Nobu, at the Hard Rock, features great sushi and a very interesting menu of other Japanese cuisine. :thumbsup

We tried out Benihana's at the Hilton a couple weeks ago, it fun and decent food, and a pretty amazingly decorated restaurant, but not a much different experience than going to any other Benihana.

I avoid most strip sushi restaurants because they're so overpriced... The only trendy fushion places I've tried were Tao and Little Buddha, both which were great. I haven't had a bad sushi experience in Vegas yet though, every place has been pretty good.

Right on.. Most of the places in the hotels are way over priced...

I think its fair to say though that you are a Sushi Nazi...

What do you suggest?

2MuchMark 01-02-2011 01:35 PM

I forgot the name - I think its called "Buhda Bar" at the Palms. Great Sushi.

You crack me up sometimes...

Taste in food is subjective, however, there are several good food/restaurant review companies, such as Zagat, Frommer's, etc, and Nobu's is generally recognized as one of the best sushi / Japanese restaurant's in the entire U.S.

Not sure if you are familiar with the Michelin Guide, but they are considered one of the top food review organizations in the world. To earn a Michelin Star is quite an honor.

Only 15 restaurants in Las Vegas have ever earned a Michelin Star - Nobu is the only Japanese restaurant on that list.

The founder and head chef Masaharu Morimoto, is world-reknown as a chef. He has won several titles as The Iron Chef (you may have seen him on TV).

Here is Masa with Robert DeNiro (who co-own's a Nobu Restaurant in Manhattan, that I visited a few months ago - the food was excellent):

Anyway, since you think Nobu's sushi rates so poorly, perhaps you can tell us of a better sushi restaurant in Vegas.

I am aware of their rep, and I have eaten there on a couple of occasions, but their sushi was blah, IMHO. As far as better sushi in Vegas, I can't say. As was stated above, they are trendy and overpriced.

To be honest, I am not sure that I have ever had what I would consider "great" sushi in Vegas, but I am usually there with goodgirl and she doesn't do sushi, so I haven't actively sought it out.

I like Todai in the Desert Passage, Planet Hollywood. It is a great Japanese buffet and not expensive.

ShellyCrash 01-02-2011 02:02 PM

I haven't eat there in a while but Cafe Wasabi on Sahara is perfect. They have terriyaki dishes for those who aren't down with raw fish and they make good mixed drinks, so if it's sill open it's a pretty good match for what you are looking for.

Nobu is over priced, but if you like more traditional sushi what they offer is good. I'm not a pureist when it comes to sushi- I'll eat the tempura fried, sauce covered rolls as much as anyone- but if you can appreciate a straight up piece of fish, Nobu does offer quality. You're still paying more for the Nobu name than you are for the food, but I wouldn't say it's crap.

Now if you want Sushi Buffet Makino off Decatur is the shizzle. If you live in Vegas check it out. Blows Toady's out of the water. :2 cents:

Rangermoore 01-02-2011 02:06 PM

Almost all the places mentioned above are on the strip or in a TOURIST hotel... They are ALL over priced and the sushi is not that great.. I eat sushi 2-3 times a week and have eaten at most all the places here in vegas.. for me it's Sin City or a place called Spicy Tuna in Henderson.

Nobu has a rep among locals as being shit.. unless you want to throw money away.. just my 2 cents..

Sen of Japan on Durango / Desert Inn. Best sushi I've had in Vegas since moving here.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/sen-of-japan-las-vegas 4.5 out of 5 stars (88 reviews)

Too many Sushi places in Vegas to really say what is "best" but Makino? Seriously? LOL

However, this thread is not just about Sushi places, it's also about Teppanyaki and there are not may of those in Las Vegas.

http://www.geishasteakhouse.co.kr

That's the place to go. I'm a fan of Benihana but Geisha is better, cheaper, and their Sushi was way better than I expected.

Most of the Sushi I've had in Vegas is mediocre at best.

I drive past that place almost daily and have never stopped there. Guess I'll need to give it a try.

Dude, read the whole thread :disgust. That post was made talking sushi buffet. Is Makino the best sushi place in town... no - but for an "all you can eat" sush bar Makino > Todai.

Redrob 01-02-2011 05:02 PM

Take it from a guy who lived in Japan, married into a Japanese family, and had a full-course, Japanese New Year's dinner yesterday.......Sushi on Tropicana is the bomb.:thumbsup

They specialize in exotic rolls, nigiri sushi, and a full Japanese menu for folks that don't do the fish thing. They have plenty of good cold beer, sake and plum wine too. It is about 2 miles east of the Strip on Tropicana.

All you can eat for about $30/person. Everybody that I have taken there returns for more.

If you can't make the Trop location, the also have Sushi on Rainbow.

Rangermoore 01-02-2011 06:28 PM

Makino is not the only place for "All you can eat" sushi in vegas.. Most all the sushi places have "All you can Eat".. Makino used to have two locations but one went out of business now there is just one on decator & flamingo.. Been there.. It's ok.. not great.. Todi is a joke...And I know the owner from the bay area when I lived there.. He has a few places in and around the SF bay area that are great called "Sushi to Todi for".. but the place here in vegas is shit IMO..

Sushi on Tropicana is good.. been there a few times..
Sushi fever is also good..

baddog 01-02-2011 07:18 PM

Do these all you can eat places make the rolls for you as you ask for them or are they buffets?

The places I go to make them fresh right in front of you.. I hate the "Buffet" style places like Makino.. Not fresh..

I don't like buffet style regular food, there is no way I could do that with sushi.

I prefer I love Sushi off of Eastern/Green Valley. Won several Best of awards and is always packed.

Might be a little far away for what you're looking for though. Good 15 minutes from the strip.

tical 01-02-2011 09:13 PM

Ahhh, just came back from Sen of Japan (DI & Durango). This thread made me want sushi for dinner. Andre Agassi was there too... 3rd time I've seen him there. They even have a roll named after him hah.

If you're in the area, definitely check this place out.
