That is it. Community service = slave labor.
So glad that we put a stop to all of that shit after WWI and WWII. If we have proved anything, we have proved that community service does not help and it indeed is not only unamerican it is slave labor.

Great Idea IMO.. 100 hours a year for 4 years, and you get the first $4000 of your college free?? That is $10.00 an hour for community service..

What is wrong with that? Its a great deal... Help out people who need it and get a break on your first year of school.

Like I touched on before.

What would happen if say those who qualified could get free medical school, or say free nursing, medical specialty, etc. In return when they graduate they put in same amount of time school took working at a hospital for minimal pay (survivable but minimal). Would that not help to get closer to affordable healthcare plus get more people into healthcare.

Too many variables on this one, cost of living based on state/region/city, cost of gas for going to work, inflation rates etc..

If they pro-rated evertying based on expense reports and such you would need to file and prove, why the fuck not do this? It could work if it was done right.. 8 years of school, 8 years of working getting by.. That would put you on the same income level as your profits after paying the student loan cost in the first place once they start racking up interest..

It would be a plausible alternative to loans.. but you would have to calculate inflation and all those other factors per year or per 6 months in some areas.

They sort of already do this with interns and shit. ER's are already full of people just out of medical school.

It also does not have to be equal time either, just reasonable.

FYI its mandatory out here in Cali for kids in high school. (at least in Magnet schools, I was class of '03 and it was a requirement)

Big John 11-09-2008 09:31 AM

It's probably been said by now but did any of the idiots 'against' this actually read the details? $10+ an hour for a college student sounds like pretty good pay to me - places they usually end up in pay FAR less. And hey - don't want the $4k... then don't do it.

Even the middle school when you look into it, would be more a part of their lessons and probably a lot more valuable as a lesson than some stuff they do now. :2 cents:

Adultnet 11-09-2008 09:36 AM

this is a good concept but must be well planed and organized to be effective so most impotent is the implementation of the program.

Snake Doctor 11-09-2008 10:50 AM

Hey guys it's not $10 an hour, it's $40 an hour.

You get a $4000 per year tuition tax credit.

And again, even if there weren't financial incentives...you could make something like this part of the curriculum in public high school and colleges that receive any type of public funding.....and that would cover 90% of all kids in high school and college.

Teaching kids how to be good citizens is one of the missions of our public schools, this is just an extension of that.

How about the kids that dont go to college? And this is not about if its a "good idea" or not. Yes community service is a great idea until its mandated. The government has no right to make anyone work without pay.

nation-x 11-09-2008 11:25 AM

I think you idiots need to learn how to read... nice try editing what the thing actually says... FAIL

Here is what it actually says...
Quote:

Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free.
