I'd like to see any online referene to one of those accidents involving a smart car. Shouldn't be too hard, eh?

I mean I can find accident reports for my old town in Abbotsford, and thats' why more bumfuck than maple ridge.

MakingItPay 02-23-2009 04:34 PM

I bet they pry people off the pavement from riding motorcycles a whole lot more in Maple Ridge. I would love to see the statistics on injuries and deaths from Smart Car accidents in comparison to other vehicles as a percentage of cars on the road.

Do I want to get hit by another car? No. Not sure my Jeep wrangler is any safer. Only accident I have heard about here the guy flipped several times and walked away without a scratch. Bring on the stats.

youtube it

i'm pretty sure i'd rather be in a hummer then a smart car getting smacked by just about any car

and not true at all i've been hit at around 70mph and lived spun around 3 times into lanes of on coming traffic hit a guard rail slid over 200 ft hit the guard rail again and got out laughing, and that was in a mitsubishi 3000gt vr4

Are you serious they drove at 70 into a solid wall and went from 70 > 0 in less than a second, how can you even compare the two? Crashing like that your body just couldnt handle it whatever vehicle you are in.

Spunky 02-23-2009 05:13 PM

Hell no.I don't feel safe in that tin can

PAR 02-23-2009 05:25 PM

My only issue with the smart car is WHY THE FUCK DO THEY COME WITH PARK ASSIST...

I mean really why do you need it in a car like that.. I see them all the time and think who the hell cant part that thing..

teh ghey 02-23-2009 05:26 PM

I bet its great on gas

alias 02-23-2009 05:31 PM

I am surprised that smart car tipping has not taken off yet.. .

They're actually quite safe. Even when compared to SUVs - which are often very unsafe, ironically.

That doesnt look safe to me. Looks like whoever was in the smart car would have been turned into spaghetti.
They should have put a crash test dummy in it or something

Sosa 02-23-2009 05:37 PM

Someone here in town has one. No fucking way would I get in one of them.

the people in the smart car just had to sit and wait whilst they were driven down the motorway stuck on the front of the truck.

:)

When I used to move furniture for a living I rode in 18 wheelers a lot. One time when fully loaded we were rear ended and we never felt a damn thing, so that explains it.

But no, I'd never drive in one of those things.

I can't find anything on them actually in any town pertaining to an actual accident .. in the same breath there are very rare remarks regarding any "type" of the vehicle strangely enough .. 1 story in Germany regarding a walk away from a crash ..and conflicting stories about how they have a great safety rating for the size of car .. but that they are NOT good for taller or larger sized occupants .. (me) ..
I was not being a jerk first .. you were .. what I said is what I have been told by numerous guys in the fire dept .. both here and Burnaby ..

captain.g 02-23-2009 06:37 PM

The only reason I would buy one is to convert it like in this vid and because they can fit inside a cargo van.

phasic 02-23-2009 06:53 PM

Got a lot of customers at the grocery store driving these.. Dunno why?

pocketkangaroo 02-23-2009 07:04 PM

I think they'd be real handy in the city. You aren't driving too fast so the collision are minimal. They'd also be awesome for parking which is probably my biggest gripe with driving here in the first place.

God help one of them if they stop short in front of my wifes SUV whils she's texting/telling the kids to calmdown/calling her mother/racing to pilates etc.

It might be easier for your wife to just pay attention to the road since she would be charged with manslaughter in such a scenario and you'd probably lose your home in the civil lawsuit by the family.

annaliese 02-23-2009 07:08 PM

smart car is stupid looking but very safe. roll cage, steel. etc.

Yeah, I'd piss my pants trying to pass a truck.

MakingItPay 02-23-2009 07:29 PM

I take it on the highway, 18wheelers around. Never makes me scared. I would be willing to bet the people that say that they would be scared have never driven one. It drives a lot bigger than it looks. It weighs almost 2000lbs and is a solid little car. Don't be a pussy, get a smart car! None of us are getting out of this alive anyway. Now a motorcycle, that makes me scared. :)

MakingItPay 02-23-2009 07:39 PM

A few Reasons to own a smart car

1. 40 miles per gallon

2. Chicks love them. If I was single this car would get me laid more than a porsche ever did.

3. Mercedes makes it, so when you take it in for service you get treated like a king by the mercedes people.

4. It is a lot of FUN to drive and own.

:thumbsup

I like the car...but wow...only 40 miles per gallon? That's the best our "modern technology" can do? I had a 1971 VW bug that got 40 miles per gallon with a freakin' weber carb on it. lol

My 1973 MG that I sold right before I moved to Vegas a couple of months back got 30 miles per gallon...and I had a supercharger on it.

WTF? 40 miles per gallon is it? I figured it would be 60 mpg or something. Damn.

It was a series of tradeoffs for the company. The original got around 60. It was light as a feather and had a weaker engine. The new one had to be safe for the American Market (as you have seen by all the comments) . It is a straight gas engine, so unlike a prius that has a second electric motor this one only has one engine. But, I didn't get it for the gas mileage, I got it because it was so cool. :thumbsup

Well, isn't that what everybody is saying here? If anything happens in a smart car it's over? And owning it is also a rush. Drive one, then report back. :)

I wasn't being a jerk, I was calling you on the carpet. You are prone to "Tall stories" whenever you want to make a point, and I was asking for verification.

I can tell you I talked to Fire Fighters here in Florida who said that the smart car doesn't get into accidents because it just squeezes out of the way in the event of an accident. Of course I have ZERO proof to back that up, but just believe me, okay? Cause I'm saying it, so it must be true.
