I'll stick to my Mercedes.

I personally own a BMW motorcycle, a Ford SUV, a Toyota prius and a BMW car.

cant beat the BMW motorcycle.. or the Toyota Prius.
The Ford SUV is great for the price.. them BMW drives nice but otherwise is very expensive to maintain and often has mechanical issues.

but to get back to the jest of this.. i mean America perfected the automobile as a product to sell for the average citizen... end of story.
America has done this with many products, i would go as far as saying that America is number one in branding, merchandising and selling consumer goods...
America is just very good at making things exciting... i think it goes back to the American way of life..

This is an outrage! Republican are up in arms about who invented the automobile!

I think we have bigger issues to tackle.

I'll bookmark this thread when we have cleaned up the messed left Republican rule starting with Reagan.

mynameisjim 02-25-2009 12:27 PM

I caught that as well and it sounded bad.

You can spin it, but it was a mistake. The word "invented" has a specific meaning. America didn't invent the car. Any single qualifier like modern, or industry could have fixed it. Surprised they let that slide.

xmas13 02-25-2009 12:33 PM

Gore invented the internet, or so he said...

ADL Colin 02-25-2009 12:35 PM

McCain invented the blackberry .. but that's for another day.

Brujah 02-25-2009 12:41 PM

This is huge. This is important stuff. We can't let this slide!

That's true, but it's our simulation. It's the only simulation we've got.

Clearly the automobile wasn't invented in the US. That's obvious.

What I think Obama meant was we created the automobile industry. Americans took took to cars like bees to honey.

Lykos 02-25-2009 01:01 PM

Karl (Carl) Benz.

ha.

1968: the russians made them do it - and i don't count eastern germany as sovereign country anyways. :winkwink:

besides that it's a black day in history, i wonder what would have happened if the czech revolution would have succeeded

and the other two were definitely not started by Germany, the NATO made us participate. and only after huge discussions because german constitution does not allow military operations outside NATO territory and only for self defense. please note that we get bashed all the time because we try to stay out of the dangerous places. :upsidedow

i know we have not the greatest history regarding that, but thats why since 1949 (western) german laws are so extremely strict about participating in military conflicts.

and yes, we invented what we call nowadays "cars" :1orglaugh

Hmmm all this going back and forth about who invented what, no one bothered to look at the statement.

The paragraph begins with "As for our auto industry, everyone recognizes that years of bad decision-making and a global recession have pushed our automakers to the brink."

He was referring to the automobile industry, not who invented the very first steam/gas engine that didnt succeed in making it what it is today: An industry.

No, Obama's theme was that the US can improve in the production of things that it had originally invented. Right before he was discussing the auto industry he was discussing the production of solar technology and stated that the US "invented solar technology".

His full quote was "We know the country that harnesses the power of clean, renewable energy will lead the 21st century. And yet, it is China that has launched the largest effort in history to make their economy energy efficient. We invented solar technology, but we've fallen behind countries like Germany and Japan in producing it. New plug-in hybrids roll off our assembly lines, but they will run on batteries made in Korea."

So yes, one can discuss both the production of and invention of a technology all in one paragraph. That is exactly what Obama was doing.

And the full quote on the auto industry was:

"As for our auto industry, everyone recognizes that years of bad decision-making and a global recession have pushed our automakers to the brink. We should not, and will not, protect them from their own bad practices. But we are committed to the goal of a re-tooled, re-imagined auto industry that can compete and win. Millions of jobs depend on it. Scores of communities depend on it. And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it.

In both cases he is stating that the US invented a technology but needs to improve in its production.

I never said Obama was wrong. I said "There are multiple answers to who invented the automobile" and pointed out that different people have different answers for who invented a wide number of technologies such as the automobile, radio and television. just witness the many different answers in this thread. All of those are fascinating topics in my opinion. I would bet most Americans think Ford invented the automobile where as our only Library of Congress thinks the best answer is Karl Benz.

You can see the Great Wall of China from outer space. Christopher Columbus was the first to discover America. The US wins the war of 1812.

Good ones. What would be "outer space"? I think you can see the Wall from the shuttle.

I myself find the history of technology to be fascinating. You're free not to participate.

There are multiple answers to who invented the automobile and it is interesting to see what people think about it. I would think most Americans would say Ford and most Europeans would say Benz.

Same with the history of the radio which has such interesting answers as Marconi, Tesla and Alexander Popov. Most know Marconi, some know Tesla, hardly anyone knows Popov outside of Eastern Europe. All legitimate answers in my opinion.

And how about TV? Is it Farnsworth or Zworykin?

And the WWW? Would you go with Tim Berners-Lee or Al Gore?!

I thought the french invented the automobile but the first model didn't have steering.
