Some of you are looking way too deep into this "new math" BS.

The most likely explanation here is that whoever created that page, was lazy and/or thought their vague directions were perfectly fine. They possibly even thought that more instructions would confuse a 1st-grader.

To use an analogy, it'd be like someone asking of a programmer a task with specifications that just say "make a form that sends an email" - leaving the entire thing up to interpretation.

Why do they have to roll a die? For the same reason the page is designed with acorns and a turkey - to make it more fun for kids to do, so it's not seen as boring and thusly hated by them.
