I try my hardest not to let my addiction affect people around me, no matter what the addiction.

To generalize and group all smokers together as assholes whole walk next to you on the street and blow smoke in your face is retarded.

For one thing, I don't go outdoors!

If you are near a smoker, move away. If my smoke is bothering someone, and they ask me to move, I'll gladly move or put it out.

Its not smokers you have a problem with, its people with no consideration for others...

People bitch all the time, why is this any different? Just because you don't like smokers/smoking? You are doing the exact same thing the smokers are doing, bitching about smokers bitching about the price of a product.

If you don't like it, ignore it, use that energy towards something useful and the world will be a better place.

Yeah, I'd ignore it no problem if you fuckers stopped blowing out your toxic shit every fucking where - elevators, bars, restaurants, cars, nightclubs, bathroom stalls, etc etc.

Ahh, my mistake, in Canada, you can't smoke in... elevators, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, bathroom stalls, legally.

I'm all for the banning of smoking in public areas.

notoldschool 03-21-2009 02:31 PM

I chain smoked from age 13 to 30. I fucking cant stand people who smoke anywhere near me. Its funny knowing how much discomfort I imposed on people around me during those years. Did i say I hate cigarette smokers?

Bored 03-21-2009 02:32 PM

I've been trying to quit this year multiple times. I told my g/f that I would be quit before the end of the month.... wish me luck :)

Yeah, it's illegal to smoke in public pretty much everywhere by now, but no one gives a shit about it.

some more thoughts on smoking:

Quote:

Parents who smoke often open a window or turn on a fan to clear the air for their children, but experts now have identified a related threat to children's health that isn't as easy to get rid of: third-hand smoke.

That's the term being used to describe the invisible yet toxic brew of gases and particles clinging to smokers' hair and clothing, not to mention cushions and carpeting, that lingers long after second-hand smoke has cleared from a room. The residue includes heavy metals, carcinogens and even radioactive materials that young children can get on their hands and ingest, especially if they're crawling or playing on the floor.

Doctors from MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston coined the term "third-hand smoke" to describe these chemicals in a new study that focused on the risks they pose to infants and children.

This has been debunked so many times it's tedious to even type this.
Society makes a net PROFIT on smokers and health care - smokers (on average) die earlier, so a majority of them aren't around for the most expensive years of their lives in terms of health care.

Such a redundant argument.

The taxes on cigarettes more than cover hospital costs.

If you're really worried about how *your* tax dollar is being spent, why not do a little investigating. I guarantee with a little digging you will find THOUSANDS of things that will piss you off far more than this...........:2 cents:

:2 cents:

The problem is that people who are so anti-smoking (more often than not, they're former smokers) don't want to see three simple facts.

1. It is de-facto national (and multi-national, for that matter) policy to eliminate smoking. I'm not arguing whether it's good or bad policy --- it's just policy. The smoking rate has plunged over the last 15 years, but that's not what they want, they want to eliminate it. (And I'm not getting into *why* it's de-facto national policy...but anyone with the patience and intelligence can just think about lobbying, then follow the money and understand it.)

2. But they don't have the political will (that is, the balls) to try to make it illegal. And the largely disingenuous anti-smoking PR campaign (have you seen the ads recently condemning the hand-out of free cigarettes on the street? there haven't been cigarette giveaways for YEARS.) has only cut the smoking rate, not eliminated smoking completely.

3. Therefore, the only other avenue is to continue to raise taxes on cigarettes (and "find" more revenue in the process). It has nothing to do with funding smokers' health care or anything else. (And it has nothing to do with the fact that cigarette taxes, and alcohol taxes, are the most regressive taxes in existence - yet still supported by champions of the poor.)

It's really not hard to understand. It's easy, it's "found" money - and those are two things politicians will gravitate to every time.

Who gives a fuck. As far as I'm concern they could have $10 a pack cigarettes. fuck em. It pisses me off seeing people on food stamps that smoke. Oh don't have money for food so I have to pay for you family to eat, but you have the cash for smokes?

Makes me glad I quit smoking.

I will say this though...if the taxes get too outrageous, to the point where only the very affluent can afford to smoke, then net tax collections on cigs are going to dwindle and the money for the programs those taxes fund will have to come from somewhere else (read: non smokers)

Also, the moral superiority alot of non-smokers display makes me want to fucking puke. Unless you ride a bike or walk to work and have solar panels on the roof of your house, you don't have a right to bitch about air pollution or second hand anything.
When you're willing to pay the same percentage increase in your electricity tax, gasoline tax, and every other thing you use or consume that somehow effects the public health then you can tell the smokers they deserve to pay $50 per carton.

