It has now been 10 years since I was arrested for drunk driving (the 4th time) and finally checked myself into an alcohol addiction treatment center.

I was a FUCKING MESS. I drank to the point of blackout 4 or 5 times a week. I was drinking over 24 beers a day. I was drinking in the morning and even installed a new shower stall with a shelf so I could have a place to put my morning cocktail while I showered.

A very public and very humiliating arrest gave me that last kick in the ass I needed to get myself to a rehab center. I went through DT's for 4 days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delirium_tremens

One of the other patients died during my second week. I did not want to be that guy.

It has taken a lot of hard work. There have been some really shitty times and times I really wanted to take a drink and times I really wanted to just get drunk. Thankfully, there have been a lot of great times and good memories over the past 10 years and getting sober changed my life.

that is so amazing and impressive!
I hope you can inspire others who are have these same problems and show them that it can be done.
Awesome!

Sarah_Jayne 02-23-2009 07:00 AM

Thank you everyone!

It is amazing how many of us are in the business. I met one webmaster who told me he made his first contacts with other sober people in the biz because he saw my annual sobriety thread.

Curious to know, did you find God in AA? Seems like many recovering addicts do.

That is easy -- NO.

OldJeff 02-23-2009 11:19 AM

Congrats Chad, approaching 13 years myself.

Reading this thread we could have a genuine "Friends of Bill" section on GFY.

I kind of figured that'd be the case. I always wondered though what happens if you don't buy the god crap in rehab. I guess you just keep quiet about it and do the rest of the program?

Anyway, good on you. 10 years is a long time.

It isn't so much "God crap" as it is a Higher Power or a power greater than yourself. That can be anything you want it to be.

And Chad, thanks for at least once a year letting other people that may be sailing in your old sinking ship know that there is a life raft out there ;)
