How are Ice Caps melting going to raise the ocean level?

Just asking.

I'm not a scientist and have no "side" in this battle. But don't the ice caps already float on the water? I do know that they have used pictures of polar bears floating away on pieces that became detached right?

So if it's already on the water...there will be no change in volume when the thing melts. At least that seems logical to me.

If I take a glass and fill it with ice cubes, and then fill it to the top with water...it isn't gonna overflow when the ice melts. It's the same volume.

Am I just being too simplistic with that line of thinking?

Or are they saying that when ice that is on land mass melts and goes into the ocean it will cause the ocean to rise?

Just asking because I've read people saying that when all these icebergs melt the ocean will rise. And icebergs are floating in the water already.

You're not taking into account the difference in density between fresh water and salt water. Typically an object immersed in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. However, freshwater is not as dense as saltwater, freshwater actually has greater volume than an equivalent weight of saltwater. Thus, when freshwater ice melts in the ocean, it contributes a greater volume of melt water than it originally displaced.

Hmm Urban spread, and a shit load of black pavement all over the planet probably has nothing to do with temps showing higher the last 30 to 100 years I suppose.

I'm pretty sure it's right... you're not crazy for thinking that though. You're not too far off base. Sea icebergs will not cause the level to rise, its fresh water in places like Antarctica and Greenland that would cause a sea level rise and if it all melted, the entire shape of our continents would be completely altered.

Well, if what was said about salt water vs. freshwater density is true then that is moot...but I still don't quite get that.

And again if I put ice cubes in a bowl of water and piled them up above the top of the bowl...but made sure they were floating, not sitting on the bottom of the bowl...then they could melt all away and the bowl would still not overflow

I'm just talkin' by the way. I know there is some big explanation. But I'm almost sure it has to be from ice melting on land mass and then making it's way to the ocean as opposed to an iceberg floating on the ocean melting.

Well it is aproximately 360 miles by 240 miles and 1/4 mile high. If it floats it may eventually melt. The problem is... why is it breaking off and melting? Why are there ravaging snow storms accross the USA and raining in Canada in the middle of winter? Why all the changes in climate & weather? These may seem like small insignificant changes, but they all add up to big ones. No charity can stop this, everyone has to just stop driving cars and burning fossil fuels that's all - no biggie!

There is actually land under the ice in Antarctica, which is what qualifies it as a continent.

If you actually read that article and listen to what the scientists say... you would know what caused it to break off. And you would know that global warming was NOT the cause. And nobody said this one was melting. The story is about it breaking off. It was the result of a collision in nature for those of you who don't want to really pay attention to that story.

Right... so... for millions of years since the volcanos formed land and superpoluted the whole planet - no-one burned fosil fuels until the last 100 years and now EVERYONE who drove a car did and that has zero cause and effect? Whether the Antarctic is melting at all is hard to tell when you google it up. Every other result contradicts the one before. lol

One says it is, the next says it isn't, the next says the melting is accelerating, the next one says the ice is GROWING.

When I was 3 years old and studied archeology and evolution they said the earth was 400 Million years old and man had been on it for a Million years although our history only dates back a few thousand years -what's up? The reason I said listen to this scientist is...HE is the one who has been studying this thing for a while and reported what happened. He and his team recorded the event when it happened. It is because global warming got turned into a political issue. So like anything else political you have a bunch of idiots on both sides that don't know what they are talking about and just repeat what their party wants them to believe or what they hear in the media.

Like you stated, its GLOBAL AVERAGE temp. rising like 1 or 2 degrees over many years. 95% of the people dont even understand that much, they think oh it snowed today in my town, pfff global warming is just a hoax.

I know its a repost but it still cracks me up..

Just do your part and go GREEN as much as possible (recycle, bike once in a while instead of car, use energy-saving light bulbs, insulate your home, low-flow toilets, etc) and quit worrying or arguing about whether global fucking warming "exists" or not.

Going greener in your life is simply smart, ignoring everything because you "don't believe in global warming" is stupid.

I'm not sure it exists either, but I do know the energy-saving things I've done over the past 15+ years has saved me tens of thousands of dollars, and continues to save me a ton of money every year.

I saw the picture of the 240 mile by 360 mile chunk of ice breaking away from Antarctica and all I said was "Uh-Oh... that's not good!" nuff said. I'll click the link and listen to yet another "Expert" in the morning. I got "The First 48" on DVR to watch.

I believe the earth is warming, i think humans have very little to do with this...
I think the volcano on hawaii probably puts out more toxic global warming bullshit in one day than us humans do in a week.. but hey..
