That's what you get for ignoring the 4 other people who called me a prick before seeing 'make money' and clicking a link.

You got me super early and prior to them.
It was prickish.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 01-14-2009 08:59 PM

Indeed it was prickish, but someone snagged me the other day with it, and I figured what better place to drop a random shit link than here.

Imean really people, clicking random links in random threads? I thought we all knew better by now.

/me shrugs...

That is why I did not go all postal. Yet now I will not be clicking your links anymore. I typically trust most people in threads that are not goof off topics etc.

Fair enough.

Note for everyone here, I rarely if ever post anything of value on GFY anymore...

now back to thread issue.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 01-14-2009 09:34 PM

I've always just ignored the threads myself, it never seemed like much of an issue. I admit years ago there were days where I thought I might pocket some extra cash for nothing, but never did I ever win a contest. I tossed the idea out the window and have rarely opened a contest thread since.

I think the simplest way to curb the contest threads is to change the rule so that those entering to win do indeed need to be an active affiliate, or to limit the max number of posts/prices per thread.

CDSmith 01-14-2009 09:49 PM

Cull all the fake nicks and anons and bots and you'd go a long way in fixing the contest issue. I see nothing wrong with a program rewarding it's affiliates with a contest, but it's the amount of cheating that goes on that really causes the most annoyance for everyone, and by everyone I mean everyone on the board.

Problem is rules aren't always enforced, especially by the programs themselves who run the contests. If the rule says "only 20 posts per day PER WEBMASTER" and idiot bots are putting up 100+ posts per day and the rule isn't enforced, well... it's pretty obvious there's a problem in la la land.

munki 01-14-2009 09:51 PM

fiddy contest bitches...

rowan 01-14-2009 09:59 PM

Make a new rule defining a minimum average letter count per post and enforce it with bans. The contest whores whose 5,000 msgs consist of three word replies will trigger it immediately.

the point of the contest threads is to keep the thread continually bumped on the first page for branding.

they contest runners could care less if it's bots or space aliens bumping them as long as the thread is always on the first page.

They may snag some newbies but it doesn't take long to ignore contest threads... most of the time my brain just passes over the line showing a multi-page thread mentioning prizes or a sponsor... without really seeing it. :winkwink:

If they're paying .25 or .50 per post or offering cash prizes based on posting, the point is they should care. If they don't, they are paying the same cheater three or four times the prize money they deserve, sometimes more, which leaves the rest of the honest webmasters pissed off.

Playing by the rules becomes a detriment to one's chances of winning anything.

There has to be balance.

Another rye and coke and I'll be OFF balance.....:error

If only real webmasters were allowed to participate in contest threads, the threads would get buried on the 2nd page pretty quick.

You have a point there. :thumbsup

Can you do one without the other?

I thought only top stop banner programs could run contests.

It's easy to reprogram the bot to spit out a few more words per post. :upsidedow

Libertine 01-15-2009 06:13 AM

Good contest:

"For every sale you send during month X, you get a ticket in our raffle. The randomly chosen winner will receive $50k."

Bad contest:

"Every 73th post in this thread will get $10."
