It is the same deal with smaller airports in the UK though. A couple times this year I have flown from places like London City airport or Liverpool (yes, honestly called the John Lennon airport) and they have been so much better just because of their smaller size.

Yeah, I run into that with ATL. There are times when I've thought about flying out of Chattanooga just to avoid the hell that is ATL. I still have to fly THROUGH ATL though. :disgust There are some decent Crown Rooms in ATL though - and some really horrid ones too.

Which airport in London has the tube like things where the gates are? Everything was so dirty there - bathrooms were just nasty. And no decent food.

I'm going to cast my vote for SFO. Friendly people, not overbearing security, decent enough food. SEA is my second favourite because it's small and friendly.

Worst:
PHX has the hands-down RUDEST security/TSA agents. They yell at you and roll their eyes and basically act like jaded jail wardens.
Dallas/Ft Worth is filthy. Sure, there are flotillas of cleaning ladies at every gate, but they don't actually do anything. There's garbage on the floor everywhere, the bathrooms are nasty, and the restaurant staff are rude. Add to that the mystery of replicating the stores every 100 feet instead of giving you something else to walk towards and you get a miserable layover experience.

again, no really on topic, but i just remembered (probably trying to forget lol) mexico city airport. what a fucking hole. ultra dirty and smelly.

If you're ever in the Anchorage Airport take a look at their list for what you have to have when flying to the North Slope. I don't have the picture handy but you have to have X amount of clothing, boots, no high heels, etc ;)

quiet 11-30-2010 02:02 PM

heh, i'm heading to Anchorage in March. snowboarding in Valdez, we'll probably have all that is required.

I love O'Hare, but it really is a terrible airport because it's laid out so friggin retarded.

Then you look at something like Denver, which is practically brand new. And it is laid out spectacular.

When I was a kid, I nearly died on the floor of O'Hare - no joke. So, I am always so clouded with my past experience when I go through it to really give the airport an honest chance to impress me.

I just did SFO and it was certainly much less of a pain in the ass to get out of it than is the case with PHL or any of the other domestic airports I have used in recent times. It took me such little time to get from the plane to having my bag in my hand that the person picking me up wasn't even near the airport.

That would be Heathrow...the new Terminal 5 is SO much better but you near enough have to be flying British Airways to use it. The food in that terminal is good and even has a Gordon Ramsay restaurant. The rest of the airport is still horrible.

I was just in denver for a layover flight, i was so impressed that i googled, and heres what i saw:

"By land size, at 53 square miles (140 km2), it is the largest international airport in the United States, and the third largest international airport in the world "

"DIA was voted Best Airport in North America by readers of Business Traveler Magazine five years in a row (2005–2009)"

xxweekxx 11-30-2010 09:21 PM

the airport was incredible.. while waiting for my flight, i used their USB chargers to charge up my phone, laptop, then they had these gaming booths where i played flight simulator, nba live, and a few other games... the airport is soooooooooo huge its ridiculous.. i thought to myself that this must be one of the biggest airports in the world. and i was right..

It is also super clean

potter 11-30-2010 09:41 PM

well there you go, Denver wins.

Sarah_Jayne 11-30-2010 09:44 PM

Okay, somebody have a show in Denver so that I have an excuse to go to their airport.

baddog 11-30-2010 10:11 PM

53 square miles does not sound like an airport I want have a connecting flight in.

It's that big because it's so new. They bought a TON of land far out from the city. So come thirty years from now - they have room to expand properly unlike the majority of the rest of airports in the country.

Ah, so it isn't an hour drive from the entrance to the terminal? I am used to 15 minutes door-to-door here.

Depending on security, 15 minutes is doable. I'm normally through the front door of the airport to my gate in about 30 minutes.

Pah, they do everything.

icymelon 12-01-2010 02:35 PM

a good airport leaves on time frequently. has short line for security and you dont need to take a shuttle to get a rental car and the food court doesn't close at 8pm. Most importantly you can get in and out quick. No long lines to pick up a passenger. I cant think of any that meet those all of those qualification.

Agreed!! :thumbsup Whether leaving or coming home, it's always a breeze to get through. Fast security, clean, fast baggage handling, free Wi-Fi. One of the few things Florida got right. Not a lot for restaurant choices, but the fact that it's so mellow makes it worthwhile. :winkwink:

Sarah_Jayne 12-01-2010 04:21 PM

I am loving that in the last year or so most airports I have been to in the States have started to offer free WiFi. When I was in Philly last Feb you still had to pay for it. This time it was free..good stuff and I wish the British airports would do it too.
