I think I put on a few extra ounces over the summer.

WarChild 08-27-2008 10:37 AM

The reason your weight goes up and down when you try and control it with diet alone is because you're not doing anything to change your body compisition.

If you're quite over weight, you're probably eating not only unhealthy food, but too much of it. When you cut the intake to a restrictive level, of course you lose weight. The problem is, you haven't changed your metabolism, if anything you've made it even slower. As soon as you stop the caloric deficit, bam you put the weight right back on.

The _ONLY_ effective way to control your weight is through diet AND exercise. Food is a fuel, not a comfort.

When you build lean muscle, cheat days, weeks or even months will have almost no effect on you.

I stopped the restrictive diet for most of the summer, and haven't gained a pound.

industry incentives can't wait to become a part of this! We will work something out with sharky to give the participants an incentive to stick with the program and get healthier!

Make a plan for life and stick with it. It is not hard at all when you get used to it. Loosing weight and then gaining again to do it all over again is actually really bad for you health, it is much better to keep it off for good!

*hugs and kisses and good luck*

You know, I agree with you. I went through a divorce and a huge change of circumstance. I was suddenly in a situation where i didn't have the freedom I once did to work out right. I became a single father and had to adjust. No excuse in hindsight, but I felt sorry for myself and left my healthy lifestyle.

Oh well. I have recognized it and am moving forward. I'm still down 100lbs from my highest weight, which is great! Most would be happy with that, I am not

And thanks!

Nothing went wrong behavior wise. I grew a human ( a happy healthy one too! ) and my metabilism is shot because of it. No excuses. My body simply does not work the way it once did, it doesn't do the same things with the things I eat. i eat right, I don't eat alot, but i have very different results from what worked for me for the previous 30 years. I can be more aware and active and try to see if it helps.

Peaches 08-27-2008 12:19 PM

Food is my drug. When I'm happy, I celebrate with food. When I'm sad, I soothe my self with food. And not "good" food either - the really bad stuff. The problem with food addiction is that unlike booze and drugs, you can't cut it out entirely. Plus I refuse to spend the rest of my life being miserable because I can't eat the things I enjoy. Life's too short for that. I'll work out and cut DOWN but I refuse to deprive myself of happiness :) And if that makes me a tad overweight then so be it. I just need to get to where I'm a "tad" overweight ;)

You drop 10lbs and you will be toned!

Perhaps we should break this up into a male and female contest?!?!?!?!

I accept the Challenge, can you hang?!?!

That sounds good...seems like the women that have responded here don't have much to lose and it may be fairer if we do separate contests....but either way I am game.

You just watch me Sharky...I have wanted to lose the extra pounds I?ve packed on for months now...just no motivation to do so?now I have no excuses.

I agree with you 100%.
I laxed my diet when I reached my target weight. It was only after I missed the workouts did i start gaining again. If you miss one day, it becomes easier to miss the next and so on..

I'm 6'3" and my heaviest ever was around 285 in 2004. Down to 230 currently, but haven't been able to go more than a pound or two under without popping back over 230. I eat pretty well and don't junk out much, but I haven't been in the gym in maybe 2 years, so I guess I should start going again.
After getting up to 285 I hit the gym and dropped to 210 in about 8 months. I want to get that thin again, and try to keep it that way. My 15 year old son is 6'4" and 285. I've been after him to get off the PC and work out, probably going to have to force him to go to the gym for both our sakes.

Socks 08-27-2008 03:27 PM

hehe, seems like the ONLY motivation people needed was for someone else to say they were gonna do it, and BLAM... Everyone is gonna go that hting that they've been meainng to do forever but can never get started or keep with it.. :P

I'll believe it when people show some before after pics!!

I'm in the same fuckin boat though.. I weigh nothing, but I've got a soft midsection from years of Tortellini abuse.. I eat whatever I want really, 27 now, think that's about to run out..

Anyways after seeing what Michael Phelps eats for breakfast, I'm convinced I can still eat great food and not be hungry if I can keep to a daily excercise routine. My wife is leaving for Mexico in a few days, I'm gonna see if I can accomplish a 30 day crash course, see where it gets me (tired...)

Its totally true though, even though I'm generally skinny, I sigh when I sit down, and my muscles feel anxious a lot because I don't do anything with them.. Probably as unhealthy as a 300 pound person!

