I know that makes me an asshole but the best thing that could happen to all the crackheads, alcoholics, etc.... is for them to die doing exactly what got them into the mess to begin with. They have already done harm to their liver that has severely lessened their lives. Why fucking stop now?

You're a fool.
Here's some more from my friend, he asked me to post:
"You don't understand addiction. I didn't ever decide to become addicted to drink.
I personally believe their are 3 types of people in this world when it comes to drink:
1) The tee total person who has no intention on ever drinking.
2) The social drinker who has the ability to stop whenever they want.
3) The addict. The person who changes after a drink and cant stop no matter what they do.
The problem is you don't know if you are an addict until you have one drink and by that stage you have just fucked yourself. Joe Bidden, the Vice President, knows that alcoholism runs in his family and hence has never had a drink in his life. Wise man.
If I could turn back the hands of time to when I first got drunk with my friends in the park at age 14 I would never have touched the stuff knowing what I know now.
The bottom of the line is this you don't know that you have a problem until it is to late.
The great part about the UK and Canada is that we have universal health care which picked me up and sorted me out for free. I now have a pretty good company paying a nice sum in tax and National Insurance to help others.

I was doing one to two bottles of vodka a day and cocaine. It is the harder drinks that cause DTs as beer you tend to throw up. Alcohol is one of the most physically addictive drugs in the world. Cocaine is just mentally addictive.
Anon"
And as for myself.. I am fortunate to have not had a substance abuse problem but it's definitely a slippery slope after growing up with alcoholism on both sides of the family. I did a week at Betty Ford in the 'friends and family' program to support a loved one and learned a tremendous amount there.
