It's really a good idea to sell some of the off. There really WERE too many !

Vegas Ken 07-02-2008 12:05 AM

Oh man if the one near my house goes out, I am going to be so bummed!

Redjellybean 07-02-2008 12:09 AM

Good stuff. I can't stand Starbucks and all those people walking round drinking shit coffee! They are the McDonalds of high street drinks.

The Ghost 07-02-2008 12:44 AM

They have a very powerful brand. I don't drink their coffee but have respect for how they've built an empire from an everyday product. They're made it more than the product, it's an experience and status.

Amazing for something as simple as coffee :)

I could live without the warranty as well :winkwink:

cranki 07-02-2008 01:23 AM

They have quite a bunch of stores located vis-à-vis and it's beyond me how nobody realized that this store policy just doesn't work in the long run.

DutchTeenCash 07-02-2008 01:53 AM

THE reason why sb doesnt have that many stores in europe: anyone paying $8-10 for coffee (cause thats what it costs here) gets his own machine and makes coffee thats 10 times as tasty

Why 07-02-2008 03:57 AM

well i cant say that ill personally miss them.

Yoni 07-02-2008 05:04 AM

I hope they'll close their store in Prague

Sarah_Jayne 07-02-2008 05:06 AM

I don't drink coffee so I have been spared what appears to be a Starbucks addiction. It does always look like a lot of money for a drink and I suppose in tough times people might pull back a it on those sort of things.

shadowsdrop 07-02-2008 06:42 AM

I hope this isn't true. I love Starbucks. Cool place to hangout. With the free wifi, I can watch porn sites when I there.

their coffee is too expensive, and if you have to choose between $4 a gallon of gas or $4 a cup of coffee, I'm sure the option is clear.
They need to lower their prices, and that will fix most of their problems.

The End of the Universe
"...and if you walk to the end of the block, there sits a Starbucks. And directly across the street -- in the exact same building as that Starbucks -- there is... another Starbucks. There is a Starbucks across the street from a Starbucks! And ladies and gentlemen, THAT is the end of the universe." - Lewis Black

look at the 5 day chart on that page you linked.
as I mentioned earlier, their sales were merely 'up' from what analysts had forecast, not 'up' from the previous month. in other words, they didn't lose as much as was expected.

you know, a large part of the problem they (and all auto manufacturers) are experiencing right now, is directly due to modern day investor expectations. shareholders generally aren't interested in making steady profits over the long term via dividends, they're interested in doing whatever increases revenue in the current fiscal quarter and drives up stock prices.

conforming to that goal has meant continuing to build large trucks & SUV's and not focusing on economy cars over the past 5 years, despite a steady rise in gas prices and the inevitable present-day situation.

the automakers are as capable as any other industry of anticipating future market demands, yet their hands are tied partially due to short term speculators that help to create the mess they - and the country as a whole - are currently in.

pornguy 07-02-2008 08:08 AM

What the fuck do they expect at 7$ for a cup of coffee.

Sarah_Jayne 07-02-2008 08:16 AM

I don't know about in the States but if they close one on your street in London there are still going to be two others on that street to go to. At least that is how it feels.

Magnus 07-02-2008 08:45 AM

As long as they don't close ours I'm happy. It's $2.25 a coffee not 7 bucks, if you start ordering frilly shit then yes.. you will pay about $5.00. Like everything in life, you don't like it, don't buy it. Looks like more than few people feel that way by taking their Coffee biz elsewhere and they probabaly tried to expand way too quickly.

Phoenix 07-02-2008 08:47 AM

dont worry tim hortons will fill the gap

coming soon...everywhere:)

Methodcash Rick 07-02-2008 08:52 AM

Starbucks closing 600 stores is NOTHING when you consider the number of stores they have..

Hell, I did a quick search on their site, for all locations within 10 miles of the house..

I came up with 84 stores, with in 10 miles... that's 8.4 stores per mile...

600 stores would be like them closing 6 stores in 100 cities, that's nothing.

P.S. I don't even drink coffee, so as far as I'm concerned, there's 84 too many Starfucks in my area.

Jim_Gunn 07-02-2008 08:55 AM

Starbucks is a total waste of time and money. I don't drink coffee and make my hot tea at home. The inconvenience of driving there, wasting gas and overpaying for coffee which should only cost pennies per cup makes anyone frequenting those places a fool. If you are that much into coffee, buy your own machine and make your own at home. You will save money and time and gas and you will have the satisfaction that you aren't a lemming willingly giving up your hard earned money to some big corporation that charges you a premium for wasting your precious time.

TubeTitans_SusieQ 07-02-2008 08:56 AM

Thats really crappy considering they just opened one around the corner about a month and a half ago lol

ali25extreme 07-02-2008 08:56 AM

I do enjoy having a starbucks coffee every once and awhile but I have switched to hot tea for now and redbull! I don't think that it will be a huge notice with all the stores they have up, close and the workers can switch to carribu..I think that I spelled that incorrectly. 12,000 out of work starbucks employees sucks. I do feel bad for them! i will miss my frozen coffee thing if my store closes but I can make them at home!

right. :thumbsup

but Starbucks here in our country have no plans of closure! they were being harboured by most people (e.g. socialites) which is retarded! :disgust

jhauser 07-02-2008 09:38 AM

The one by my house has been dead lately. A couple of years ago it opened right before xmas and it was always packed now I drive by and I am lucky to see 2 cars there.

This actually made me laugh.

I wonder how many people really think like this when buying coffee?

You have a point. It is so popular because of it's name. People wanna drink it for the same reason they wanna wear designer clothing. When it comes down to it, coffee is coffee and jeans are jeans.

Problem is:

a) most don't work at home
b) you don't save much money if you are only making a cup for yourself
c) sometimes you don't want a cup of coffee until you are already out
d) I don't want to wake up early to make coffee
e) even if I did make it before work, I don't like drinking it until I am at work so...
f) you don't drink coffee so you are an expert?
g) how many people really drive just to get a cup of coffee?
h) who is it any more lemming like to go to starbucks and get coffee vs. own a computer or a TV? Or buy a car or gas or anything really? Or what about premium beer or liquor?

I don't support starbucks and I don't understand drinking anything beyond a regular coffee there since I agree that it's overpriced. But that is just my opinion. If people like it and are willing to pay for it, who cares?

I think they are shutting down more because there are too many of them. They probably planned for this and only opened so many so that they could get good branding and saturate the market.
