I copied and saved pix of your Dobie to remind me to get another one. Beautiful dogs. Very smart too. And yeah, I told myself I wouldn't get another dog for a while and only lasted 3 weeks. I got a Mystery Mix & a French Mastif/Australian Shephard.

Sorry to hear about this, we lost our dog a few months ago after having him for 19 years. Very sad :(

Mostly sorry to hear that it was going to cost so much, but to be honest, most of the time the amount of money you can spend at the vets, you shall find that the animal shall mostly die as it can be a money sport which is a shame :Oh crap

riggo - my condolences to you and your family. I've had my black lab for 14 years and he's on his way out... I can just see myself in the back yard, tears streaming down my face digging his grave....

thanks guys...my girlfriend wants another dog but my daughter is not so anxious to get another....I am sure she is afraid of getting close to another dog and having something like this happen again. I know if we get one she will feel different but right now she is still morning her dog :(

yeah i think right now she just needs a little time...i am sure we will get another puppy but it will depend on when she is ready for another one

Very sorry to hear that riggo.
One of our dogs died last year of leukemia. We were offered the choice to pay for chemo, but were told it would only offer a slim chance and would be distressing for him.
But our dog decided for us. He died peacefully within days of the diagnosis.
We all still miss him a lot. He was a real character.

Take your time getting that puppy. You all need to mourn your dog first.

Sorry to hear that. And 8 years is not terribly old. Kidney failure means it could have been something the dog ate. Lots of people don't realzie how common things we eat are deadly to dogs and cats. Some don't kill right away but build up toxicity over time.

Avocados
They contain a toxic component called persin, which can damage heart, lung and other tissue in many animals. This fruit is very toxic to dogs, cats and most animals.

Nuts
Walnuts and macadamia nuts are especially toxic. Effects can be anything from vomiting to paralysis to death. Within 12 hours of eating the nuts, pets start to develop symptoms such as an inability to stand or walk, vomiting, hyperthermia (elevated body temperature), weakness, and an elevated heart rate. These symptoms can be even worse if your dog eats some chocolate with the nuts. The effect can cause kidney failure, often leading to death.

Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine, which can kill your pet if eaten in large quantities. Dark and unsweetened baking chocolates are especially dangerous. Giving your pup a piece of chocolate cake or even letting him lick the chocolate icing on the cake could cause him to become ill. Theobromine can also cause a dog or cat's heart to beat very rapidly or irregularly, which could result in death if the pet is exercising or overly active.

Candy
Candy or anything containing Xylitol (a common sweetener found in some diet products) can cause a sudden drop in an animal's blood sugar, loss of coordination and seizures. If left untreated, the animal could die.


Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins can lead to kidney failure in dogs. As little as a single serving of raisins can kill them. And the effects are cumulative, which means that even if a dog eats just one or two grapes or raisins regularly, the toxin that builds in his system will eventually kill him.

Onions
Onions are another common food that can be highly toxic to pets. They can destroy an animal's red blood cells and lead to anemia, weakness and breathing difficulties. Their effects are also cumulative over time.

We have two dogs, one upstairs barking right now, and this thread is a reminder of how precious they are. They are our "kids" and our family. Off to spend some time with the little brats now! I never take a dogs' unconditional love for granted. I don't know you, but hope for the best for you and your family. Can't imagine going through what you are but eventually we will, and I am not looking forward to that day.

Reminds me of when one of our dogs got a hold of two Bounty chocolate bars and got through 1 1/2 of them. I panicked, called the vet, and she kind of laughed and said it was not real or pure chocolate, and the dog would be fine.

We are talking a 3 1/2 pound Yorkie. lol

The vet was right, and all we had to do was clean up about 30 pukes or so.

Regardless, your post reminded me of the Bounty Bar incident, and I had a chuckle. Scary at the time, but our girl is still alive and kicking, and still a brat. lol

But human food has no place in a dogs diet, especially the toy dogs. Thanks for posting that and reminding me what a dog should or should not eat. That is good info. :2 cents:

yeah 8 years isnt a very long time...its just weird how he got sick all the sudden and things happened so fast.....we had no clue he was even having problems
