What most people seem to forget is that there are plenty of other devices just like this already on the market with more to come. Apple isn't changing anything, they're playing the same game as everyone else...they just bring the clout of being Apple to the game.

Most of the upcoming Android tablets have better specs than the iPad and cost about half as much.

An iPod Touch is $200. A bigass ipod touch is $500. In case you haven't found the calculator app on your Mac yet, that's 2.5 times more expensive. That, in my humble opinion, is bad.

You need to get something straight. I am not an Apple hater. I have 2 Macs and an iPod Touch, original iPod and have had an iPhone. I'm on my iMac right now.

A Mac is just a computer. No more, no less. There's nothing spectacular about it other than the marketing. The only thing I hate are the Apple fanboys who get a hard-on for everything their messiah (Steve Jobs) releases. I hate those that vehemently attack people who say anything negative about their precious hardware company.

I have used a Mac since day one in this business. I find that the people you mention above are those that just saved up their money and purchased their first Macbook. Those of us that have been using it long enough realize it's just a preference, nothing more...nothing less.

big whoop, it's 499 bucks. i'll play with it for 2 weeks to see what i can do with it and toss it in the corner with the rest of the electronics that go obsolete every week.

Ummm, what? Why do people spend hundreds on phones with all the bells and whistles when a Razr phone from the 90s would do? Why do people spend $60k on a BMW when you can get a Honda for $20k? It's *all* about the deals with every major book publisher and magazine publisher out there. This is a device for consuming content.

There are lots of mp3 players out there, none have the iTunes Music Store.
There are lots of phones out there, none have the App Store.
There are lots of tablets out there, none have the deals with the publishers, PLUS the refined app store.

So you expect something with a screen that is 5 times bigger to cost how much more? The same? Not sure of your argument here? Something bigger should cost the same?

Apple wasn't the first to create an app store. Windows Mobile phones and Palm phones have had them for a while.

There are plenty of other outlets for music and video and books as well.

the tablet idea isn't anything new, but i'll give it to apple that they are always the ones pushing technology to the masses first. it was an inevitable progression. it WILL be popular. i just can't wait for the day that the tech is so cheap that absolutely everything is a giant interactive touchpad. mix that in with, or surpass it with some advanced finger or motion tracking. get some 3d and holograph smashed in there. future world muthafucka.

i do admire apple for its business & marketing accumen. I wish i could charge $500 bucks to a fanbase that will buy anything from me at any price. So what that the device can't print, can manage pics but can't take any. It would seem a rational consumer will wait, let the price come down & the missing features get added. But some people need to fuel their materialistic narcissism. At least BMW builds a better car, unlike apple, who just builds a prettier package.

The problem with the mobile industry 5 years ago was it was run by telecoms people... the only input IT people had was into the billing systems..

Apple's approach was a breath of fresh air into the business.... because even the mighty sony struggled with the personnel and culture they found when they took over ericksson...

Newsflash: Android users are generally more tech savvy. They (we) are always looking for opensource and freeware crap. It is unlikely that we will ever plunk down $1.99 en masse for a fart app. The Android Marketplace will never, ever make as much money as Apple's App Store, not even when Android devices outnumber iPhones and iPads.
