They burn the flesh and bury the bones. They they pay respect to the bones either daily or yearly, that's up to them. By paying respect they are also bringing their "spirit" food or clothes, or whatever they think the spirit wants, sometimes they even takes smokes and beer. They call it "tambon."

Seriously, you guys need to travel more and leave the comforts of your own country or the tourist spots you may visit if you do travel abroad. There is a big world out there.

Oh, and the site it's on is fucked up to. The guy is not black, he is Thai, but dark skin, probably from North East Thailand from a region called Issan. It's where the bulk of the farmers from from and they are usually darker in color.

If you think this is fucked, you should see what they do to the body during the funeral parties in some areas. They pack them in ice, leave them in the home for all to see and people come and party there for a few days, all sleeping around the dead body. The funny thing is, it's illegal to play cards for money here so they use that as an excuse, meaning, gamblers know where all the funeral parties are and follow them around so they can play cards, because the cops NEVER raid a funeral party. Funny fuckers.

Just making sure that this is at the top of the next page...

They also put these little spirit houses up for them:

This is where they put offerings. Cola, smokes, food, clothes, flowers... whatever they think the spirits need. They TOTALLY believe this.

For some reason the scene from the movie City Slickers 2 comes to mind, when Phil suggests if he freezes to death, the others can eat him. :1orglaugh

Phil: In case we don't make it and I die first... eat me.
Mitch: Eat you? I don't even like talking to you on the phone.

NO they are not. They are just eating while they cut him up. Thais can eat and sleep anywhere. I've seen this done with my own eyes.

That doesn't just go for Thais. Once you're used to them, dead bodies just don't really spoil you appetite anymore.

To each thier own, guys. Culture and belief surpass normality and rational thought, ALWAYS.

We all mourn in our own acceptable way.

The pictures are far from being extreme although a little gory. If it's the worst you've seen then 'welcome to the Internet'.

Is it not also obvious what these guys are doing? DWB explained it fully but then it was obvious from the start to anyone with an ounce of intelligence and a knowledge that there's a world outside of their own shitty town.

CaptainHowdy 08-11-2009 05:55 PM

I'm not even slightly offended by those images...

I would too. I've eaten dog, cat, kangaroo, different snakes, goats, cows, lamb, yak, buffalo, all sorts of bugs... I'll take a bite out of anything, once.

Though, I prefer Subway and Papa Johns. :thumbsup

It seems pretty crazy, but I saw a documentary on cultures that clean the bones and some of them keep them in their houses for a time after the bones are cleaned. So while yes, defleshing isn't something we find comforting to look at I'm sure burning a body could look pretty brutal to other ultures, the end result isn't that different from cremains in an urn.

Personally I think people should spend more time with their dead. As creepy as that may sound to some, it really helps with closure. It seems in current American culture we just want to get it away from us, put it in a ziplock bag and bury it away. There's not alot of "honor" and "cherish" in that.

Was that one of the Taboo series installments? I watched the one where it was how different cultures honored their dead. They showed something similar to the ritual shown above, another ritual done by Aborigine's and then how death is handled in the USA. It was pretty interesting.