Elli 08-27-2008 04:10 PM

Great thread Sharky! It looks like you have tons of workout partners! I found a site that allows you to set up groups of four people to cheer each other on and do similar workouts and such at PeerTrainer.com. It helped me quite a bit, actually.

I'm all for losing my last 8 STUBBORN pounds. Ugh they've been hanging around forever it feels like!

sue 08-27-2008 04:26 PM

I have been about the same weight since my teens, I am 40 now. And believe me when I say I eat a lot. The secret is simple, eat 6-7 times per day but smaller meals and exercise daily. Skip all drinks besides water, lots of proteins, fruit and vegetables. AND DO NOT TRY TO SKIP ALL CARBS!!!! Your brain needs food as well and your body needs the carbs to recover from the exercise.

What hits me the most is that most really overweight people skip breakfast and sometimes lunch as well and only have a huge dinner. That is the worst you can do to your body. Dont skip any meal at all!!

*hugs and kisses*

Yes, that's how I am...

I'm 5'9 and change and around 265.....I might have lost 15 pounds maximum since February but I'm down a shirt size from 2xl to xxl....I've just now discovered the magic of squats so I'm going to be losing more inches in no time....

I can't see me weighing any less than 250 when I get down to xl.....

I just lift weights and squeeze in some Yoga and Pilates when I can.....Plus lots of time in the Sauna and Jacuzzi....Plus I swim a little bit.......But when I'm in the weightroom, I work out HARD so that I can build muscle and in turn, burn more calories while I am at rest......My sex drive has gone through the roof and my ballsac is always on full....I bust nice thick loads now on the routine....

If you aren't worried about pounds and more about looking good and reversing the aging process, LIFT WEIGHTS!!!.....I should've been doing this shit a long time ago.....I dont' diet or any of that shit....I still drink but it's mostly Merlot these days and I still smoke the herb.....I quit smoking cigarettes regularly but that has only been since June so for five of the past 8 months, I was inhaling toxic Newport smoke........I also have a half eaten $1 double cheeseburger from Mcdonalds sitting right here.....

I take Zinc and Folic acid for muscle growth and sperm development....I just bought some Magnesium today to help me lift weights....And I also take a multi vitamin....

And when I'm eating a fatty meal, I pop a couple capsules of Chitosan because not only does it suck up the fat out of your meal, it's a great source of fiber....

fatfoo 08-27-2008 09:11 PM

My goal is around 220.

Pornopat 08-27-2008 09:32 PM

Snake Doctor 08-27-2008 09:38 PM

I just read this book (and another one similar to it)
http://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Free-...97896&sr= 8-1

and feel like I've already lost 100lbs....the weight that was lifted off of my shoulders.

It's obviously not for everyone. Not everyone is overweight for the same reason. Our chosen profession doesn't exacltly burn lots of calories during the work day.

BUT, for some people, going on a diet or joining a gym to lose weight is like taking cough syrup for emphysema.

Socks 08-27-2008 10:18 PM

Pretty crazy all the 200-300 pound people around here.. That's a lot of pounds!

I'm curious.. What did you guys weigh at 14-15 years old, 20 years old, 25, 30, 35, etc? Did you experience rapid weight gain over a few years, or did you just have big parents?

Summer of 18 I shot up to 200lbs and was that till about 22.

I've been as high as 280lbs last year.

It's wholly dependent on my activity level.

Yes.....

A sport just isn't as fun if you're out of shape....Last Judo class was January of 2008.....We did some kind of exercise where you bend over fast to touch the floor and then kick your legs back into a pushup position and then come back and stand up again....When I bent over, the sharp pain that my intestines gave me let me know that I didn't need to be in there right now...

I've been in the gym ever since......And I don't care what people say about the "technique" of Judo...When you're in a tournament, you need stamina and MUSCLE......."technique" only works if the other person isn't expecting you to put a judo move on them.....I know personally that it's damn near impossible to throw me in a sparring session and I don't care what belt you are...

The excercise you are talking about sounds like burpees. I usually jump when standing back up as highh as possible. And yes Bro, it's a fucking bitch. :(

I agree on the technique, it always looks pretty in practice, but in tourneys, its all about who's the stronger PLUS technique. Get back in the saddle soon man!

You don't care what people that actually know about Judo have to say? It's about technique and using the other persons motion against them.

I know a 70 year old man who could throw you around like a bag of lollipops and there's nothing you could do to stop him. That's what 50 years of Judo does to a person. :2 cents:
