We'll probably see a few more attacks of this nature. It might be a good idea to stay away from hosts that allow perceived content theft sites.

Most of my stuff is coming back online... 6 servers from RCN. Mainstream though, not much content... just a lot of transactional databases.

Did you call them? What did you do to have them working on your case?

I made contact to them by icq yesterday and got contract and stuff. They want payment right away.

yeah, I did the same last evening. But now, no news from the support techs, they don't answer. I just wait and maybe everyone is passing in front of me?

Way3 10-19-2010 11:15 AM

This is a very unfortunate situation for all a lot of people and hope that all works out! If you a RCN customer and need any assistance with migration, to Way3 or to another host, please let us know. We'll be glad to assist!
Wishing everyone the best!

TidalWave 10-19-2010 11:22 AM

ISprime told you guys NOT to ICQ anyone.
To call the sales department and get your account setup and send them payment.

Maybe show us where you saw anything about RCN and Isprime being partner companies in any way...RCN is a reseller, check your facts.

i thought they knew who was behind it. whole thing smells like bullshit.

stocktrader23 10-19-2010 12:07 PM

I called ISPrime years ago, they were assholes then and it sounds like they are assholes now.

As for hounding people that just lost hosting to pay a bill in order to get help. :(

You couldn't at least honor the remainder of contracts? Sounds like you are taking advantage of this situation in the worst ways possible.

That's a lot of bullshit. There isn't any way they could have gotten the fbi's assistance that quickly. Additionally, the fbi's sysadmins are not that intelligent. They have little to no understanding of anything further than issuing a subpoena to get information about a subscriber who was bound to an ip address at a specific time. Usually, they send subpoenas months after the incident, long after any real ISP is going to hold log data identifying subscribers. Additionally, you can bet that the attacker was using somene else's compromised box to take exploit this vulnerability.

You should probably consider colocation if you actually have that many boxes.

:\ If anybody is going to pull through on customer loyalty alone despite this, RCN would be it.

I can have you set up on a virtual account in a matter of minutes. And we don't have an "after hours."

I was curious about your service quality but it seems like your servers are really slow. It took me 25 seconds just to make 1024 requests! That's way too slow baddog! is this typical of your offerings?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but baddog is just a reseller.

blablabla 10-19-2010 12:56 PM

After reading about Isprime and their backlog in setting up servers, I decided to go with Webair. After few hours I already had dialogue with their tech on setup of server. Now, just awaiting the backup from rcn.

demon666777 10-19-2010 01:19 PM

I dont know what is going on with them now - but since RCN ignore me I think to try rebuild my server from my HDD on some other hosting company and ask RCN to credit my card for what they charge me for backup - because since 4 days they can't provide me backup, now they dont answer my question and the server is still down

I know shit happens but the worst in such case what can do hosting (or other company ) is no answer's and ignoring customers

SGx 10-19-2010 01:35 PM

hey demon, my case is exactly the same, i have been paying for backups since 2005
i just can't imagine the thousands of dollars spent into backups for nothing :(
and yet, i m waiting for answers and nothing is coming

I also sent in the email and then followed up by phone and ICQ. They said they received my email but I still haven't heard anything. Hopefully soon. Time is money and I don't even want to think about how much this is costing me.

My sites are online again, but the databases are still missing... The date I see on my site now is 09/09/10 which means that the last backup was made more than 1 month ago, but I´ve been paying for monthly backups, so would think that the last one should have been made by the end of september/beginning of october which apperantly isn't the case :(

Very true and is why many companies will purchase / lease boxes and opt for colo instead so they're in control.

Big drawback of colo is that when things go wrong, the techs at the colo are limited in what they can do due to the nature of the service - often won't do much more than power-cycling.

Customer is responsible for the hardware, software config, backups, etc. For the colo to do most anything requires explicit instructions, or a service contract (often with an outside contractor with rapid access to the colo), or the customer visiting there (often not practical); colos are thinly staffed with the bare essentials for running the facility.

Some dedicated hosts allow customers to change the root password / restrict remote logins even from their own staff, but strongly discourage it (some even outright forbid it), because doing so basically defeats the purpose of dedicated managed hosting - many problems that could be caught / fixed quickly can't be if the staff can't remotely login to the box.
