I agree that College could be overrated. I disagree that College is completely useless. Business College could teach you skills to help you start your own business with your own customers (you don't have to necessarily work for someone else).

who says i want to beat the elite?

you have 2 degrees and you do not even have regular reading comprehension.

ill ask you for the 5th time, what am i saying is wrong? i know it hurts to find out the truth. but it doesnt sting for to long.

let me guess you actually thought a degree made you better than those nobodies who work at mcdonalds. :1orglaugh

Hey metaman, these college kids own you and most make more money than you and have 4 years of College and partying under their wings while you have years of designing porn galleries while never leaving your house.

Economists tend to agree that the US recession is either over or on the cusp.

Jobs are always a lagging economic indicator.

Most employers will be conservative and not start hiring until absolutely necessary. They will also continue to try to ride out the recessions productivity boost as long as possible. Employees will become wise once there are more jobs available and decide to abandon ship. This, of course, will force lagging companies to increase hiring.

At this point in time, if I were a working stiff, I'd be less concerned about job security and more concerned about stagnant wages for years to come.

These would be the mainstream economists that have been doing their best to try and improve consumer confidence with skewed statistics. We're in a depression, not a recession.

You're right, when it catches up, the unemployment rate will be higher than it has been in 2 years.

fact is you do care. and you will continue to care. you are so angry that someone "without a degree" could possibly have a different view than you.

keep tossing out the degrees you have, no one asked and their is something i can GUARANTEE no one cares about except yourself. Because if you didnt you wouldnt point out how "you are the exception" to my post.

whether you like it or not every time you learn something it is from someone else. living in general is a systematic process. if you want to live in la la land and pretend you are a true individual good for you man!

keep telling yourself you are free and not a pawn in someone elses game. i hope you sleep well at night. at least i like to laugh and play along.

if you arent a "slave" and do not use your degrees then what was the point? maybe because you were TOLD to get them.

reading you trying to refute the importance of secondary education is like listening to two 8 year olds quible about learning multiplication tables...

I indeed think it is important! Quote me where I said it was not.

The bottom is not even close. The bottom will be long and drawn out. It will happen slowly. Just in time for the "troops" to come back from war to help keep the social norm in place until a recovery can happen.

Im not even sure if a deflation period is possible with such a trade deficit that the USA has. How can you deflate prices and products you do not make?

and you can do is keep inflation on the rise while deflation happens at the same time. which will happen.

there has to be a resetting point. but the longer you drag it out the longer it takes to recover. but how can you not let it drag out with how many million gun owners in the usa?

i think you can't decide what your argument is. You change it to suit your purpose.

The funny thing is that you consider yourself a part of "society" thats judgements impact things. Those of us with college degrees know that your judgements lasting impacts only last as long as the bar tab you have going for the night.

Tonight its the educational entrapment of a generation. Tomorrow it will be the discourse of a two partied political system. We revel, in people such as yourselves. We walk among you listening to your theories and conspiracies.

it with great pleasure when I listen to people such as yourself. That I send my financial aid check payment in with complete satisfaction.....this is what it was for. To know that I am not them.

You prove my exact point. Your elitist mentality is going to end soon and you are going to be in for a huge wakeup call.

This may surprise you but not all people who do not go to college drink every night or collect aid cheques.

Isnt it funny to you that all those elitist type graduates that were to good are all of a sudden applying at wal mart? i dont find it funny but the irony is there.

Everything you have posted in this thread is "pedestrian" at the most.

You are somebody who is not content with their lot on the totem pole. Just because somebody is higher up than you on the ladder, does not mean by default they are looking down on you. But that is your take.

For every asshole ivy league fucker that looks down on somebody from his BMW ther is an equivalent person lower on the ladder looking up making full swath claims that everybody above is an elitist.

Be content where you are and quit basing your life on the haves and have nots of others.....then you will truely make progress with the potential and resources you have at your disposal.

In layman terms, you're a hater. Haters exist at all levels of the chain.

You don't hate college people, you just hate people who aren't where you are at. Thats worse than being an elitist....at least an elitist knows where he stands...they hate everybody equally....you...you're just unhappy..

Try go back on your post. it shows your exact lack of understanding if you automatically equate not having a degree with partying or collecting aid cheques.

why dont you answer that part instead of rambling on again?

those who have the need to compare their spot on the ladder to others' spot will never be happy in the first place. you are already on the longest road to no where. i hope when you figure out the end is not there you're not to far along it to turn back. :2 cents:

these "college graduates" (whoa, what an accomplishment) are pretty funny. Having a college degree definitely does not make you smarter by default. There are a lot of total drooling morons who have these pieces of paper.

