Yes when i sold 9 hard disk drivers i was kind a worried could buyer do unformat and see some of data.Safest would be to total wipeout of hard disk with darik boot eraser.

I use Acronis True Image to make backup images of my OS drive from time to time, and it also includes a HD wipe tool that's quite robust. If you don't want the data on a drive to be recoverable, you pick one of many encryption schemes, some have more passes than others, and they write/rewrite data to the drive with each pass.

The 1's and 0's someone mentioned above is an option I believe.

American: NAVSO P-5239-26 (MFM);
German: VSITR;
Russian: Russian Standard, GOST P50739-95.

Features and Benefits
Microsoft Vista Support ? Support for Microsoft's latest and most robust operating system to date.
Securely deletes all the data and partitions on a hard disk.
Full review of the results of hard disk wiping through built-in DiskViewer utility.
Extremely easy to use Windows XP-like wizard-driven interface.
Data Destruction Standards

Microsoft The Acronis Drive Cleanser application offers the destruction of confidential information on hard magnetic disks with the help of special algorithms.

National data destruction standards

These algorithms ensures compliance with most known national standards:

American: NAVSO P-5239-26 (MFM);
German: VSITR;

Predefined algorithms

Peter Gutmann's algorithm ? data is destroyed with 35 passes;
Bruce Schneier's algorithm ? data is destroyed with 7 passes.

Post pics but blur out the faces and you are ok :1orglaugh

Iron Fist 06-04-2009 05:32 AM

If i ever sell a computer, the hard disk is getting destroyed. When I upgraded, all my old hard disks I don't use anymore got the hammer time treatment and I took em apart and ripped out the physical disks inside. Who knows what personal and private information I had on them.. I had those drives for almost a decade, and I can't even remember everything I've stored on them.

Better to open the drive, pull out the platters, and make clocks out of them.
Or make a batch file to write a single solid block of 1's to fill the drive, followed by a solid block of 0's, and repeat until paranoia subsides.

Platters - into clocks - put on ebay = profit!

Vicious_B 06-04-2009 06:41 AM

It's not just computers. I had a friend that bought a couple of phones off of ebay and found all sorts of pictures, videos and information still stored on them.

I remember selling a phone - the first smartphones that had video capture on them

So I was sure I erased everything , all the contacts messages and when I sold it I was like FUCK

I forgot to erase several blowjob vids

rowan 06-05-2009 09:36 AM

Modern hard drives have a built in secure erase function.

http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/people/Hughes/SecureErase.shtml

If you're prepared to wait and do multiple passes on a large drive (with each pass potentially taking several hours) then you're probably too paranoid and would be better destroying it.
