I'm talking about the simple stuff: burgers, fries, tacos. I'd say it costs $1.50 to make a burger at home figuring in meat, bread, cheese, lettuce, tomato, condiments and you can buy one for a buck.

Besides that, the poorer an area is, the less access there is to grocery stores. If you have to shop at 7-11 for all the ingredients, that burger will cost you way more than $1.50 even.

People do have choices and I don't believe McDonalds is evil or anything like that. However, fast food does contribute to obesity one way or another and I think the lower your class level is, the harder you get hit.

true, but if you buy the meant and other stuff you can make way more than one burger. Plus, $1.50 for a burger at a McDonalds here does not get you much of a "meal". More like a small snack. A double big mac over here costs $5.19 +tax and that's alone.. No drink.. No fries.. So that's 1 burger when you can spent a little more to buy the meat and the buns (you more than likely already have the condiments at home) and make many burgers. So saying that fast food is cheaper than cooking at home is not entirely true.

I just got back from lunch at McDonalds. I've recently taken on the challenge of hopefully getting in the best shape of my life. It was painful going in there and watching one of my counterparts eat a quarter pounder meal while I forked away salad :(

PetMyKitty 06-30-2009 10:51 AM

if all the money you have for the day is $2 then you can buy 2 burgers off the dollar menu.

you can not buy meat, buns, etc for $2 from the grocery store

if you had $20 then the best value would be going to the store and getting all of the stuff you need. but if you only have a few bucks then you go to mcdonalds and get what you can get with your $2

96ukssob 06-30-2009 10:52 AM

I like their fish sandwhich, thats about the only thing i will eat there

Furious_Male 06-30-2009 11:03 AM

I cant think of a single item I like at McDonalds.

Tom_PM 06-30-2009 11:19 AM

If all you have is $2, you should be getting government cheese and LOTS of local, state and federal food aid! lol stop it!

Tom_PM 06-30-2009 11:24 AM

BTW, you think all these mcd customers in "poverty" areas dont have $100 shoes and cable fucking tv plus cell phones? just stop. It's am absolute CHOICE, not a feed lot they're caged into!

puuuullleasssssse

You could not buy meat or even pasta and veggies that would divide down to $2 per serving? I call bull. People can it just takes planning and isn't as easy. If you have a family of four and you all have a $2 burger that is $8. You can make a family meal from scratch for $8.

Tom_PM 06-30-2009 11:48 AM

$1.99 /lb beef at my store. Giant head of lettuce (bigger than my head) $1.29, pack of buns 99 cents, onion, tomato maybe a couple bucks bought loose.

Besides which, you know it's hard to *prevent* tomatoes from growing in most places on earth. Just slam a ripe one onto some dirt sometime in summer and wait. lol Even cheaper

bbm 06-30-2009 11:56 AM

I lovin it :)

I don't get the argument that it is cheaper than cooking for yourself. How much does a bunch of ground meat cost and how many meals could you get out of it even if you made your own burgers?

1 LB Ground Beef in the states is around $2 - $3, A pack of cheese is around $1 - $2.

1 LB of beef will produce about 4 burgers, cooking time anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.

4 Burgers X 20 minutes cooking - 10 minute clean up = Costs $3 - $5.

4 McDonalds double cheeseburgers X a three minute wait = $3.97

I have to agree that McDonalds is cheaper then cooking your own burgers, also I have to agree that poverty and obesity go hand in hand. Alot of people who can afford $4 for burgers from McDonalds cant affort the money and time it would take to make it themselves.

Sarah_Jayne 06-30-2009 12:10 PM

Can they afford the medical bills later? Make smaller burgers..don't make burgers..get veggies and make something else.

Tom_PM 06-30-2009 12:11 PM

No way, I just broke it down too from my last grocery receipt. Even if you forget ALL the leftover cheese, buns, tomato, onion and lettuce.. it's under $1 each burger.
Sure a pack of cheese might be another buck or so, but you're not using 30 slices over 4 burgers. You're using like 10 cents worth.

And dont forget the medical complications from eating too much shit food. Oh well, it's hard to convince people beyond the sticker price I guess.