I am not sure what field metaman is talking about but most require that piece of paper, no matter if the other applicant is ten times smarter, more qualified than the college graduate, it doesn't matter. they always look for that piece of paper.

If you want to be serious about learning and not just going to school to learn a trade, go to university. I am not sure if there is different wording in the states but here in ontario, most of the dumb kids go to college and the smart ones went to university.

It never hurts to learn something, no matter what it is. who cares what someones opinion is of it? If you think it will make you a better person go for it but yeah, i wouldn't buy into the idea that you are going to be guarenteed some kind of salary because you aren't. there are no promises in life.

You have nothing to add because you are taught in college to think like the peers around you. Which you are doing just like you have been trained to do.

So nice post also. :thumbsup

Metaman you are lumping all educated people with your college kid friends who assume they are getting big paychecks as soon as they get out of college. That is not an accurate depiction of what people expect out of their degrees/diplomas. I remember laughing at the fools who said this too, but it was because they were fools, not because they decided to further their education.

A college education is not useless, sure there are some programs that will be far more useless than others but you are forgetting that all the baby boomers are starting to retire now, and in a few years they will all be retired. Who is going to fill those rolls once that happens? Who would you hire for your business to manage a store or chain of stores even? A kid who thinks he's too smart to get an education? or someone with a business degree who not only knows how to run a business but to make it profitable as well?

I'm not saying there isn't exceptions, I am almost completely self educated myself, but it took me a long time to realize that knocking others for their educations is an act of jealousy, nothing more. If I lost everything and had to start over next week I would be forced to have to either take up a trade of some sort or I'll be digging ditches somewhere (which I have done and I recommend this to no one! Good money but your joints will never forgive you!) while people with a trade or degree will be getting the desk jobs.

As for being slaves, we all pay at least 30-50% of income taxes and are taxed on everything we own or buy whether we own a business or not--in that sense we all are slaves to our government ;)

* Most of those in NON-BOLD are pipe dreams, and are definitely not being done in American schools. The American school system is for churning out "factory workers" - not leaders.

So, a starter list. The purpose of school is to:

1. Become an informed citizen
2. Be able to read for pleasure
3. Be trained in the rudimentary skills necessary for employment

4. Do well on standardized tests
5. Homogenize society, at least a bit
6. Pasteurize out the dangerous ideas

7. Give kids something to do while parents work
8. Teach future citizens how to conform
9. Teach future consumers how to desire

10. Build a social fabric
11. Create leaders who help us compete on a world stage
12. Generate future scientists who will advance medicine and technology
13. Learn for the sake of learning
14. Help people become interesting and productive
15. Defang the proletariat
16. Establish a floor below which a typical person is unlikely to fall
17. Find and celebrate prodigies, geniuses and the gifted
18. Make sure kids learn to exercise, eat right and avoid common health problems
19. Teach future citizens to obey authority
20. Teach future employees to do the same

21. Increase appreciation for art and culture
22. Teach creativity and problem solving
23. Minimize public spelling mistakes
24. Increase emotional intelligence
25. Decrease crime by teaching civics and ethics
26. Increase understanding of a life well lived
27. Make sure the sports teams have enough players

$3k x ~45 years = $135k over your whole working life, last i checked a four year degree was almost the same... add in interest and you didnt get ahead at all. plus you lost four years of being a productive part of society.

Links to any of those studies?

I will answer your post but first answer me this:

WHEN DID YOU GO TO COLLEGE?

I am living in the TODAY. 5+ years ago yes it may have mattered. TODAY it does not mean shit. Times have changed.

The american and Canadian system of education is complete crap and students come out of school now dumber than a pole.

What do you think all those "get your assistance degree" commercials are for?

Paul Markham 10-27-2010 11:16 AM

For decades the West has been exporting jobs to the East. Technology, Engineering, Manufacturing, etc. Even here in CZ it's obvious to see the new factories and offices opening.

So what's left? Financial and look at how that crashed. But good luck upsetting them and they decide to move. Service industries, servicing who? Retail, sucking in more goods from China. Programming, India is only starting on getting this right. IBM and HP are moving jobs there as fast as they can.

