uh, there are endless paradises in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. i could post pics all day from the times i've spent there (been there twice, 2008 for 6 months, 2009 for 3 months). the northern region of Thailand is pure mountains and jungle, certainly not a slum lol... and the remote southern islands on the Adaman sea (west coast of Thailand) are the most beautiful ones i've ever seen (and i have traveled most of the world). watch "The Beach" to get a vague idea of what i'm talking about. i've actually been to that beach, it's actual name is Maya Bay, and it's just unbelievably gorgeous. i've camped there several times, it never gets old.

Bangkok is tons of fun, but i/we don't really like spending all that much time there, too dirty, too noisy, lots of scams. but once you put on the 1000 yard stare and learn how to deal with locals, it's actually pretty fun in small doses. hell, it's super fun.

regarding the dogs, yeah they are everywhere, even on the islands. cats too, jesus there are a lot of cats. we had a pack of dogs following us once on koh tao, they didn't attack, but they came very close. my cousin and i picked up thick tree branches and were ready for battle. the only other time i had trouble with dogs was on the island of koh lipe (about 1 hour north by boat from langkawi, malaysia)... we were a little drunk and you have to walk through the jungle to get back to the place were staying at (around an hour walk), forgot our headlamps so we were stumbling around in the dark, and took a wrong turn and ended up walking into a monk's monastery, the dog's went crazy, still, none of us (there were 4 of us) got bitten.

when i lived in downtown LA there was always dogs roaming the streets but never really bothered anyone, always kept to themselves. Occasionally would see a homeless person fight with one, but nothing bad.

People who were too stupid to kill something that bit a young boys face off should be killed themselves... for them to be angry and mad that you did something they should have had the human decency to do themselves, instead of thanking you, they should be killed for that, too. I'd kill half the neighborhood in a situation like that and I'm not just saying that. I'd do some block cleaning with a MAC-10 and an SKS (I prefer SKS to AK for some reason.. I smell a lot of Western elitism in this thread. If DWB is happy where he is, then everyone else shouldn't give him shit for deciding to live there. Any well travelled person will know that the world is an incredibly diverse place in which people live in vastly disparate conditions, and that "poor" does not always equal "terrible to live there".

When I was in Peru, I was surrounded by people who were amazingly poor, by our standards. Those same people happened to be the kindest, most wonderful people I have ever had the privelage of spending time with. Furthermore, they were humble and not totally enslaved by ambition for fortune like so many of us are, which made their lives much less stressful, and allowed them to focus on family and matters of the self much more.

That said, I'm sure there are many wonderful things about living in Thailand, or most any other country for that matter, and I wouldn't let the fact that a country has shitty neighborhoods (god knows the US has plenty too) deter one from appreciating all the culturally rich benefits that living abroad can have.

i am only guessing at this, but i think dwb is hanging out in the places he needs to hang out, for biz. there is so much amazing shit in Thailand, i can't even begin to give you a real sense of it. all of south east asia (for the most part), is just completely amazing. i mean, it's full-on mind blowing, different world than here. just one example, the rock climbing in Railay (west coast, near Phuket) is absolutely world class. super cool vibe there too. there is also this water cave you can swim into there during low tide, it's just crazy. i have a friend who has a sailboat in ko lipe, and we have gone out at night, and swam with the plankton, they all light up at night when you jump in the ocean, it's one of the top 3 coolest things i've ever done in my life.

The problem is, to get in and out of those slices of "heaven" you must drive down a road. Most times than not, locals live on those roads and those locals feed scraps to the dogs, bringing them out in large numbers. Sometimes those dogs bite people.

However, if you have ever left your home country, you would have known that many of the best places on earth have roads leading to them. :2 cents:

It's waaaaay on the outskirts of Pattaya, closer to Sattihip. It's a sleepy beach village.

Just like everywhere on earth, it has it's good and bad places. Dogs are everywhere here, so it's not unusual to come across them even in the most upscale areas.

People who say it's only a shit hole, have not gone outside the tourist areas and know nothing about what they speak of. It would be the equivalent of visiting the USA, only seeing Hollywood, then basing your entire view of the USA on that alone.
