They ate a diet VERY high in animal fats (whale blubber, fat from seals, etc), yet they had NO instances of heart disease, diabetes, obesity or any other degenerative diseases. Why? Becauese none of the meat they ate was processed. And they also ate a lot of fish too. Which is good for the heart.

Just remember that when westerns first went to live with Eskimos they got sicked and died because the diet is so unbalanced. They have grown used to it over the years and can tolerate it but by our standards it is very unhealthy.

I frankly prefer my food to be meat
about half of my friends are vegetarians and PETA is their cause...I say good for them
Everyone has a cause in life and if it's saving the animals...so be it

Personally I prefer to have that crocodile swimming in the bayous as a beautiful Louis Vuitton handbag or pair of pumps....I"m sure if he got the chance he'd rip me to shreds...

;)
I know it's not the most "popular" thing to say but hey...it's how I feel..
I respect the beliefs of other though and would never give a vegetarian/vegan/PETA person grief over it...
I expect them to leave me the fuck alone too though.....

I start to get mad when I see those PETA jerks throwing paint on people wearing fur or whatever...I think it's ridiculous and they should go to jail....

I agree 100% :thumbsup

Basically, I'm not a self righteous ass-hole about it. Also, I don't look like what most people think a vegetarian should look like since I lift weights about 5-6 days a week.

As for PETA, I understand why they do what they do but some of those people obviously get carried away. But you could say that about any cause.

I agree. I have been a vegetarian for years also and I am concerned about what I eat and that's it. Some of my friends are curious about the benfits or disadvanatages ands we have had answered their questions.

My 17 year old daughter became a vegetarian of her own choice (she lives with her Mum and Step Dad). First he verbally attacked me about not eating meat, and then verbally attacked my daughter and ridicule vegetarians to the point where my daughter was in tears and could not eat her dinner. He then commented he would eat meat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if he could. That's the sort of ignoramus unbalanced and aggressive monotone that is uncalled for.

FYI: My son is not a vegetarian and I respect his choices and love him for who he is! :thumbsup

Why do some meat eaters such as him feel the need to attack their own step children for being Vegetarians? Accept the choices your friends, family and loved ones make. It's their choice what they eat, it's their body, and their consequence.

Whether you eat meat or don't. Each to their own :2 cents:

it also strikes me as odd that some people want to save polar bears so badly when they would probably eat you for dinner if they had the chance

i mean i love animals as much as everyone else and im all for stopping cruel treatment and experiments on animals and stuff but you gotta draw the line somewhere..

its envy, because we have control over our body and what goes in and out of it.

I think I confused some in this thread judging by that there three or four of you who responded to my second post in thread. I was hoping someone would reply to the other thing I said, though, which I found more important.

In any case, I apologize for not making myself more clear. My point in the second post I made, is that one should stay away from processed food if they can.

What I neglected to mention is that red meat isn't good for you in general. Saturated fats, found in foods such as red meat, is directely linked to the same diseases I mentioned earlier. That is why it's recommended to eat white meat instead. However, that doesn't mean one should start eating white meat day and night either. Limiting your animal fats intake is best. I personally try to keep it to no more than a serving 3x a week. I can get the same vitamins found in meat (protein, calcium, iron, zinc, and vitamins B12 and D) through other foods like soy milk, nuts, vegetables, etc.

I know. Asparagus, broccoli and pumpkin never looked sexier! Makes me want to eat them more now.

I've been a vegetarian for 16 years, was vegan (no eggs or milk) for 5 of those but to be absolutely honest, I don't care what anyone else eats. It's a personal choice. If you want to eat nothing but stacks of steak every meal - go for it.

When people find out that I'm veggie, the cracks come up constantly. And I've heard them all. Believe me - they're not funny and a long-time vegetarian has probably heard every one of them. I take it in good humor though. I eat what I like, you do the same.

To me, it's a matter of taste. I don't eat meat. Maybe you don't like brussel sprouts. C'est la vie.

I have been a vegetarian** for about a year and a half and I have never felt better. My diet is more balanced and I have had a lot more energy. I also lost 40 lbs after making the change. I turned vegetarian for health reasons, not because I don't believe in slaughter.

** I do eat sushi or cooked fish once or twice a week, so I'm not a full on veg. I do not think I will eat a land animal ever again, as the smell just doesn't appeal to me anymore. To each their own though!

Walrus 02-04-2009 06:22 PM

What kind of eggs do all you vegetarians eat? I just started eating Eggland's Best (Cage Free). They are the best tasting eggs I've ever had! Much more healthy for you too. Also, how are you getting your protein? You need 45 grams a day I believe.

missipissi 02-05-2009 09:36 AM

I eat quite a bit of beans in different meals (soybeans, kidney beans, lima beans), tvp, eggs from time to time, oatmeal, broccoli, cabbage & potatoes and nuts are some of my faves. Of course like many veggies I do eat the prepackaged fake meats as well.

I eat a few of those foods that you just listed. Some such as the beans I'm not doing very well with. I do drink Vanilla Soymilk each day, though. That is made from soybeans. I tried eating canned chili (Hormel, Bush's Best, and one other brand) and it tasted aweful. Maybe the only way to eat chili is to make your own. But I'm not that good at getting myself to do that. Especially with beans, you have to soak those overnight.

I scoop a half cup of Quaker Oatmeal as my first meal every day. Broccoli, I do have brocolli in the freezer, but I don't eat it as often as I should. It is one of the TOP 5 veggies to eat, too. This vegetable really fends off diseases like no other. Cabbage, no. Potatoes, I love them, but don't eat them as much as I should. They're another veggie that's really good for you..especially sweet potoatoes. Nuts, I get those every day. I always eat an ounce of almonds every day. Walnuts are the top of the chain for health when it comes to nuts, though. I just don't like the taste that much. I did try to get used to them once. I suppose I should try again.

No I don't. I admire them for sticking to their convictions. I try to be veg (for health reasons) for moderate stretches of time.

I actually like what PETA does for the most part. It's just that they go too far sometimes. The group does a great job at bringing attention to dog fighting and other act of cruelty.

You do not need to soak beans overnight to use them (dried). You could also just use canned beans if your inclined since you already mention eating Hormel chili. So by using canned beans you would be roughly 20 minutes tops away from chili. Cooking for yourself is not something that is that hard.
You mention eating Quaker oats, it does say a bit since you did feel inclined to drop the name brand. You did fail to mention the type of oats which is of much more significance especially since some oats are nothing more that pure roughage at best.
Not going to say it is bad but you should not need to be looking the freezer to find your vegetables that you consume. If you are eating enough of them in the first place you will find that fresh ones will make more since (few exceptions).
