I was just looking at something similar the other day with my gf's class and some assignments. it is "new math" but its to get kids to think outside the box. most kids, and even people i know, only can recite things and have no clue how to get to the answer... this is helping them LEARN :thumbsup

looks right to me.

moeloubani 11-24-2010 01:34 AM

roll a die then cross out that many acorns from the ones below

then write in the blanks

seems straight forward

It's less of asking "what is 3 times 3" and more of asking "Why does three sets of 3 equal 12?".

The truth is our school district is fed up with this "new math" and currently ninety percent of the kids in our school district are failing it. The teachers don't understand it. So the teachers at this point are making the kids do the math, and passing them anyhow.

What's the point? Math is a waste. When was the last time you needed to long division at the supermarket? Better yet - If you had to do long division at the supermarket, what are the odds that you have the caculator on your cell phone handy?

are you trolling?

I made a ring tone of one of these and when I am at a party or something I switch it on. If a chick hears it I know she's a computer dork and I can talk my way into those drawers using webmaster game.

So much better than "old math" :1orglaugh

Not seen this particular example before but I have taught simple addition with 2 dice and a snakes and ladders board.

Jon Oso 11-24-2010 06:15 AM

There are definitely two meanings to that, but the most logical one is to subtract the number you roll from the number of acorns.

I now see why you people here and not brain surgeon or engineer

Just kill the fucking turkey and cook it for dinner!

DWB 11-24-2010 12:02 PM

Seeing this shit confirms that I made the right decision by being a deadbeat dad. My kids, where ever they are, are on their own. Adapt or die kiddo.

fusionx 11-24-2010 12:08 PM

This thread actually scares the fuck out of me. This is so simple!

DirtyDanza 11-24-2010 12:11 PM

thanks everyone...

Look I can do math with the rest of them.... I may not be an expert but I can hold my own....

I think along with everyone else this was worded wrong..... and I just know that if it can confuse me... (someone who has dealt with problem solving for years" think what it does to a child student ....

anyways we had fun doing it... I was able to ad some cool little drills to do with it on an extra sheet of paper...

again thanks everyone who helped... and to those who said it was so simple... great please be on here when I post the next confusing one

:)

PR_Glen 11-24-2010 12:11 PM

i tried to work it out in my head but ended up with a crayon in my nose... what next?

TurboAngel 11-24-2010 12:18 PM

So did he get an A or he'll have to wait and see?

PornMD 11-24-2010 12:25 PM

OMFG...yea I was a math major, but this was seriously that confusing to some of you?

Pop quiz - prove that if pizzas were flat 2-D objects, there are no 2 whole numbers x and y such that 2 x-inch pizzas = 1 y-inch pizza. :) j/k...I realize that math is neither a strong suit nor a necessity for some people. Just like some people can draw masterpieces and I'm usually relegated to stick figures.

beerptrol 11-24-2010 12:27 PM

Hire the asian kid in his class to do his math

not confusing once I figured out the right way to do it... but at first yes... I mean I know how to subtract 12 - anything

just was not sure the starting number of what we subtract from it was not clear in the instructions

fatfoo 11-24-2010 12:29 PM

I think the answer is humans should not be eaten by humans in cannibalism.
The half turkey half human creature looks interesting.

lazycash 11-24-2010 12:34 PM

Dirty Danza Jr. - cool name for a first grader.

I think the issue wasn't so much that the instructions weren't clear, it was that in everyday adult life, everyone does subtraction top to bottom, so with that you and some others were trying to apply that to the images thinking top row minus bottom row in each section.

classic gfy thread right here. bookmarked.

czarina 11-24-2010 01:44 PM

it's not ROLL A DICE
so no rolling the dice
simply substract 4 from 6 in case #1. 6-4=2

selena 11-24-2010 01:47 PM

This thread has given me plenty of laughs.

And not at the OP for posting it. Hell, I have to pay a tutor because I can't do the boy's Algebra 1 with him. I am past brain dead in math.

It's just the effort that has gone into figuring out 1st grade math, complete with screencaps. :)

Dice is plural of die and the first thing it says is "roll a die".

_Richard_ 11-24-2010 04:17 PM

I have a science degree and I couldn't figure it out at first either ... there is something about the wording of the instructions that is just confusing. As someone pointed out, it was probably something to do with the two separate rows and us wanting to automatically make that the two separate numbers.

And for the record I use math all the time since I've finished school, I use ratios frequently to figure things out. The person who posted that math is useless is really missing out on some useful tools in life.

beerptrol 11-24-2010 06:07 PM

get used to it, you'll get these kinds of assignments up to and through 5th grade. My gf is always bringing me her son's homework to help him cause she can't figure it out. lol

Dead 11-24-2010 06:37 PM

Even when you roll a die, there are 5 possible numbers showing, wonder what one you would use to subtract from the acorn total showing in the picture? One would assume it is the number on top of the die, but when would a 1st grader know that was the right one?? This problem is failed on many levels, hence there is no right solution, put 6's all the way down in the answer blank and dare that bitch to tell you you are wrong!

These days you might be right - for the simple fact that board games like Monopoly and Sorry that used to be family staples that parents would play with their kids are probably going the way of the dodo right now, so who knows if a 6 year old kid would have even seen a die before this assignment.