Loki 03-21-2009 08:17 PM

I'm gonna chime in here, but from the looks of most of the posts in this thread no one will give a shit....

I'm a smoker, and I live in Michigan, What I get PISSED about when it comes to the smokes rising in cost, is what "we" were told years ago by our "Master" err I mean Gov. that with the price raising $1.00 of EVERY pack would go DIRECTLY to the public school system.

Now, I know a lot of you HATE to think lol, but try and follow this with me...

I smoke a pack a day give or take, With the Gov's claim I MYSELF put up over $300.00 per year to public schools. (NOT a high number I admit)

Now, as of 2005 there are over 10 Million people living in Michigan, lets lowball the shit out of that and say that a tiny ass 10% are avid smokers thats a total of: 1,000,000 (1 million) and I know for a fact that is a lowball number.

So if all of those people are smoking a pack a day, and putting out over $300.00 per year, then it's safe to say Michigan smokers are contributing over $300 million dollars a year to the Michigan public school systems.

AND YET, more and more schools here are being closed down due to "Lack Of Funding"

So I myself bitch about the rising costs cause point blank they lie their asses off on why and where the money will be going.

We have laws over here in the UK that stops people from smoking in public areas bars, resturants...ect. I am a non smoker and I think the way they are going about this is total bullshit. They should have given the bars, resturants. ect the option of either allowing smoking or the right to not allow smoking. this would have given both the smoker and non smoker the choice of either going into a bar that allows smoking or does not allow smoking. In the work place it should only be allowed in designated places.
Trying to force the smokers to give up by placing higher taxes on the cigs will not work.

Alcohol also causes deaths and puts a strain on the NHS so in effect they should do exactly the same thing which they have done to ciggs.

The trouble with our society is if the goverment introduces something which does not affect the way they themselves live, they dont give a shit, but if the goverment were to ban something that directly affects you, you would also be up in arms just like the smokers are.

Its not only smoking that causes health problems, cars and the particles from car tyres is far more toxic than ciggy smoke. I always laugh when I see joggers running down busy roads thinking they are keeping fit, when infact they are just inhaling more car fumes and rubber particles than the average guy walking down the road.

Here is some more info on other toxic air pollutents ..should we tax all of these to the hilt or should we just ban all of them ??? We are all to blame for health problems which we create by the way we live today, so give the smokers a break...

Ozone pollution is formed at ground level when hydrocarbons from motor vehicle exhaust and nitrogen oxides from industrial emissions react chemically in sunlight. The pollutant is distinct from ozone in the upper atmosphere, which is formed naturally and shields the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.

http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/news...eport_says.php

Exposure to city smog increases the risk of an early death, according to a new study of urban pollution and lung disease, which connects long-term ozone exposure with death for the first time.

Scientists who followed the progress of almost 450,000 people for 18 years found they were significantly more likely to die from lung disease if they lived in areas highly polluted by ground-level ozone.

Yep, seen this shit going on here..

My packs used to cost average of $4 per pack, then about a week or so ago they went up to $5.50, then on 4/1 they'll be $6.50 and I'm told that a new state tax is also going to be added in the coming months.

One state south of me though already and always has had high state taxes on them, so a pack was averaging around $8 before this, so I imagine now they're $10+ per pack..

Now, check this shit out..

Bagged tobacco for rolling.. my next door neighbor suggested I roll my own to save money.. he tells me he WAS spending around $12 per carton by buying 60z tobacco and a box of 200 filtered tubes, then he just uses his hand machine to make his own,.,

I figured I'd try this to save some $$ since I have been spending well over $100 per week on cigarettes alone for both myself and my wife.. I HATE the fucking things and want to quit so bad.. but when I try it drives me fucking insane :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

So, I go and buy a lb of tobacco.. not bad.. it was $17 and will make me 2 and 2/3 cartons.. add $9 for 600 filtered tubes.. so, $27 a carton...

But check this shit out.. that $17 bag will be $40 on 4/01.. $23 per pound tax!!!!

Once this bag is empty, fuck it.. I WILL FUCKING QUIT!!!!!! I have to.. I can't stand the shit anymore, but it's a fucking addiction and is difficult

Sure it does.
Studies show that for every X% tax increase on smokers, there is an X% drop in the number of people who smoke.

Sure you may know of people that would rather smoke than eat, that's actually pretty common in Africa I hear....but that doesn't change the truth of what I said about if they continue to raise the taxes, at some point they're going to start getting diminishing returns, and actually collect less in taxes every time they raise them.
Then someone else is going to have to pay for all the programs that tobacco taxes currently pay for. (read: non smokers)
