For the TKD side kick you lift your knee across your abdomen in front, lift your foot towards opponent, pivot on you back foot twisting your body sideways, then kick, more of a horizontal stomping motion. It's the most powerful kick, from what I've heard.

Karate side kick you are already side on to your opponent and just lift your leg and kick sideways.

sorry. I was talking about slideup kick. But still dont see how karate side kick would be any different. You rotate you him same way. what do you mean by "you are already side on to your opponent"

ok they're more similar than I thought. TKD might be more face on until the final kick. Karate you twist your body at the start. I just heard they were different from a friend who did both.

Some guys are so fast. Our instructor was a 4th dan, tall lanky bloke and I got to spa with him once, so I was in fighting position thinking I was ready, he was standing 2 meters away, a few seconds later I felt this gush of wind on my top lip and all I saw was him standing back where he was, I lost eye contact with him and he punched a centimetre in front of my mouth without me seeing anything. Another time we had free for all with about 20 white and yellow belts in one ring, and a black belt joined in and we were all trying to get him and he single handedly knocked us all around and no one could touch him. Don't ever pick a black belt! :)

I disagree on both these points. Machida has shown that good karate can do very well in a standing fight, BBJ rules the fight on the gound and both are important aspects to a great fighter (along with many other things) I think you will see the best MMA fighters training harder on the karate aspect of thier game in coming years.

Karate has so many different styles that to say karate is harsh is a huge generalization and incorrect. A style like Kyokushin is fairly harsh and a syle like Shotokan is very technical and again they both have there place.

I like MMA as much as anyone but alone it's no style, it takes the best of all fighting arts to make great fighters :2 cents:

exactly. MMA is not a style, its a mix of martial arts. You cant go and fight just wth TKD or BJJ skills alone... Most of those guys have multiple martial arts "belts" .
