Did I miss some medical report where smoking leads to a STROKE???

FWIW:

Phill had a blood clot damn near kill him not too long ago, he fought his way through that, AND if you were / are an avid watcher of the show then you would know that after his last near death venture he cut WAY BACK on the smoking.

Just a few weeks ago he suffered a stroke during an offload at St. Paul, he was found on the floor of his cabin and air lifted to a hospital in Anchorage Alaska.

Over the past week or so he WAS doing much better, sitting up, talking, moving about etc etc, and then last night... he was called back home.

To the people here blaming this on smoking... OK, I'm SURE it did not help his health... fuck NOTHING these guys do HELPS their health, but like I said, I for one have never heard about a link between smoking and a stroke.

just my 2 cents mind you.

RIP Phill you will be missed

obviously....

According to the U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, affecting upwards of 700,000 people each year. For smokers, the risk of stroke is nearly 2 1/2 times that of nonsmokers.

RIP Phil I think him and Sig are the best ones on DC and now 1 is gone to be with the big fisherman in the sky. Hopefully TLC/Disco will do a fitting tribute whenever the show starts up again.

just curious, do you smoke by any chance lol.

When you smoke your whole life and stop at age 53, the damage is pretty much done by then. Between the smoking, caffine ( i think he only drank redbull) and very little sleep, no nutritional food etc.... im surprised he made it to 54. I don't think you could do worst damage to your body if you tried. Sad to see him go though. Good show.

I'm not trying to be a dick here but (always a but lol) but the same can be said about damn near ANYTHING and it's link (or possible link) to cancer.

with that said, my biggest gripe was that most people in this thread were saying "Smoking killed him" now had he of died of CANCER, lung cancer for example, I think that would be a bit better assumption.

They (DC) are already filming for over a month now, and I'm sure they had cameras everywhere Phill was at every step of the way (when allowed) I did read that one of the DC cameramen helped Russ & the helivac people move Phill when they found him on the floor of his cabin :thumbsup It's good to know at least the DC people will be humans when needed unlike other 'reality show' crews.

I'm on the fence on how much they will actually show of this during the upcoming season, they showed ALL of Phill's blood clot, BUT don't forget no matter the cliffhangers each week, at the end of the day Phill was alive and well and resting / in recovery.

Fast forward to today, and pretty much anyone who watches the show know Phill has passed on, and airing that type of footage might not happen out of respect to the Harris family.

Now... DC DID to a tribute show to Billy Mays when he passed, so.. I would not be surprised to see some sort of "Best Of Phill" retrospective soon.

Easy guess lol, BUT, I do not buy commercial cigs, and only smoke natural shit, I know smoke is smoke and I'm not a chest thumping freak about it BUT the BIGGEST thing in cigs that hurt people is all the chems put into the leafs and papers, so I have a bit of a leg up on most smokers.

Also now damn near every pack of cigs you buy have the letters FSC on them meaning your now smoking EVA (carpet glue ingredient) aluminum, and something else, all meant to make your smokes safer :(

At any rate, like I said in my first quote above, I piped up because the bulk of the people here were being armchair docs and saying "that's what smoking does" etc etc.

The man should have been dead MANY times already, he fought and won many battles with his health, what you see on TV is literally just a "mashup" of 24 hours a day for weeks at a time, YES Phill was a smoker, YES smoking is bad for your health.

But at the end of the day, it wasn't lung cancer that killed him.
It wasn't emphysema that killed him
It wasn't the blood clot that went from his leg up his body through his heart

It was a brain attack.

As I said before RIP Phill

More natural selection at work.

Are you bloody stupid! :Oh crap

To give witness to all those creating a problem or less dignity for anyone that enjoys a ciggarette or a dangerous career.
My cousins lost their wonderful father, my uncle when they were in their teens. He was 43. Never smoked, hardly drunk, maybe a tipple at christmas, ran & kept fit, had fitness tests for work. Other guys die with grand age, smoking drinking & sitting around all day.

Leave your foul mouths at the door! :disgust

Heres to Captain Harris, a fantastic skipper! :thumbsup

We have been drinking his coffee from his coffee company, I hope they don't close that place down, I won't know where to get my coffee. :upsidedow

But show a man smoking like a chimney on TV and the masses blame the smoking for the stroke related death.

Seems to me that the #1 cause of death is..... Being Born!