When I left school in 1965 if you didn't get a job you were a real idiot or lazy. And I left with no qualifications but never had a day unemployed in my life. Todays kids have it a lot tougher. No fun to be 18 today. :(

No it is not. I am in my later 20s and I dont even bother to go out anymore. I see what is happening around me and hear. And the only solution i see is to work hard now before shit hits the fan.

Everyone in the west of in for a massive surprise. We all think we are to good for anything and walk through our lives with bullshit guarantees instead of working hard.

You have already seen in this thread people like "timlover" who go around and call people without degrees alcoholics or people applying for aid.

In fact id say the people NOT going to school these days are the smart ones. In 5 years there will be no jobs left.

I'm 33. I went to college when i was 21 and again briefly when I was 30. I'm not sure what you are getting at with that question though. Education hasn't changed all that much really. It's what people make out of it that has become a bit of a problem. Grads tend to feel a little more entitled these days, but the end result is the same. We all have to start somewhere and almost always it's not on top.

It's not up to our governments to educate us, it is up to ourselves, it always has been this way.

The Demon 10-27-2010 11:48 AM

With the current generation being the N.I.N.J.A generation, it's hard as hell to get a job, even with a grad school degree. However, the ones that bitch about degrees are those two stupid, lazy, inept, or antisocial to actually get out of the house and do something with life.

What i am getting at is times changed. People who come in and chime in their 2 cents do not go to college TODAY. The collapse just started being publisized. My point is times have changed. Too many people think it is the same when they went.

Education is "not what you make of it". Do you think poor people go to school so they can "what you make of it"? The point of college/university in north america is to breed people for jobs and careers NOT just general education.

Only rich kids go to college/university for the experience. Those are the same kids whining about salaries. Everyone else goes to build a career.

Please stop pretending.

Unless you are going to school to become a doctor, lawyer or some other professions that requires a degree, you are being scammed. There is absolutely no reason to get into 80k into debt to get a
"communications" degree.

If mommy and daddy are paying for it or you just want to go to party then so be it.

I would say 90 percent of people I know that make good money either dropped out of college or didn't go at all.

Meta Man you need to actually have a degree or formal education to have an opinion about school being a waste.

You sound like and angry pointless poster, with an opinion based on very little experience and a lack of formal education.

No man. You must be wrong, and the people you know are liars. Just like me I'm wrong and all the people i know are liars. Including the ones who got out college these past few years and went into totally different fields wishing they had 0 student loans.

I mean all the stats taken by the people who are paid to support to education system would never lie. These are government employees. It is not like the same system they collect stats for pays their salary.

I have read your posts and the way you talk about your wife/girlfriend makes me think you have 0 respect for people in the first place. You need to get respect for the mother of your child.

Dont come in here talking about stupidity when you brag about talking down to the woman who supposedly loved you enough to have a kid with you.

Times have changed how? This isn't the first time there has been economic problems and lack of jobs. It's not the first time that people have gotten out of college and didn't make money right away from it.

School is always what you make out of it... One student gets 100% on his philosophy test but doesn't understand the concepts and can't apply it to anything in his life. The other student only got 75% on the test but learns concepts and ideals that stick with them for the rest of their lives. Which student got more out of that one test?

Just an example but it holds true with anything you learn in school.

Dont come in here talking about stupidity when you brag about talking down to the woman who supposedly loved you enough to have a kid with you.

:2 cents: dont point fingers, i have read your posts, you are indeed stupid. and you have 0 idea how to treat women.

you think by degrading the women around you it makes you a man?

get a life. that to me is the ultimate stupid.

i went to school you idiot. i went to enough school to realize i was tired of being taught to be stupid. like you.

And then... something happened. I let go.
Lost in oblivion -- dark and silent
and complete. I found freedom.

Losing all hope was freedom.

Why do you think that people without a degree are automatically alcoholics or collect aid cheques?

i have answered all your questions but you just continue to rant about nothing.

You ask where this "road to no where is" It is NO WHERE.

Where is this metaphorical "ladder" you speak of. :1orglaugh

I dont want your "demise". I want to live long and work hard so I can sit on my ass and sell you shit you dont need. Thus giving me wealth. What don't you understand?

I'll reply again. Just exactly who do you think you are that you are somebody who can demand any kind of response from me? I'm better than you. I thought we already established that.

The difference between you and I is that I have the tools and resources available should I choose to exact change. The only thing you can do is just make soap box prophecy about the issue and complain about it.

We should change the title of your thread to: Somebody please pay attention to me

I think that would be more fitting.

Ok, I've heard your philosophy on life. Now please finish washing my window. The light has turned green. I have places to go...
