteners? no

11. Do you buy the minutes or weekly/monthly packages? it's sold by $$$ and min

Odie 07-24-2008 03:45 PM

do ur research on beds..stand ups are the best..bulbs are expensive but I love em..you can lease the stand ups if u wanna test them out for a bit.

I have a biz plan for a salon...almost put it together but couldn't find the right location..:)
