if you take a dog to an offleash park with other dogs then you have to accept there will be dog fights.

it would be like going to an "alcohol ok beach" during spring break and wondering why you got into a fight.

Good posting and very true. Dogs will fight. That is why I do not take my German Shepherd to dog parks anymore. She likes to fight with other dogs and I do not want her to hurt another dog.

The ppl with the "kill pitbulls cuz they are killing machines" are so fucking ignorant its painful. Any dog is what you make it. Are pitbulls strong? Sure they are, but if you don't raise them to attack and hurt people you have nothing to worry about. Pitbulls are the most human friendly dogs I have ever owned. I have 2 of them and they wouldn't hurt a flee. My blood boils at the attitudes and remarks ignorant people make about how mean and and viscious they are. You can't blame a dog for being a dog. You also can't blame a dog for being raised by a fuck up human who shouldn't own the dog in the first place.

May I ask. Why did you have a dog of that size and age running around with pitbulls and larger dogs in the first place? Of course if it get's in a fight it's gonna get it's ass kicked. It doesn't belong running around with medium/large sized dogs. Whether it was a pitbull or a golden retriever it didn't belong there.

I go to the dog park all the time and my 2 american pitbull terriers have never attacked anything. Have they both been attacked? Yes they have.

Don't blame the breed of dog for something you did wrong. You shoulda had your dog with dogs it's own size. I am sorry your dog got beat up, that's never a cool thing to experience, but please don't blame "pitbulls" for what happened. Blame yourself or the owner of the pitbull if in fact the dog was animal aggressive.

Poor little puppy. I am glad to hear that he is OK. Most pit bulls are fine dogs unless their owner is a moron (which is sadly all too often the case).

Well that would make sense. Until you own one, you don't understand how awesome american pitbull terriers really are. If all you ever hear about in the press is how mean and viscious they are, you wouldn't understand that they are the complete opposite until you own one or spend time with one.

I know so many people who had the same ignorant view on how "mean" they are. I can't tell you how many times my 2 pitbulls have totally changed peoples views on them. They are just dogs. They aren't born killers. Unfortunately because they look intimidating, they have fallen into the hands of too many wrong people. In turn, they are being raised and treated like shit which is causing bad situations, and their breeds reputation is now completely destroyed. Dont blame the breed, blame the fucking shithole human race for making them what they are.

Hows your puppy doing? Not a permanent limp I hope? ...I think we need more pictures now that it's been a few days. :winkwink:

Spooky, no one denies the damage that reactive Pit bulls are capable of. Those of us who understand that it's the owners, not the dogs... want something to be done about these bad owners. That's what people should be advocating about. If you ban the breed, the bad people will still find a way to own one. Or they will find another breed to abuse if they can't. Just like they would if you banned guns. And the good owners and pit pulls will be punished. What are they gonna do.. ban labrador/pit bull mixes, or any dog resembling a Pit bull?

Here's a good example of what breed banning acommplishes... In 1989, Denver, Colorado banned the Pit bull breed. The amount of Pit bull attacks in Denver has not declined since this date. It accomplished nothing. People still own Pit bulls in Denver illegally. In 2004 Colorado passed a law that prohibits the banning of specific breeds. But in Denver they still hunt down Pit bulls and take them away from innocent families. Many people moved out of the city because of this.

They often get the breed of dog wrong in these sensational news stories of pit bull attacks. I remember the media getting it entirely wrong with the Ving Rhames case where his groundskeeper was found dead. Rhames's dogs were actually a Mastiff type and a Bulldog. Not Pit bulls. And they didn't kill the person either like originall reported. I think that case was a great example how the media is incredibly quick to blame pit bulls. They didn't even the get correct dog breed on initial reporting. This is common though.

AaronM says he's seen good pit bulls owned by good owners act just as bad. Huh? It NEVER happens. Every single story I see in the news of Pit bull attacks it's always the tie out dogs that broke loose, never walked, never trained, etc. In a rare case, if a otherwise well behaved dog has cancer, or some other serious disease, he may act out. But this can happen to ANY dog. And good dogs will bite too if you corner them... If you leave them with no other choice.

Great post Walrus. It gives me a little hope to see that there are people out there who understand the problem is not the dog, it's the bad owners.

I had Rusty there cause the crowd that go there (around 10 to 15) have mainly small dogs with a couple of labs and golden retrievers thrown in. Been going there with rusty every day for over a month with no problems apart from the usual little 10 second fights over a ball or something. This guy comes along with his pitbull and whilst my gut told me to leave I didn't want to be a wuss so stayed. I should have left. Anyway Rusty is fine now.

BradM 07-18-2008 04:49 PM

We have a small Pug/Poodle mix. But he's tough as fuck. He can handle himself easily at a dog park. But yesterday he was overwhelmed by 4 large breeds. 1 pit, 2 wolf mixes and a german shepard. They really scared the fucking hell out of him. He can handle 1 of them, but they all ganged up and tried to mouth fuck him.

I scared the bastards out, picked up the dog and walked to a different area.

I didn't say ANYTHING to the owners, just nodded and smiled and walked away. Why? My dog can overplay too. Every single animal is different and the thresholds are different.

But biting and drawing blood = too far and I would have just walked out too.

Yah man, I hear yah. But if your gut told ya something was wrong, you shoulda went with it and removed your dog. I do it all the time, when I am at the park if an aggressive dog or a dog that I think might cause an issue comes in, I leave. I know if shit hits the fan and it isn't my dogs fault, they will still get blamed because they are pitbulls. Your dog, especially at its size can't help itself, it's just a dog. You need to make sure it's safe. I see peoplle all the time at parks bring in their dogs who clearly shouldn't be there. I take my dogs and remove them. I am sorry about your dog though, seeing your dog fight isn't fun. Mine have been attacked by larger dogs and breaking up fights with stronger dogs is very scary. Glad your little guy made it out alive.

Please don't blame the pitbull breed for what happened though. Blame the owner and pretty much yourself if you knew the situation could get ugly and you chose to keep your dog in it.
