How this specific event started was with a half-punch half-elbow shove. Had I been on the receiving end of that... I've have laughed, asked if that was all they had, and squared up again just in case. The 'aggressor' obviously wanted no part of the other guy (and for good reason - apparently) or he'd have followed up the shove.

Honestly - I'm secure enough in my masculinity to allow someone a single shove without trying to kill them.

it's simple really... the guy that hit first has already confirmed his intent of hurting you. If possible, the only objective is preventing him hurting you, and the best way to do that is to make sure he can't hurt you, i.e. don't let him get back up.
