Bottled water has to be one of the biggest ripoffs

ErectMedia 06-10-2010 12:01 PM

printer ink definitely, the one I got now isn't so bad but still a ripoff, If a chick told me she worked at the hp factory I would probably marry her for the unlimited supply of inkage.

Razor blades! ARGH! I picked up a 21 pack of Mach 3 blades at Costco and they were a good price, but my man and I swear they aren't as sharp or dull faster than the smaller packs from regular stores. :( Weird.

As for printer ink, we bought a little black n white laser two years ago and have only had to change the toner once. You couldn't pay me enough to go back to ink.

candyflip 06-10-2010 12:20 PM

Milk...if you live in Florida. When we were on vacation a few months back, a gallon of milk was almost $5.

I pay about $1.80 a gallon here in Western NY.

ProG 06-10-2010 12:27 PM

It's actually better to buy a new razor than to buy the replacement blades. The blades that come with a razor are much sharper and last longer than the replacements. This is by design.. since they make a lot more money off the replacement blades.

I also use a (brother) laser black and white, it's over 2 years old and the toner has never been replaced.

I pay about $6/gallon for Horizon organic. You couldn't pay me to drink supermarket brand milk.

PornMD 06-10-2010 12:30 PM

Razor blades aren't so bad to me, probably because I use the fuck out of each one I get til it practically stops being able to shave at all.

Printer ink is god awful though, and milk sucks too given I live alone and 2 half-gallons is just too much for me to get at a time in order to get the "discount" most stores give on it.

Batteries can be kind of ridiculous too if you use enough of them, though I learned long ago to go with rechargeables.

Gas and paper plates are pretty bad too.

Holy crap. I pay $2.50 a litre for 1% non-organic milk.

Shipping prices. And not on ebay or amazon. I'm talking about shipping prices for car parts located in Japan. My car is imported from there, and was only ever officially sold there, so 95% of the parts, both oem and aftermarket, have to come from there. I was going to pick up a set of used aftermarket wheels with sticky tires to use for track days. $361.00 USD (cheaper than anything here). After shipping? $981.00 USD.

I'm fucking sorry, but if the shipping is more expensive than the product, you can suck my balls.

notime 06-10-2010 01:17 PM

Garages who repair your car and where you can never really check the hours/materials or if there even was a problem in the first place.

One I caught 5 years ago invoicing me something that was impossible, since I was there. They invoiced a "test drive" for $125, while I drove the car in the garage and was there all the time when they put on 2 new tires. I also drove it out of the garage. When I called them they said I was mistaken, sure. When I explained what happened and they DID check, he apologised and ask me "Not to tell others" this happened.....

brentbacardi 06-10-2010 01:54 PM

YOU KNOW PRINTER INK AND RAZOR BLADES ARE RIP OFFS WHEN THEY LOCK THEM BOTH IN MANY STORES BECAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE WOULD STEAL THEM!!!! and they arent even that expensive, the leave $100 coats on racks because people are like "oh thats a nice coat, its worth a hundred bucks" but the razors and printer ink people are like "fuck that stupid company, they deserve to get shit stolen from them" LOL

EliteWebmaster 06-10-2010 06:31 PM

Replacement razors are the worst. I went down to the store the other day to pick up those Shick Mach 3 Turbo replacements. And they cost $17 for a pack of 5. I don't have a problem paying for it. But I still feel like I got anal raped by Shick everytime I do so.

Same with Printer Ink. But there is a solution, you could go to those refill stations in the mall to get your printer ink refilled. Slightly cheaper I have heard, never tried them. I don't have the patience to wait for my ink to be refilled. Time is money so I end up going to Staples to buy new ink.

It's the 2 things you can't go without. And taxes :1orglaugh

Ron Bennett 06-10-2010 07:40 PM

Name brand ink is typically very good quality, but simply way over priced.

Razor blades are by far more a rip off than ink, since they're way over priced and are designed to wear out very rapidly...

Ever wonder why new blades, even with minimal use, quickly dull ... much of the reason is water. Dry razor blades immediately after each use and they'll last longer.

