This valve costs $500,000, and was not in place because they didn't want to buy one. Now they are dumping millions into a cleanup.

Confirm/deny this valve?

where did you hear this?

Its been confirmed.

Early investigations have revealed that BP did not bother to install -- and that U.S. regulations do not require -- a backup device to provide another layer of protection in case the "fail-safe" shutoff valve failed (which is exactly what happened). Brazil requires such a device, and oil companies like Shell install it routinely even in the U.S. BP didn't because, at $500,000, it was "too expensive."

it doensnt happen often so revel in it my friend...

and stay thirsty...

.

my point was not to prove you wrong, and you were correct the initial reports came out said that BP did not own the rigs and therfore it was questionable if they were responsible.

it seems they (BP) signed a land lease agreement with the federal government which clearly states any clean up cost etc is for the account of the leaseholder.

It's true about the $500K valve preventing all of this. Every other country in the world requires this by law, but the oil industry was able to convince our government it was not worth the money.

That just shows how short sighted and greedy these companies are. Even from a basic business prospective, it makes sense to add that valve. First of all, if the oil industry is powerful enough to make the government not require it, they could probably have asked for tax breaks to cover the total installation cost. Second, if they are installed and there is still a leak, it gives them a very good argument in court as to why they shouldn't be held liable for the full amount of the spill.

BP should pay for the whole fucking spill. They could have stopped this shit. In any case get ready for $5+ gas and the beginning of the next depression.

If only they could filter the oil from the sea water then they could save it all, but from what I understand as soon as sea water hits oil it cant be turned back or filtered out. That correct?

dav3 05-04-2010 04:21 PM

Fucking BP.

I sure as fuck hope they are paying for this whole fucking thing, since it's their fucking fault for not installing that extra valve or whatever.
