what he's saying is that there's 45minutes per half, so you can only have an ad break before it starts at half time and at the end, so 3 ad breaks in 90+ minutes.

i see now, it's a tv conspiracy! i wouldn't doubt that but according to the article, euro&uk tele just lumps more ads into one chunk instead of spacing them out between several breaks so it's the same amount of advertising.

either way,

thx for the clarification. :thumbsup

well according to your link:

US: a typical 30-minute block of time now includes 22 minutes of programming with six minutes of national advertising and two minutes of local. Some networks even use a 18 minutes of show/12 minutes of commercial split.

so between 16minutes and 24minutes of ad breaks per hour

UK: the amount of airtime allowed by the UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom for advertising is an overall average of 7 minutes per hour, with limits of 12 minutes for any particular clock hour (8 minutes per hour between 6pm and 11pm).

7 minutes per hour, or no adverts on the bbc

quite a difference

If the USA Football team rises to the top 5 nations in the world then Americans will start to love it. Until then it will be a minor sport in the US.

It's called Football not soccer. American Football has little to do with feet except for kicking the extra point, standing and running on. :1orglaugh

Baseball is practiced in all Central America and many parts of Asia. USA is not the best in neither basketball nor baseball.

If you think about it, all sports are gay. Most sports are wealthy well hung men in tight uniforms with other men in tight uniforms chasing around balls and then showering together.

that's ~20%, not far off from ~30%.

Europe

In many European countries television advertisements appear in longer, but less frequent advertising breaks. For example, instead of 3 minutes every 8 minutes, there might be around 6 minutes every half hour. European Union legislation limits the time taken by commercial breaks to 12 minutes per hour (20%), with a minimum segment length of 20 or 30 minutes, depending on the programme content.

my point remains re: soccer. i doubt it's a conspiracy by the networks and these #s belie that.

However, we control the times for our football/baseball/basketball/etc.. and we Americans like control.

The US doesnt give a shit about it for many reasons. Its boring as shit and does not translate well to TV, scoreless ties and the players are the biggest pussies in the world. These guys go down like they have been shot and roll around on the ground in pain nearly everytime they get their feet tangled up or get touched. Even Paul Pierce yells at them to get the fuck up and stop acting.

They dont put any add breaks when the game is playing in any of the main playing countries.

So that is 45 minutes each way without adds, with a few adds in the break in the middle, when everyone goes to the toilet or grabs a beer, or does whatever but dont watch the adds

Thats why US TV stations dont push it. You cant have adverts running while the game is playing and there is no natural breaks to put adds.

It simply makes revenues from adverts lower. So they dont push soccer.

I couldn't agree more. The most watched game in the world, and they name it wrong, diss it at every opportunity, then say it's boring when the scores are only 2-0 instead of 1541234-35134 after 11 hours of stop start "action". :1orglaugh American sports suck donkey nuts.

With tv viewing being much higher than attendance any sports popularity is going to be partly down to what the tv companies want to show as they know which things they can show well in a way they can make money out of.

by then all the teams will have settled down, england allways start slow, we drew the first game when we won the world cup in 1966 and we drew the first game when we got to the semi finals. i'm notr saying england will win the whole thing but we'll win the group and should get to the quarter or semi finals (where we will go out on penalties as usual), then you just need a bit of luck.

In the US the best athletes go to the sports that pay them more, football, baseball, basketball and hockey. As soccer starts paying more the US will field better teams. It's already happening.

nevertheless, pointing out the math is tangential to my post, which was ads are shown at the break so it really doesn't have anything to do with why america does not like footsie.