Electric razor I've had for 8 years and I buy generic ink replacements off of ebay in bulk.. Life is good there.. :thumbsup Biggest ripoff? Lawyers..

Good addition to the rip off list, I agree.

Cigarettes are our choice, they are not a rip off. If it is correct, which it has been proven to have lots towards cancer & lung problems. There is a lot of money put into research on these problems & diseases.

Its not my choice needing to cut the hair on my face, its society. We must look smart for work.I do not see why I should cut my face by using cheap razors just to look polically correct. Razors are a rip off.

They should be governmentally subsidized :1orglaugh

rowan 06-11-2010 04:23 AM

My Canon printer uses separate ink tanks, you can see exactly how much ink is remaining, and there's no electronic connection so at least there's no chip to stuff you around. Still very expensive though...

I wonder about expiry dates, does ink really go off or is it just FUD to stop people stockpiling it?

Exactly the same problem here - and you're lucky if they even fix what they should fix and not wreck your car, a friend of mine caught mechanics ripping his car off the good parts and exchanging those with used shitty parts...

I'm also looking to change to a double edge razor to save money. Getting that bactine would only increase my costs.

With the change I would also save quite a bit on shaving cream/gel. I've read that some of those natural shaving soaps made to be used with a brush can last up to a year. And they actually make your skin healthier and younger looking.

Emil 06-11-2010 04:49 AM

I hate the ink-prices, it's such a ripoff.

I dont know about razor prices because I've been using my electric hair clippers to get my beard of for the last 8 years. :1orglaugh
It's faster, cheaper and it doesn't give me a babyface.

quantum-x 06-11-2010 04:52 AM

Razors I've not had a problem with.. I use the cheapest, nastiest disposable razors, and use them until I'm essentially plucking my face. Never seemed to have bothered me.

Printers: Get a laser printer, or even better, don't print shit out. I've lived without a printer for ~5 years now - if I really, really need something printed, pop down to the print shop.

Biggest ripoff in France is postal: they have some deal stitched up w/ Fedex, so to send *anything* (ie, one sheet of paper) express, the base price is 75USD. Cunts.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people need to print shit out for their bookkeeping.

You are doing it wrong. Never shave against the hair. Shave down the hair.

I know that going against the hair gives a very smooth shave, but you'll get ingrown hairs that will get inflammated.

Possibly. I've been running the books for my program for the last few years in a paperless means. I'm lucky I can get away with it, I guess :)

i hate razor blade purchasing

raymor 06-11-2010 10:27 AM

Gas and cigarettes would be cheap if it weren't for the taxes.
Obama really pissed me off talking about trying to reduce energy prices the
same week he raised the tax on gas!

Printer ink - the refill store, for sure.

They'll try to sell you an HDMI cable for $100+ when you can get a $4 cable that does exactly the same job.

Heck yeah. I recently bought up a bunch of gold plated high quality cables,
including Monster brand, for $1.09 each at the dollar store. Otherwise, eBay
for cables.

Name brand computing equipment generally is a lot like the cables.
Just as Best Buy will charge you $28 for a USB cable you can get on eBay for $2,
this morning I was looking at the same thing with servers. Some of the corporate guys
who run big backup systems were comparing specs on $40,000 and $50,000
back up systems. The primary control box we use for the Clonebox has
similar performance for about $3,000. Clonebox has better features too!
It's just that we don't use a $28 cable on each drive, we buy the same cable
made in the same factory ten for $20.

They spend $5,000 on a KVM for remote administration. That let's them use
their local keyboard and monitor just like they were sitting right at the
computer, even working with the BIOS if need be. We spent $150 on a KVM
for remote administration, which let's us use our local keyboard and monitor
just like we were sitting right at the computer, even working with the BIOS if
need be. The only difference? Their $5,000 KVM has a neat GUI displaying
all of the different machines that they are NOT working at at the moment.
Ours just has a simple web interface. The actual KVM chip, the part that does the hard work, is the exact same chip.

They do get good service if something breaks. For $50,000, I can get TWO
spare servers just in case something breaks, AND stick $41,000 in my pocket.
