Of course, remaining alive under the Taliban didn't have all that much to do with freedom either.

Here are just some of the laws they instituted...

1) Restricting women's freedom:

• Complete ban on women's work outside the home, which also applies to female teachers, engineers and most professionals. Only a few female doctors and nurses are allowed to work in some hospitals in Kabul.
• Ban on women studying at schools, universities or any other educational institution.
• Whipping, beating and verbal abuse of women not clothed in accordance with Taliban rules.
• Public stoning of women accused of having sex outside marriage. (A number of lovers are stoned to death under this rule).
• Ban on women laughing loudly. (No stranger should hear a woman's voice).
• Ban on women gathering for festive occasions or for any recreational purpose.
• Ban on women's pictures printed in newspapers and books, or hung on the walls of houses and shops.

Being male and living under a Taliban government isn't exactly all that great either...

2) Restricting everyone's freedom:

• Banned listening to music, not only for women but men as well.
• Banned the watching of movies, television and videos, for everyone.
• Ordered that all people with non-Islamic names change them to Islamic ones.
• Ban on certain games including kite flying which is "un-Islamic" according to Taliban.
• Anyone who carries objectionable literature will be executed.
• Anyone who converts from Islam to any other religion will be executed.
• Non-Muslim minorities must attach a distinct badge or stitch a yellow cloth onto their dress to be differentiated from the majority Muslim population. Much like the Nazis with Jews.
• Banned the use of the internet by both ordinary Afghans and foreigners.

I used to carry a couple extra AK's in my hummer just in case there was a "mistake" just drop it down next to the dead body, take a few pics, case closed, move on to the next soon to be dead Iraqi...

If you have ever picked up your buddies with their guts blown out from an IED then you would understand.. I would do it all over again if I had to...! (Iraq 2004 to 2006)

Iraq is a different deal. Saddam was a prick but he was a secular prick and the average Iraqi was a hell of a lot better off when he was running things than they are now.
