Look at the size of American football players. Do you know how to calculate kinetic energy? Their size and speed is unmatched in any sport on the planet. The energy in which they collide easily breaks bones, hence all the padding. Rugby players are generally smaller. Less mass means less kinetic energy which means less potential for injury. The hits are infinitely less brutal and come from much smaller players which negates the need for padding.

btw - i usually call it "american egg tossing" and since i actually tried both personally, i have to say that Handball is much more brutal than "american football". and you'll never get me to play Rugby, there's a reason that nearly no player has his own teeth anymore

I played college football and currently play rugby in the US at the highest level of competition. :::golf clap:::

Anyway, professional football has harder impacts as people use their head as a weapon. When you go to tackle someone in football you don’t hold anything back. In rugby you tackle more with your shoulder on the ball carrier’s hip.

Both sports have adopted rules recently to project players. You can’t tackle above the shoulders in rugby and in football you can’t lead with the head above the shoulders.
A lot of the videos on youtube are showing either old school NFL and illegal rugby tackles.