Lunch time! (I have a serving of soup left from my 99 cent can. 49 cent lunch anyone? anyone?)

viki 06-30-2009 12:55 PM

I can see both sides to this. Even if McDonalds isn't cheaper, here's something you can't deny: poorer people eat more fast food. Poorer people are much more likely to be overweight. There's a connection, even if it is all their fault... whether it is cheaper, or it's just marketed to seem cheaper, or it's just more accessible.

Interesting points in this thread all around.

rowan 06-30-2009 12:58 PM

The per burger cost of making your own may be lower, but what if you don't need to make 6 of them? You can make anything in bulk to save money, but most people won't want to eat the same thing for 3 days in a row. :2 cents:

you cannot make it cheaper if you buy it at the store.. because the store doesn't sell grade D meat. If they did, then you could make it cheaper.

And ya, Yngwie and Blackmore do rule.. You should check out Yngwie's new cd Perpetual Flame. He now has the ex singer of Iced Earth. (Tim Owens)

I've been meaning to check that out. Been a fan since around 1982 (???) when I saw him at a small club in Hollywood (The Troubadour for you locals) with Ron Keel's 'Steeler.'

I've never been lucky enough to see him live, but I've been a fan since I was 13 (1986/87). I hope one day I can see him live.

Got 4 dbl Q pounder w cheese by going to two McDonalds and using two 2 for 1 "on any large sandwich" coupons.

So I bring home 4 of these. Thinking great deal. I'm thinking, "hell you can't even buy "beef" that cheap." :1orglaugh Ate one that day. Woke up feeling like shit. Ate another the next day. Felt really tired and shitty. Realized I did not get a good deal as I ended up throwing the last two out.

When you're a young man with a fast metabolism you can eat that stuff but there comes a time when it has to go. McD's is history. You can't rebuy something you threw out. :)

Also never go there right before closing. One time I did and got a dbl Q pnder w cheese. It tasted like nuclear oil. Bad shit man.

There is something not right in Denmark with McD's beef. Looks like beef. Tastes like beef. Gets inside you and wreaks havok.

Food Engineering is big business.

danielle_ftv 06-30-2009 10:38 PM

Mmmm...now I'm hungry. I love McDonald's fries and especially there egg and bacon McGriddle. I just can't seem to wake up in time to actually get one.

SomeCreep 06-30-2009 10:40 PM

Thinking of Mcdonalds food makes me almost want to vomit. Ugh.

Here's the band 'Steeler' he was with when I saw him. His first band in the U.S.

I've seen Blackmore every chance I've had over the last fifteen years - Beyond words what those two men can do to guitars. :thumbsup

I'm an average sized guy who enjoys the breakfast from time to time. :)

The food I had was just orgasmic for some reason... which is why people get addicted to it, unfortunately.

Sure, there's a thing as addiction but the people who get addicted to McDonald's food are hopeless anyway, so why bother. (Yes I don't like it too) :pimp

Maybe you'll get run over by a truck and the ignorance will stop..

What the fuck were you thinking buying McDondalds burgers as a week supply of food? You should run yourself into a wall..

wootpr0n 07-01-2009 12:27 AM

First of all, I say fuck you to all of the people who are suing McDonalds for making them fat asses. McDonalds puts its nutritional information on the wall and on the website, and on the fucking wrapper of the cheeseburger. So if you get fat because you eat there every day, then you have nobody to blame but yourself.

McDonald's is cheaper than cooking yourself. They use much lower quality ingredients. Plus, if you cook the food yourself, you have to account for the electricity/gasoline to operate the stove, and the water to wash your dishes, and the electricity to operate the lights in your kitchen and dining room (versus eating at McDonalds).

And most importantly, if you are a mother working 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet and you have to feed your children, you probably don't have time to cook, so McDonalds is the only option.

NetHorse 07-01-2009 12:34 AM

I fucking hate mcdonalds, and most fast food for that matter. However, everyone keeps talking about Mcgangbangs, makes me want to try one. It's a double cheeseburger and mcchicken combined.
