I was born in Southern California, lived there my whole life up until a few years ago when I moved here to Vegas. I'm of mixed descent, asian/hawaiin/caucasian, my parents grew up on military bases around the world so they are extremely open minded about other cultures. When I visit other parts of the country, the east coast, the south, the midwest, etc. I'm always struck by the lack of diversity, and in some places, the close-mindedness and well, frankly the ignorance that some peope still live in. In some small towns across the country, and even some big cities, I feel like I've time travelled back to the 50's. Even here in Vegas I miss the diversity of Southern California.

And actually, being partly of Japanese descent I always thought there was a very small Japanese community in Southern California, especially compared to the Koreans.

Also the lack of the chains to eat at.

Really makes me wonder what part of "LA" you were in. Or perhaps, you are just unfamiliar with the chains out here.

You won't find a Sonic most likely. What chain couldn't you find?

Weird as I love visiting LA. Hung out with Latincash Gary and XXX Jay. Had one of the best times of my life. The traffic never bothered me but we have traffic here also (minneapolis). I was on sunset and hung out in that area. Otherwise I have been to Manhatten beach several times and love it to.

I love your George Best quote bro!

Yeah, the mad rush to live in New Orleans is amazing.

Anyone that bitches about LA traffic obviously hasn't driven in many places.

I've driven plenty of places toots.

As I said, LA traffic is just like Detroit, or Dallas, or other big cities. However, it's about three times longer a commute in it. Or feels like it anyways. I have not been to Atlanta, but I hear it's about the same there.

I thought I mentioned the places we went...:disgust

Greater Los Angeles
Hollywood
West Hollywood
Beverly Hills
Venice Beach
Chinatown
Downtown
Laguna Beach
Newport Beach
Huntington Beach
Bel Aire

I might be missing a few places, but we covered a lot in 4 days.

interesting review of la, ive never been there.

LA is LA and can't be compared to the rest of california....You should take a trip up north from carmel to san fransico all around the bay area and take a trip from there to tahoe then come back and tell us your story.

Actually, I will be visiting N. Cali later this year if time allows with everything I have going on. Already have Disney, Mackinaw, Seattle, Kings Island, and Las Vegas before year's end. But I would like to get back to N Cali before heading to Hawaii.

I don't know what you mean by greater Los Angeles. And you must have been taking side streets if you could not find a chain eatery.

I mean, greater Los Angeles area. Pull out a map, and look the cities I named off. I covered quite a bit of geography toots.

If you call Sepulveda, and Santa Monica side streets (as examples) then yeah...
:disgust

I also did not say, "I could not find any chains", I said the chains I saw a lot of (Taco Bell/Pizza Hut).

Furthermore, I said I did not see them in numbers like I see here, or in other big cities. I saw more mom and pops then chains.

However, I admitted seeing more as I went into Orange County. But still not on the volume I would see in some other big cities.

I just do not get why you would want chains, or did you?
I understand they are familiar and shit but I also feel they are one of the worst things to happen to American food culture ever, even above and beyond TV dinners.

Good point.

It isn't that I wanted chains, or didn't. I was simply making an observation on things I saw around L.A., and the areas I was in, versus some of the other places I have visited.

i.e. less chains, more mom n pops with a lettering system.

I grew up in the Monterey Bay and around Carmel, I went to LA for college and the action of living in a big city, I left because I had enough of It...Still like to go up and visit my parents, California is a HUGE place cant just judge it on LA alone...

it's unfortunate you had a shitty vacation. :-( better luck next time eh!

tyler (durden) 07-17-2008 09:29 AM

the last time i was out in LA (for the GFY party at the Playboy Mansion in November which was a great party) I decided that I actually HATE LA. seriously, and that's coming from someone that has preached about California being the best to live since he was 6.

i no longer consider Los Angeles part of California.
