these people come to your house because they are their to talk with you and spread "the word". i dont see how the guy was being an asshole? he was open to discussion and just because he has answers and knowledge he is some sort of asshole? he was just in turn trying to spread his "word".

i have these guys come to my house like every 2 weeks and i am even open to discussion but i let them know that I AM trying to convert THEM into my way of thinking.

The last time I spoke with them, I was still living with my parents (lol last week lol). I asked them, "Do you really think it would be wise to recruit me? There's only 144,000 going to heaven, and I'd just lessen your chances." That seemed to work without being horribly insulting or threatening.

Your view point is your view point...from my view point he had one goal and only one goal and that was to attempt to humiliate them/be an asshole.

You are correct...they are just lay people...passing out literature.

If you don't believe in the flying spaghetti monster you will burn in a lake of burning spaghetti sauce. LOL!

LAJ 09-08-2009 11:06 AM

Good stuff! Heh, I usually just point to my no-soliciting sign and shut the door in their faces. You can't argue with religious fanatics when it's all they have.

Simple way to stop them calling, is when they come to the door, as they launch into the 'script' just politely interrupt them with 'Look, Im really sorry, but I'm an apostate... I'm sure you understand'

Then you'll be marked on thier 'maps' and they wont call again. Job Done

Then I guess I just had pushy people. I have had them on my porch basically refusing to listen to me say I wasn't interested, just talked over me. I also had the same people come back over and over again ringing my doorbell insistently early Sunday mornings when I had worked until 4 am the night before. I tried polite, I tried not answering my door and then finally I told them I was going to let my dogs out on them. That finally stopped them.

Would YOU go around handing out literature on something you weren't knowledgeable or prepared to discuss?

As someone said above - those women weren't even remotely prepared to discuss religion even on a basic, superficial level. They were lemmings...parroting something someone else has fed them at their JW meetings.

Organized religion relies on people like that - drones devoted to the cause. Cast all logic and intelligent discussion aside - there's pamphlets to be handed out, dammit.

Seriously. Just do as I said. Say you are an apostate.

An apostate, in the terms of the witnesses, is someone who USED to be in 'The Truth' but has openly left the witnesses. Its in their code that an apostate is to be excommunicated by them.

So, by politely stating you are an apostate, it tells them that THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TALK WITH YOU, BY THEIR RULES...

Thats why they leave straight away, and make a note of your address, as an address NOT TO CALL ON... Because if they call, and talk to you, they are breaking thier own rules...

Simples :)

I grew up in an old school hardcore JW family (My step dad's mom was even one of their "144,000") and I've never heard that term used by them, not to say they don't use it, I've just never heard it.

As far as I remember (it's been 20+ years) the only people who were excommunicated where ones who broke serious JW rules, most of the ones I remember leaving the religion on their own (my mom and stepdad for example) were hounded even more and more often by them to come back.

With respect, I was told to use this approach by a former witness... IT WORKS.

One of the characteristics of a destructive religion is an enforced policy that requires the members to shun anyone who leaves or gets expelled from the religion. It is a common trait among esoteric movements that claim to be "the Truth." Members are required to sever association with even their own family members and relatives who leave.

The consequences of this harsh doctrinal policy are extreme, shattering family relationships and leaving the victims emotionally and spiritually devastated. Suicides or attempted suicides are not uncommon.
And also:

Quote:

"Do you shun former members?" The answer should have been "Yes." When you are disfellowshipped or disassociated, family ties are severed for life till you decide to go through the steps to return to this religion.

The sad thing here is that there IS no profile. Dawkin's said if best in his book "The God Delusion" that when a large group of people believe in something (spirits, voices, visions, etc.) it is called religion. But when individuals experience the same they are unbalanced or psychotic. It is religions ulitimate defense and they lady in the video even says it to that guy, You're crazy or What you're saying doesn't make sense.

You are what Dawkin's would call a fence sitter. You wouldn't denounce religion for fear of backlash but you wouldn't promote it either for the same reason.

That guy had every right to express his ideas, just like you claim the women did. It is unfortunate that a un-believer knew more about the bible than these two, who should know EVERYTHING about the bible. The one lady summed it up best when she excused her ignorance by saying I believe whatever god says. Sorry, the bible wasn't even written by god, but almighty and fallible man.

That is no different than any other form of blind faith. Look at Hitler, he passed out literature for his cause and beliefs and the end result was the death of some 6 million jews. But when you put 2,000 years behind the same type of ideology and turn a till then polytheistic world into a monotheistic world under 1 god you get present day religion.

Religion has used heresy, ethnic cleansing, differing beliefs, genocide, witch hunts, etc. to murder more people than any war ever fought.
