Yeah, I'm bouncing to London to meet ds, and a few other old friends - we're doing the UK, then they're coming back to France so I can show them around, then Kiev and Moscow as a group. Ds and I will be doing the Mongolia leg ourselves.

You should come, but I don't know if there are that many asylums :P

I did that trip the opposite way... Beijing to Moscow via Ulaan Bataar in '85 in the middle of a nasty Siberian winter, truly mindblowing...many stories... like the time I came out of the train station in Ulaan Bataar to see the Tran Siberian moving off down the platform...without me.. but with my backpack. :Oh crap I had to run to find an open door and a guard barely pulled me up before it got too fast... it was like a scene from an old Western.. would not have been fun waiting a week in Outer Mongolia for the next train with no money passport/visa etc. :error

I always look forward to your pics but can't wait to see what you capture on this next one especially. Have fun! :thumbsup

Unreal. Un-fucking-real. What gear do you use for these shots?

X37375787 07-12-2008 12:26 PM

More specifically, what gear do you use for light travel? I have a Gitzo GT2540 with Markins M10, I have the feeling like it may be too heavy to drag it around future travels.

I'd love to learn more about your gear, as I am a gear head through and through.

kektex 07-12-2008 02:35 PM

Awesome stuff as usual quantum!
You really should post these pics in desktop resolution on your site. I want to rotate them all as my desktop background hehe

NickXXX 07-12-2008 02:38 PM

Hey :)
Thanks for the compliments.

Here's what I shoot with:
Canon 1Ds, Normally a 17-40mm F4.0, or a 50MM f1.4

for the panoramic, a Fuji TX-2 / Hasselblad XPan-2 [they're the same camera], with a 30mm lens.

For lighting, normally just carry a LED torch, or if it's really dark, a 540EX Canon Flash, but that's it :)

OhYesCash 07-12-2008 05:49 PM

Damn dude, insane pictures! Those last three are off the heezy.

The link on page 1 doesn't seem to be working, and I also would love to have a full size one for my desktop.

Amazing shots as usual man, very nice. :thumbsup

Is that the $300 trip you're talking about? I've been trying to get someone to go with me on that for 3 years, none of my buddies will go. Was even in Europe on the 25th Anniversary and couldn't find someone to go with.

I am actually headed to Europe on Wednesday, if you're going to be in the area before the end of the month let me know and we can meet up someplace.

Not sure how much it is, but it includes a stroll through the airplane + military graveyard left after the event, which is nice - most trips just go through pryapt.

Where are you going to be in Europe? This month is packed to the brim, but if you're in Paris, let me know, we can always meet up to do something ;)

I'll actually be in Paris on Thursday, but only for a quick layover. I'll be mostly in Germany and am trying to make it to Russia to visit a friend for a couple days, but ticket prices are crazy expensive. Other than that I have a bunch of days open, so if you get a couple days that open up let me know and we can try to meet up.

Otherwise have fun, be safe and post the pics when you get back. :thumbsup

Unfortunately, I'm locked down here for this month. Guests, preparations and moving house in the same breath.

You got a russian visa, or an EU passport?

No worries man, there will be other opportunities.

And actually no, I didn't think that I needed one. And now that I am reading the page about it, it looks like I do. But I haven't been able to find a flight for under $600 from Germany, so it doesn't look like I'll make it over there after all. :Oh crap

You sure do need a visa.
Be prepared to stand in long, long queues to get one, too ;)

Try looking at expedia.fr - found flights from berlin to moscow, $350USD

Rorschach 07-15-2008 01:42 AM

quantum-x your photos never cease to impress. :thumbsup
