Selena, I know I don't know you but I'd like to present you with a great big "Go Fuck Yourself." I opened this thread and without even playing the video, knew what song it was and said to myself "Yep, I know that song" and then closed the thread and that was that. Then, an hour later, I found myself humming that fucking song in my head and now I can't get it out of there.

Damn you Selena......damn yooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!

:-)

I seem to recall "Hands Across America" was right around that time, was it not?

And I believe Nicole Ritchie was adopted. And I find it sad that I even know that. :-)

Tom_PM 04-23-2009 08:19 AM

I remember when the jackson 5 were all black with afro's.

Yes, there were. The boy watched that, and I was having him identify the singers that he knew. He didn't do too bad for a 13 year old. He did comment that some of the singers were awesome in it.

Tee hee. Thank you. That may be my first official GFY. :winkwink: If it makes you feel better, then damned thing has been stuck in my head too. It's looping up there with that "I Dreamed a Dream" song. And yep, Hands Across America was right around then too.

Me too. I can remember watching them on what was probably American Bandstand, singing "ABC". Michael was very young then.

Thanks everyone who remembers. Sometimes I feel like the dinosaur of the board. Now I know there are at least a few more of my kind around here. :1orglaugh

I can't tell you how into We Are The World I was when it came out. I taped the HBO special about the making of when it came out and then put Willy Wonka right afterwards. That was probably the most repeat watched tape in my house growing up.

Sarah_Jayne 04-24-2009 07:04 AM

Also..as cheesy as it is now. Watch that and count the number of them that are still around and making music. You couldn't do a song like that now and have the same results this many years later. Same goes for British version (which as the base was a better song anyway).

Raf1 04-24-2009 07:19 AM

haven't seen that in quite a long time.

Kiwigirl 04-24-2009 07:48 AM

YIKES - thanks for the flashback....I guess that makes me old. LOL
TGIF

Marcus Aurelius 04-24-2009 08:15 AM

I remember it alright, who could forget it. Michael Jackson actually looked human back then.

gornyhuy 04-24-2009 08:22 AM

I never heard of the Canadian version before! That's wild. SOOOO 80s.

Did anybody notice Paul Schaeffer in the 'big chorus' scenes... Hilarious.

I actually didn't know that Neil Young was a Canuck.

vidvicious 04-24-2009 08:29 AM

Damn ! I was hoping i wasn't old enough to remember this , but alas i am .. tears were not enough to forget this Xmas crap!

Raven 04-24-2009 10:34 AM

Old enough to remember Lionel Richie surprising us at Live Aid in Philly. Sigh.

Easton 04-24-2009 10:40 AM

LOL remember it? i think my vinyl single is still at my parents house in the basement!

todhunter 04-24-2009 10:47 AM

I remember that.

I wrote a game show question about it, I drive by the place where it was recorded two or three times a week (the old A&M Studios on La Brea near Sunset, originally built by Charlie Chaplin and now owned by the Jim Henson people) and I particularly remember that after the song was recorded and people were leaving, somebody offered Bruce Springsteen a security escort to his car (he had parked on the street) and he said, "No, thanks, I'll be all right."

Weird thing is, I don't feel a day over 40. :thumbsup

I remember it like yesterday.
Still get goosebumps from the first 2 videos whenever the next singer does his/her "thing".
And the other video deserve a place in the history of music too.

crockett 04-24-2009 11:20 AM

Yea, I remember them all.

jaycontentbandit 04-24-2009 12:54 PM

Now that I look back on it, that's really kind of weird... bunch of kids listening to Michael Jackson every day.......

That IS creepy lol.

When I was in kindergarten, one of the big TV kids' show hosts in our city, at the end of his show, had us all pick up our milk and toast President Eisenhower.

Now THAT'S old :(

MJ doesn't even look remotely like he looked there now. Wouldn't say he hasn't changed.

You beat me to it!!

$5 submissions 04-24-2009 04:13 PM

Yeah, I remember that. I'm a child of the 80s.

Sarah_Jayne 04-24-2009 04:14 PM

Two things about the video now that I watch it back:

#1 Always love that Dan Ackroyd was there and part of it.

#2 Lack of Madonna. Wonder what they deal was there because she was huge then.

Zebra 04-24-2009 04:16 PM

I remember the day when almost every radio station played the song all at the same time across the country. I remember switching from station to station and hearing that song.

kacy 04-24-2009 04:19 PM

Sadly, I am that old as well :(
