I don't exactly follow the SA rap scene but I imagine Parow is serious. Either way, they ware making fun of this kind of stuff but they do it so marvelously subtly that hardly anyone gets it. Look into their history, they are students of the arts and are trolling everyone. They aren't some poor African kids raging against the machine.
Jack Parow has collaborated with Die Antwoord and has a similar message. They are using humor and satire to highlight issues of race, identity, language, and politics in South Africa.
They are also just having fun expressing themselves in ways that were never allowed when they were growing up. Afrikaans culture was very conservative under the Apartheid government and artists were censored for expressing view points that challenged the establishment.
Censorship still happens social level in South Africa and Die Antwoord are saying a big fuck you to people who wouldn't want white, art students to rap with coloured Afrikaans speaking South Africans.
It is very subtle in a way they'll take on a hugely complicated social issue in 30 seconds of a song. I'm surprised they have blown up internationally because the issues are uniquely South African, although the overall message and spirit is universal.
They are serious musicians and have been successful in the hip hop scene for years under different names. Check out Max Normal before Die Antwoord came along:
Die Antwoord totally rocked Toronto last weekend. The crowd loved them even if they didn't understand what they were saying. And Yolandi is a total hottie!

I think she is hot. I don't like the photograph with a joint in her mouth. I do like the photograph with the mouse between her boobs.

Actually... a lot of people.
I caught their show in LA and it was a lot of fun. Total spectacle, but a great time.
I love Yolandi but I agree that hair needs some work. Otherwise... :thumbsup
She looks like Freddie Mercury raised from the dead, then hit by a bus, then drug around Iran while his face was caught on the bus bumper.
