How are Ice Caps melting going to raise the ocean level?
Just asking. I'm not a scientist and have no "side" in this battle. But don't the ice caps already float on the water? I do know that they have used pictures of polar bears floating away on pieces that became detached right? So if it's already on the water...there will be no change in volume when the thing melts. At least that seems logical to me. If I take a glass and fill it with ice cubes, and then fill it to the top with water...it isn't gonna overflow when the ice melts. It's the same volume. Am I just being too simplistic with that line of thinking? Or are they saying that when ice that is on land mass melts and goes into the ocean it will cause the ocean to rise? Just asking because I've read people saying that when all these icebergs melt the ocean will rise. And icebergs are floating in the water already. |
Robbie you kidding right man?

I thought the swine flu was the major OH NOES!!! for this portion of the year. Are we back on Global warming again? :1orglaugh |
I noticed it got warmer since that fell in.

You're not taking into account the difference in density between fresh water and salt water. Typically an object immersed in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. However, freshwater is not as dense as saltwater, freshwater actually has greater volume than an equivalent weight of saltwater. Thus, when freshwater ice melts in the ocean, it contributes a greater volume of melt water than it originally displaced. |

Not to mention the fact that a good portion of that ice is above sea level. It's not just gonna stay in a pile when it melts.

tl;dr i wear swim trunks under everything... just in case. :pimp |

And again if I put ice cubes in a bowl of water and piled them up above the top of the bowl...but made sure they were floating, not sitting on the bottom of the bowl...then they could melt all away and the bowl would still not overflow I'm just talkin' by the way. I know there is some big explanation. But I'm almost sure it has to be from ice melting on land mass and then making it's way to the ocean as opposed to an iceberg floating on the ocean melting. |

Whether the Antarctic is melting at all is hard to tell when you google it up. Every other result contradicts the one before. lol One says it is, the next says it isn't, the next says the melting is accelerating, the next one says the ice is GROWING. How the hell are we supposed to know what is going on? I guess if you already have your mind made up on the subject it's helpful. But if a person just wanted to do some research with an open mind about it...it seems impossible. |
trust "scientists" on the payrolls of oil companies, moronic cranks with an internet connection and political point scorers.

Lets send Capt Paul Watson and his Whale Wars crew down there to glue it back in place.

Pollution yes is a problem but there are no decent studies out there that our pollution over the last 50 years has caused any ill effects on our weather. In fact when the dinosaurs were in there prime there was more CO2 In the atmosfer that there is now |

Like you stated, its GLOBAL AVERAGE temp. rising like 1 or 2 degrees over many years. 95% of the people dont even understand that much, they think oh it snowed today in my town, pfff global warming is just a hoax. I'm not saying i believe one way or the other, its just funny to hear people discredit something when they don't even understand what it is. |

This is what they said last year, and the year before that, and the year before. Twenty years ago they were talking about how we were gonna die from an ice age. Whatever. |

I know its a repost but it still cracks me up..

Just do your part and go GREEN as much as possible (recycle, bike once in a while instead of car, use energy-saving light bulbs, insulate your home, low-flow toilets, etc) and quit worrying or arguing about whether global fucking warming "exists" or not.
Going greener in your life is simply smart, ignoring everything because you "don't believe in global warming" is stupid. I'm not sure it exists either, but I do know the energy-saving things I've done over the past 15+ years has saved me tens of thousands of dollars, and continues to save me a ton of money every year. Global warming or not, if you're not going green you're an idiot. |
its the tubes fault

Stop driving. Period. You too Al Gore. Everything else is cool too but that's the biggest thing and it will never happen because the world has become lazy as fuck. If you don't believe in global warming then go hook up a tube to your exhaust pipe, put it in your mouth and come back in another life. Captain obvious enough for everyone? Meteors and volcanos and massive earthquakes and tidal waves and sunamis killed the dinosoars and almost everything else and created "The Ice Age". Sound familiar? Check out the news in the last 5 years. I don't even need to list the examples. I saw the picture of the 240 mile by 360 mile chunk of ice breaking away from Antarctica and all I said was "Uh-Oh... that's not good!" nuff said. I'll click the link and listen to yet another "Expert" in the morning. I got "The First 48" on DVR to watch. |
BRing it on
Here is an interesting short article.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...s-warming.html Why are the polar ice caps on mars melting as well? I believe the earth is warming, i think humans have very little to do with this... I think the volcano on hawaii probably puts out more toxic global warming bullshit in one day than us humans do in a week.. but hey.. They're gonna use it as another way to tax us.. its gonna be a carbon tax and its gonna suck.. dont fall for this game. |
