Turkey is not part of the EU for a bunch of reasons, mostly because of their dispute with Greece over partial occupation of the island of Cyprus, and their stance on capital punishment. To be admitted into the EU you can't have capital punishment.

Obama, don't be a turkey

I am a turk and I dont' care what the opinions on turkey entering the E.U are, it will happen eventually down the road, not because of a desire but a necessity. Currently there are millions of turks spread throughout Europe fulfilling jobs that a lot of the europeans won't touch. In germany alone there is 3 million turks, not a small number by any means. The nation of turkey is the biggest middle eastern ally to EU and the United states, it is a democracy, one which can be an example for other countries in the middle east to follow.
In the high season, Turkey is flooded with tourists from every single part of europe, it is the biggest tourist destination for all of europe due to the cheaper cost and exotic beautiful locations, turks welcome these people with open arms. I just don't see why people are so close minded about letting them in, how many former soviet union countries have become part of the EU? Countries that are half as developed as turkey politically and structurally? Either way it doesn't bother me, just don't like to see our people being bad mouthed by people that have never experienced it first hand. What really chaps my ass is that although we are not considered a european country or officially as part of the EU, we still have to play in the european grouping for the world cup games.....if we are going to be treated as dirt, why can't we play against the other garbage teams from the middle east? :) |
It is thanksfivvings already ruprick?

CE_Ardy it will not happen trust me.
The Greek will never allow it and there are more countries that will fight for it. |

US has always supported Turkey's bid into EU. Thats been the stated policity for the last 30 or so years
What makes this whole thing different now. Is powers that be in the EU when Turkey had a secular government had always rejected the idea of turkey in the EU. and now that Turkey has an Islamic gov is considering accepting Turkey. I know Europeans are all backwards. but this has nothing to do with Obama. Bush, Clinton, Raegon all supported Turkeys bid for EU. Turkey has always been one of the closest US allays in Nato and i believe even provided troops for either Korean war or the Viet Nam wars. |
