I tip quite well, but I think it's getting a little out of control

Working in the right place can be a blast and very lucrative. I used to say my bar shifts were my social life only I was having fun and making money instead of blowing it. I would make between $1100 to $1250 a week and would have my whole day to do what I wanted with. Being a night person it was a great fit for me. |
I tip well if they deserve it. I don't tip well if they don't deserve it.
Tipping everyone the same amount regardless of service is communist! |

I tip the pizza guy $5 regardless of the bill. It always makes him / her smile

I'm a European and I don't understand the tipping thing at all. I rarely tip. Most of the time I give 0%. From time to time I do tip if I do like the service. But why pay for a poorly cooked meal, just because they bring my dinner on time? And what about EXTREMELY poorly drafted beer? Shood I pay the waiter, who just walks up and down to get my beer 30%? I rather pay the manager a decent amount for his food than the waiter.
If you want to get paid well, try some education or some decent work. |

Here is a TIP for you. Its FItty:thumbsup

i wouldnt say a damn thing if anyone ASKED me for a tip. Thats just ignorant, even when i was younger and worked in a restaurant i wouldnt ask, and when i do tip its more often than not 20%. Very rarely will they get less than that even if the service is terrible, just because we've all had our days its different when u've been in their shoes before

I don't think a waitress deserves a tip because they walked up and got a beer for you, but if they are friendly, the services is good, like boss said above, then I will tip. But most of the time, it's crap, and if the food is good, I generally just walk back to the kitchen, and hand some money to the cook and tell him to put it in his pocket. |

http://img129.imagevenue.com/loc563/..._122_563lo.JPG We were going to pay in the smallest coins we could gather up and just leave this mound of small coins. However, she came back and scared us into tipping her. LOL what a crazy one P.S Prague is absolutely beautiful |
For those that say that worked in the service industry, I feel you..Even though I only worked for 3 months in it (summer job at age 17)!
It was time for me to get a real job so I quit (they called me back because they liked how I worked). Went to college, started my career in the Technology industry. Completion of Goals. |

the "I don't believe in tipping" is btw a famous (obviously not famous enough) quote from "Reservoir Dogs" the movie quote does not reflect my tipping habits :winkwink: |
A waitress once came up to me I should tip at least 15%.
Well guess what? Maybe I didn't think the service was that good! |

I have had that happen a couple of times where the service was so bad I left no tip. They came out to the parking lot, or to the front entrance to ask if I had made a mistake. I said, "Nope. It is clear as day there is a big ZERO with a line through it on the tip line." For this one fuck, who was easily the worst server I had in some time, last summer... I told him when asked, "Here's the tip. Provide better service and make sure my meal does not take three hours". Then I walked off. |

Bingo, bartended in college and the same results... U knew a person by name, or by drink... drink in there preferred seat, ready before they sat down. Man I kinda miss those days... When regulars tipped you on your birthday and gave ya christmas presents. |
There's a Ghirardelli store here that serves ice cream. A woman there who's apparent job it is to bring people's orders to them when they're ready was constantly mentioning tips, asking for tips, giving people looks for not giving her a tip, etc. You're bringing us ICE CREAM...not even taking our order or anything, just bringing us the fucking ice cream! Naturally we didn't tip her because I had never seen anyone in say a Dairy Queen get tipped for it so she certainly wasn't entitled to one, and of course she gave us a nasty look on the way out. Fuck her though, that's ridiculous. Especially in these economic times, how can you demand tips from people for something that doesn't deserve a tip?

I don't really get it how tipping works in us. I do always tip about 15% when I am there, but do waiters actually keep the money?
Do they actually make 15% to 20% of their takings?? They would make more than the restaurant owner than! No restaurant owner has such a high margin after paying all the expenses on the end of the month. So it's better to be a waiter than the restaurant owner. What's the logic here?? |
A tip is not a tip if it's expected or demanded. Call it what it is. Socialized food delivery.

I think a good waiter at a decent establishment can make pretty decent money. A bad waiter, anywhere, is not going to make money. |
I tip very well... I start at 20% and I've tipped over 200% on occasion. I guess I'm the odd man out here but tip delivery guys as well for appliances/furniture/whatever... they seem to be the most grateful as I guess not many people do.
I do however lower my tips if I get bad service. I've left $0 tip before. However when I go some place and the service is outstanding I have no problem dropping a 50%- 100% tip. I know I'll be back there and servers remember the big tippers. Everywhere I'm a regular they know me by name. Places I really frequent usually know what I'm going to order. There's something to be said for walking in some place and having the server say, "your usual?". The server will usually hang out at my g/f and I's table for a bit and I know many of them really well. When I bought a house two separate waitresses got my g/f and I congratulations cards. People appreciate being tipped well as it's their livelihood. I know I'm financially better off than any server out there and I don't mind spreading the wealth. That's just part of who I am. |

The mailman gets paid $24+ an hour at least here in San Diego. Servers or waitresses get from $8 to $11 and depend on tips if they do a decent job. But if someone asked me for more money i would take it all back and walk out leaving nothing as that is not good service thats extortion :2 cents: |

Best tip you can give a waiter or waitress that gives horrible service is a penny -50 cents and make it known.... Not tipping at all, makes them think you forgot or your an asshole but more likely the 1st. Don't leave any doubt.
They will know they fucked up |

i would tell them to fuck off and take the 20.00 back. you don't owe someone a tip. its something you do out of kindness for good service as a way of saying "hey thanks, i appreciate it". otherwise, you have a menu and price list which details the extent of your financial obligations in the transaction.

if service was good I always tip 20% . if I see new kid thats having hard time, i give him 30% and tell him that hes doing good and it will come to him sooner or later. I walked my way into fine dining restaurant biz by lying my ass off that I waited tables before. That paid for my college! Graduated from college with ZERO loans.
