we are still around and like dean, jay and dave already pointed out.. having a few regular good clients pays the bills..(exclusive content)
i was shooting long before i joined gfy, matter fact there are plenty shooters never even been on gfy.
and they are not missing much btw, the majority of business i have, came from self marketing and word of mouth, not gfy...
very few serious programs looks to gfy to find shooters.

Issue with shooting for prices less than your equipment rents for? For one second does anyone think this applies in any other industry?

If I want some custom steel framework put together, do you think the guy I go to would turn down such a job because it is not worth as much as his wielder, his jigs, and assorted equipment? Will some plumber not show me some camera pictures of my pipes to show me why I should replace them, and then expect me to pay at least what his camera equipment and everything else rents for plus his labor? Think someone will not mow your lawn for less than what it costs to rent a mower?

I can understand commanding higher prices if you offer better quality than someone else. However often 1 shooter can give higher quality material with crap equipment versus another shooter who has the best of everything.

Most clients scream to high heaven when you mention 1500 for a hardcore scene, let alone 2500 USD.
Well lets break that down for a second shall we.....
Female model: 500-700
Male: 150-250
Pro makeup: 250+
Location: 250++
Misc cost: 200 (fedex, tapes, gas, lunch etc etc)
Gear: 100-200 (you have to figure in replacement costs as well)
Total: 1500-1600
And this is before you have even paid your staff....

Now ok that is for a top of the line production, but well most expect that now a days
Can be done cheaper but i doubt under 1250 for a great hardcore production.

Maybe I'm missing something that you're saying here... but if you OWN your shooting equipment, sure, you can take on cheap shoots because your costs are amortized over time. But if you don't own equipment and have to rent it, that adds a fixed cost to the nut you have to cover on every shoot.

If someone can cut 10 lawns in a day with a 1-day rental on the mower, then sure, 1 lawn doesn't have to cover the full cost. But if you have a 10x size monster lawn, then you gotta cover that cost.

Or are you saying that people who OWN the equipment should not base their rates on what equipment rental rates are? What am I not getting here?

i often feel gfy rightfully so, mostly caters to webmasters and their soft needs, such as design and programming, billing and hosting etc.
and sometimes content, but then mostly non-exclusive.

I feel you in that situation. Also as a past shooter and having to deal with equipment all of the time in different situations. Ageing your equipment is something you just have to do. It is not like equipment costs are not tax deductable, and major equipment can be depreciated.

Say the above was used plus the shooters fee's and the client paid 2k or whatever for the scene. The client just wanted 1 scene, standard fuck scene. Someone else asks can you also get a POV bj sceen for me when your done with that scene, how much do you charge then?
Add on, how should the buyer feel if he paid everything above for a scene and then the shooter adds on 3-4 other scenes for their own sites or whatever, how would you feel?


I checked and yes they were going to pay talent directly and pay for the location.

That's exactly what he is saying. If the content producer owns the core equipment needed to produce the scene, I don't really see what the price of renting the same equipment has to do with it. In the grand scheme of things, very rarely does a buyer care what the service providers equipment costs.

Though I do understand that a producer would not want to shoot a scene that is below a certain amount of money. That's perfectly understandable.

Well see this is why we can only be hired by the full day, i just do not have time for all the penny pinching....its bad for business.
My model is simple
1. Pay all fees related to the production day
2. We have a day fee!

So weather you want us to shoot a gangbang with 18 models or a HC+BJ it stays the same.....cost + our fee, simple.

Innovations/programming/service still being invested in.
Customer satisfaction about our site is spreading mouth 2 mouth, which is a good thing.
Long term is what counts for clients. Shady sites will dissapear in this market.

most content providers sell ALL their stuff (600 dvds + 4 trillion pictures) for a few bucks..

i get those mails on a daily basis, they are DESPERATE to sell content...

the problem is a lot of them just weren't very good anyways, so the market corrected itself and they quietly went back to their day jobs, while the talented guys signed more exclusive deals...

You are missing my point completely. You are not gonna spend $400 a day and get Dean Capture to work on exclusive content. Or get his quality of work for that price.

And im never gonna be on set with 2 $200 guys and be expected to shoot a DP scene with matching pics, edited video with 20 minutes of street pick up in a public place (risking arrest) and be expected to be at a Brazzers quality all for $400. Then you get mad at me because the guys u picked sucked ass and your location looks shity in stills??

On the low end Brazzers spends 6K per scene and it way shows. Their contract guys got huge dicks and get 1k+ per scene. in short they pay for quality and it shows in their final product.


I use top guys, top equipment, good props and choice locations and i get payed what i feel im worth or i wont work.



I still seem to be working a lot. So there are people that recognize my quality, my hard work to get that quality and my unique hardcore style. I guess Im doing something right.



I will put it in perspective. I made more today renting out my studio and lights than most people make shooting 2 scenes and working 12 hours a day to get that.:2 cents:

I don't shoot but I develop software and I can say the same thing. These days I stick to 2 - 3 clients who value my work knows why I cost more then a guy in 3rd world. Any one who emails me and want a VOD system for 99$ bucks :321GFY

No bullsit!! I am friends with their shooters. Shameless shoots stills for them 5 days a week. The produce about 60+ scenes a month. The pay for premium models, contract top guys, script writer, sound guy, good directors, top photogs, outfits,top locations, spend money on renting bowling allays, quickie markets and other random locations.


Pay a lot of girls for their 1st anals. Nikki Benz is getting 10k for her 1st. I shoot a lot and live in the Valley, i hear it all. The used to spend 8k and scaled back. If Shamless sees this thread he can back me up on this.

we are still doing ok - but for sure there have been better times. luckily for us we have some great exclusive clients that keep us going.

non-exclusive sales went down too, but i still refuse to devalue our content by giving it away for pennies like many others do. because it would be shooting in my own foot plus as a client i would feel cheated if i paid a fair price and the same stuff gets blown out 4 weeks later for 90% less.

and of course we are working on other ways of monetizing our content nowadays than just selling it to websites

This kind of says it all when it comes to being an independent producer. And the worse thing is I bet you would rather be shooting. Passion doesnt come from renting your shit out. It's nice to get but really is a fucked reality.

I guess in the end you can only bang your head against the wall so many times but it is usually that money that goes back into buying more equipment instead of paying everyday bills.
